What is historical miniature wargaming? Where did this hobby start? Why are the people who play wargames so incredibly cool? And why do we think classic tabletop, miniature games are better than board games, card games, video games, or computer games? This quick introduction to the origins of wargaming answers all of those questions and sets the stage for what it is we do every week at Little Wars TV.

Recently, I started designing some of my own war games, assembling the parts, maps, boards, rules, etc from various games. After I get an idea and the parts, I then work out the rules and then play test, and tweak them. Its really interesting to write out the idea, and then play test, because so many things can happen that you don"t anticipate! Then its back to working out the details. It is in a way, a creative endeavor, and very cerebral. So, having no one to discuss the process with, I am so glad I found this video, as I really connected with it

Ah, Tractics. My very first game--and minatures: two mini-tanks PzKw III Ausf N and one PzKw III Ausf J--first played in Newsome Hall at Colorado State University in the winter of 1973.

Glad you found us, John. We do a ton of gaming in that scale (and using GHQ minis), but haven't actually played their rules. I have read them a few times and you're not the first to ask about this, so we will absolutely keep it in mind. So many games to play, so little time to play them all!

Those of us with no community can still play PanzerBlitz or France 1940 by Avalon Hill or Civil War General 2 by Sierra for computer. CWG2 is far and away the best and most realistic strategy wargame around despite coming out in 1996.

Just make mini squares for movement and remove playing on luck(- parts), then this games could be as playable as chess on turnaments, even more strategically richer. Also we should unify board and pieces.

I love your vlogs, well presented, and open minded, you did a vlog on women playing wargames, I do and have for a long time, sadly a lot of guys think still, the little lady doesnt know the difference from a Sherman tank and a panzer IV or a musket from a rifle, I go to wargame shows and well get treated like I know nothing, yet I solo wargame in> Napoleonic's, ACW and ww2 all in 15mm, here in the UK its about time started to encompass every one and not just old guys >>>sorry for the rant

It's all in how one chooses to look at it. Calling it a toy or a game indictes fun is the goal. Words like models and diorama indicate a serious excersize. Oddly, humans make the jump from serious to fun rather quickly when pretending anything, including detailed simulations of some of the worst imaginable things, such as war. (btw) painting figures sounds like fun at first, but it's a lot more like work, since enthusiasts hate playing with poor representations. Also, they don't tell you how lengthy games of this sort can lead to animosity at times, especially when rules descrepancies beingcome a part of that lengthy process... of fun.

We have a large plastic bin of styrofoam hills in various shapes and sizes. We stack smaller ones on top of larger ones to create more elevation, so the system is totally modular. Easy to set up, easy to take down, and very cheap to do!
