This is a quick and easy sewing project to help you use up your fabric scraps.
This video is an extended version of our most popular SHORTS video. However, we know a lot of people don’t like watching those super short videos so we thought we would create a longer version that has a bit more detail.

Excellent Petra 😊. It's good to be able to use up batting scraps. I used to wonder what on earth to do with them. Thank goodness for mug rugs lol.

I'm making a set of placemats from a kit. I think that I can use all of the leftovers of fabrics and batting. Thank you for the idea.

During the American Civil War, women would make, quilt, and bind quilt squares of a uniform size, at home. ( In their copious free time.) When they got together in their sewing circle, which made quilts, bandages, shirts for soldiers in the military hospitals, they would whip stich together finished quilt squares into quilts. Very few of these survive to this day, but if you Google "Sanitary Commission quilts," you may find the story of one quilt that made it back to the makers after the war. Nowadays people call those quilts potholder quilts, but I don't know when that name started being used.

The 5" size is more fitting as a coaster then a mug rug.

Is there a reason for sewing off the edge at the corners, instead of just lifting the presser foot with the needle down and turning the corner?
@alandacraft
@alandacraft 8 ай бұрын
The reason I do this, Sharon, is because I am going to clip the corners and this cross over of the stitches adds a little more strength to the corner.

When I make mug rugs, I use some layers of flannel scraps instead of batting, and also for the backing. That way if someone spills their mug, the back of the mug rug serves as an emergency desk towel. I would think old tee shirts and towels would also serve as batting. The rag bag is our friend for making, not only cleaning rags, but small battings, flannel baby wipes, wash cloths, and diapers. (Not to mention washable "personal cloths" in case of a toilet paper shortage.) I've trained my family to give me worn out clothes and linens. Natural fibers are used for stuff as described. Synthetics can be made into washable pet blankets and beds.
