This is the product I use to sharpen all my knives and edged woodworking tools. I highly recommend it. I have been using this system exclusively for three years now. Here’s a link to the manufacturers website and instructions nextgen.sharpeningwheels.com/i...
A few things I meant to add in the video:
1) On the # of passes. One pass should be just moving the blade in one direction. "One pass on each side."
2) Notice I'm using safety glasses! Always wear them and perhaps a heavy apron as well just in case.
3) For knives that curve up at the end, you need to follow the curve. Get your elbow up to do so.
4) It's not necessary to have the same # of passes on the slotted wheel, that's just something I do on occasion. Be sure to check for any residual of the burr or wire edge, then make additional passes on the slotted wheel as necessary, making sure to keep the same angle on the bevel so as not to round it off.
5) Re-gritting instructions are on page 7 of the instructions. For the grit wheel, start with something like 36 grit to break down & remove all the old grit, glue & wax, down to bare paper. Then smooth & true the wheel with 60 grit before applying the glue. Elmer's Glue All multi purpose glue works well, do not use kid's school glue or carpenter's glue.

My dad was the original owner/ founder of the Razor Sharp Edgemaking System. I spent many many days making the product and packaging it. My dad taught me how to sharpen knives and scissors at 19 years old, so I could take care of his clients, while he was traveling and demoing/selling the systems. Still a fabulous system. Nice to see people using it and loving the results!

I use this same exact system to sharpen my knives and it will sharpen the absolute snot out of a blade, I highly recommend it!!!! I’ve had my set fir about eight years and it hasn’t worn down much. As for re-gritting the sharpening wheel Irecommend using Elmers wood workers glue with a very thin coat just to cover the entire sharpening wheel. The wood glue seems to hold the grit a lot better than the white school glue that is recommended. The only thing I don’t put on the wheels is my handmade Japanese kitchen knives and I sharpen those on Japanese wet stones everything else gets a few swipes across each wheel and then I could shave the hair off a rat without waking it up.

I respect what your saying but why a 180 grit? Spinning at over 3,000 rpm is not very forgiving. Why not 600, or 800 grit?
@randomguyfromtexas1185
@randomguyfromtexas1185 4 жыл бұрын
Ring A. Leaveo the grit that comes with it, which is the 180 grit, cuts very well and fast and with the wax that comes with it actually cuts like a 400-600 grit would and doesn’t heat up the blades. It is a very good sharpening product, one of the best I have ever used and I have used just about everything out there, and it takes seconds to literally 2-3 minutes max to sharpen and hone a knife. Honestly I’ve never seen a 600-800 grit oxide material for these types of wheels and never even paid much attention to what the grit actually was until now. I just know it works and works very very well so why fix it if it isn’t broken.

Hi Derek, I've owned this system for over 10 years now and found that my wheels became covered with wax over time. This went un-noticed for some time now to the point that sharpening my blades became sloppy more frustrating with each sharpening session. Thanks for your advice on cleaning up the wheels. Now my sharpening sessions are enjoyable and I have razor sharp blades again and in just a few passes. Thanks for your video!

Hey Bill, so glad that helped. I had the same issue for a bit and I spoke to the owner of the company who told me about making sure not to transfer the wax as much as possible. It's made a big difference for me too. It's great to hear you've been using the system for that long!

Question: I got this system and did 3 of my knives…a couple pocket knives and a Buck 119. After the 3rd sharpening almost all of the grit is gone. Should it come off this soon or am I doing something wrong? Great system…I love it.

Im using a hybrid method. I don't want to fiddle with regritting the gritted wheel, so I use a Trizac 220 grit 1x30 belt sander to raise the burr. I use the slack part of the belt, not the platen. Then finish with the white rouge on the slotted paper wheel on my bench grinder. Really fast and super sharp. Basically the same as you do. I'll never use a stone again (unless the power goes out!)

