Both Rhiannon's and Branwen's stories in the Mabinogi express some of the most tragic themes in Celtic myth. They are also very similar to later folktales from other traditions. In comparing all of these stories we find some very interesting ideas and beliefs common to many of them.

I've been catching up on your latest videos as I've lately not had much time to watch them, and I think all of the themes/interpretations mentioned are indeed present in the story/motif. In particular, I think the ambivalence toward nature and super-nature is quite important to folklore and mythology in general. Forces that are beyond our control, be they metaphysical and unverifiable or observable and provable, are difficult, perhaps impossible, for humans to fully come to grips with. The abundance you frequently talk about, which I think is a really good word for it, is something we'll inherently be grateful for and in awe of. But the dangers and the sense that we still have something which is above or beyond our complete understanding and control will also never be something everyone can be at ease with, and so that conflict will never entirely be resolved. Even the misogynist and patriarchal interpretation plays into this dynamic, I would argue, because the majority of men, no matter how powerful, desire women and also fear the ways that desire could be exploited. That fear is where a lot of patriarchal norms took root, I think.
