Season 4 of You has just been released and I'm checking out episode 1 where I talk about cognitive dissonance, the dangerous defence mechanisms used in narcissists and psychopaths, absinthe and more! It was nice to talk about new stuff on You other than stalking and it follows on well from my other videos about stalking and fever dream.s

I've always found Joe's internal struggle one of the most interesting things about the character. There's a constant to-and-fro between his denial that something's wrong with him and his awareness that he needs help to change his behaviours. Even in the first season he continues seeing Dr Nicki as a therapist, despite finding evidence to convince himself that the relationship between Nicki and Beck is above board. It seems there's part of him that knows he can benefit from therapy, but his denial that something is wrong doesn't allow him to even consider finding a different therapist so he can start fresh as himself.

2:47 Thanks for explaining for all us non-Brits. ☺ I think he was paying for it with Love's money. Even though Love's mom cut her off, she was still loaded and Joe yoinked it all before he left. Hence, the gorgeous apartment* in the swanky part of town. Also, thank you for pointing out the lesser appreciated emotions. In the context of mental illness, feeling sad is something I genuinely miss when I'm depressed. I get the numb version of depression, so most emotions (except fear/anxiety) go out the window. Once, when I had a complete remission, I could finally feel sad, and crying felt like rain after a drought. I practically danced in it. It just felt so...normal. It deepened me and made me feel more real, if that makes sense. *But seriously...that apartment! That is a dream-come-true place to live. But what I wanna know - how did he get all those books?? He must've hit every bookstore in London to fill all those built-in, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves 😅

It was given to him by Malcolm, as explained in the show. I guess he’s paying him much less rent than it would otherwise be worth

@@hennersucks Ah. Thank you, I must've skipped over that part, lol. But after I wrote that, I realized, didn't the hitman make him give all of that money to him anyway, for his 'retirement'? So he really was back to an academic's salary. But now that Malcolm's dead, I guess it's free? Doesn't seem like anyone else was worried about an apartment given how rich Malcolm was. Orrrr the writers just didn't care 😅 All I know is that place is gorgeous. The swanky really know how to swank 😅

Absinthe shouldn’t have psychoactive side effects (beyond the usual for an alcoholic drink), the amount of wormwood used in absinthe as a flavoring shouldn’t be nearly enough. Plus thujone (the main constituent of wormwood that people are worried about) mostly doesn’t do that. You see some psychoactive effects in tansy poisoning (also from thujone), but nothing fun. Mostly consuming more than a very minimal amount (like is found in absinthe) is going to cause vomiting and diarrhea, a bit more can cause disorientation and seizures, and then you start getting a bit death-y. This information brought to you by a strange childhood interest in historical abortifacients.🤷‍♀️

I experienced delirium while suffering from viral pneumonia. It was so strange. It felt like I had this massive space inside my head, my awareness was "too big". When my dear old Mum asked me how I was feeling, apparently I answered "I'm not the world, but Siberia is really big". Straight to hospital with my delirious self! Edit: it's worth noting I had just finished reading Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons "Watchmen" - while delirious! I think I had large, cold land masses on my mind because of the climax set in Antarctica. Heck of an experience, but not one I'd care to repeat.

i think the "gaydar" thing is super interesting and also applies to neurodivergent people. A lot of times i can tell if someone is neurodivergent very quickly after meeting them. I also noticed that i'm more drawn to other neurodivergent people and i get along with them a lot better than neurotypical people. I think atleast for me its quite easy to recognize another autistic person by their mannerisms and the way they interact with others because ive spend my whole life with similar traits yknow. Great video!

Hello, i just watched the latest episode of the Simpsons (S34 Ep 12) and i enjoyed their take on the life of KZfaqrs and a toll it takes on the lives of those individuals. The withdrawal from social medias part was my favorite and I was hoping you could elaborate on it's accuracy.

great video! this season was so funny with the inaccuracies. he says he walks ‚across town‘ to work, which is actually a six and a half hour walk lol. i was wondering if you had seen the two therapy episodes from this show? there‘s one in season one called ‚everythingship‘ and one in season three called ‚so you married an axe murderer‘. would love to hear your thoughts :)

@@Braddicusfinch yea I thought that too, but it would still be a plot hole because those rich people will definitely want to know how he can live there on his salary. they all think he's poor and they all know where he lives. if it sticks out to audiences watching who know LDN, it'll definitely be sus to a bunch of rich snobs. that'll be a bad way of "blending in". Plus, the show never acknowledges how joe can afford anything, he just takes job he likes because of books but no mention of finances to go with that even though class status is such a big part of the show.