Nice, I've done that with a 400 grit belt. It does speed things up!
@randomguyfromtexas1185
@randomguyfromtexas1185 4 жыл бұрын
Just my two cents worth, re-gritting the wheel should take less than 5 minutes minus the drying time. I just happened to re-grit mine this evening and with sanding off the old remaining grit, applying the glue and grit dust and allowing it to dry before testing it in a old blade was less than two hours at the most. The hardest part is waiting for it to dry.

@derekmelton

It’s worked well for flat and hollow for me. The only Scandi grind I’ve tried it on is one of the inexpensive MoraKniv blades and it seemed to work fine for it too. Not to sound like a snake oil salesman, but I haven’t had any complaints with it so far. :)

I have the 8" wheels on a 6" WEN bench grinder, and want to know how you do a long bladed knife without running into the opposite side wheel? I can go straight across left to right when using the right side wheel, but when I need to go right to left on the same side wheel the knife handle runs into the left side wheel (going 3600 RPM's). Is it as simple as drawing the knife at a 45 degree angle from lower left up at 45 degrees to the upper right?? Please do a video using a long (10"-12" blade) so we can see how that's done. Thanks.
@ladyfarrier5949
@ladyfarrier5949 2 жыл бұрын
Keep the correct angle, but instead of working the blade side to side, lift it up, working it at an angle..... up to the right (or if left handed, up to the left). We've done all sorts of long swords, machetes etc over the years and it'll bring an edge to all of them, no matter the length. (Fyi, my dad was the original founder/owner of this system). Enjoy!

I just bought a set of wheels. Trying to figure out a way to build a jig, or guide so the blade will be at the same angle on both sides.

Check out Knife Grinders in Australia; they've got the system! Caveat: not cheap. But precise. And with respect to Derek, do not use it with the wheels spinning toward you! Reverse the grinder/buffer so they're spinning away from you, hold the blade towards the top. Much safer to have the edge and wheels away from you!
@ladyfarrier5949
@ladyfarrier5949 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidemigliaccio5646 I disagree! You want it spinning towards you. If you lose your grip for some reason and the knife is thrown, it'll be thrown down. If you reverse it, it'll be thrown up. PLUS, you would then have to use the system with the blades up instead of down (if reversed). Only use it down, for safety!

For some reason it still seems too fast. Don’t want to burn the temper off the blade. I think I might go with the slow speed grinder.
@rogsmith66
@rogsmith66 4 жыл бұрын
Is there a need to cool the blade so the temper is not messed up?
@derekmelton
@derekmelton 4 жыл бұрын
The wax applied to the wheel generally keeps the temperatures below what would ruin a temper. It's important to keep the blade moving constantly across the wheel. If you stay in one spot though, you can ruin a temper.

The wax works very well to keep the temps down but when you’re using them down bare down on the blade. Allow the wheel to do the work by you applying a very light touch.

Went from butter knife to razor in a matter of seconds! :-) I've always heard a dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp one. Guess that to be true because I remember in childhood, Dennis giving a demonstration in Boy Scouts about the difference of Sharp vs Dull, he nearly chopped the side of his hand off with a dull axe because it didn't grab the wood correctly, it bounced off and into the side of his hand!! ~YiKeS!~ (needless to say...lesson learned!) QUESTION: What are the slots for in the one wheel? Thanks for the video review, always very well done! One proud Unc! Talk to you soon! P.S. We're all ok here in Raleigh N.C. Florence did some major damage in surrounding areas...No damage (so far) on the Farm! "Flo" gonna hang around a few more days and give us a lot of high winds & tons of rain!!! We're in good hands though, Dave has done a great job of keeping us all safe here! Power in Prayers!!!

I believe you that it works but why not use a finer grit like 600, or 800 grit?
@ladyfarrier5949
@ladyfarrier5949 2 жыл бұрын
The finer the grit, the less aggressive. Which is fine. But if you use a finer grit, you'll have more work and time to put in on knives and scissors that are messed up. If you have a good hand and eye and know what you're doing, you honestly won't take off that much metal.
