It was a wise decision from the creators to cast an actual deaf actress to play the daughter's role. Millicent Simmonds, who played the deaf girl lost her hearing due to a medication overdose prior to turning one year old.

I found it kind of odd how confused they were about the old couple. I thought it was pretty obvious that the old lady had been killed by one of the creatures after accidentally making a noise, and that the old man was her husband who couldn't bear to live without her.
@ge2719
@ge2719 2 жыл бұрын
that doesn't make any sense though because the creature what, silently killed the old woman, then left, then came back because the old man made a noise? surely the monster kill and then eat. they don't just leave the person there. it seemed more like the man killed the woman because he's just stood there, and then killed himself by making a noise. what made no sense is why he wouldn't jus stfu for a minute while they left. anguish doesn't usually physically overwhelm someone to the point they cant stop them self making noise. it seemed intentional that he wanted to risk getting them killed too. the problem is its difficult to film the scene they wanted to film because it just wouldn't happen. the scene would have been completely different if it made sense in the logic of the film. it would have just been them walking along the path, seeing a monster eating a woman in the distance, so they stop, then maybe the old man shows up somewhere else in the distance and sees his wife is dead, and then makes a noise, and the main characters are nowhere near by for it to be a danger to them. Maybe they could have been near the town, be about to walk into the store not knowing theres other people inside looking for supplies, then as they get to the doorway a noise from inside means a monster starts running at them because they're in the door way, only the jump out of the way just in time for the monster to run through the doorway into the store. one monster kills the guys wife, the old man makes a louder noise and more monsters show up while they're still near the doorway. They needed to solve the problem of how exactly people being super careful and aware and walking slowly could just accidentally come across a dead body in front of their path and there not be a monster there already.

@ge2719 You said anguish doesn't usually physically overwhelm. I imagine you haven't experienced much anguish, then, or you're simply assuming everyone reacts to grief the same way you do. I've worked in hospice, and I've seen many people physically overwhelmed by grief. It can be an incredibly visceral, physical experience for a lot of people. Yeah, thats how corn (and any grain) works: if you get into a thing like a silo that contains grains, the individual grains will start to slide between each other due to the pressure, and because the grains are sliding the pressure builds more and more momentum driving the weight of the person down creating a positive feedback loop, it behaves like a fluid would, it effectively works as quick sand.

It seems like a draping net system (like cargo-net style) being built/installed would mitigate a lot of accidents. It can hang in the corn or lay over it in one fashion or another, and provide a means to 100% prevent someone from succumbing below the airline.

I liked the sequel. But it's not nearly as good as the original. The first one has much more of a story. It sets up the world amazingly, sets up really high stakes (killing off the boy early on), sets up the pregnancy beautifully which then adds an infinite amount of dread. All the set-ups and payoffs are masterfully done. The sequel does a few things really well, especially how it parallels two storylines with intercutting action beats. The Day 1 sequence is pretty cool too, particularly when the monsters show up. But the overall storyline is very episodic and doesn't feel like a complete story 😊 in and of itself

This film could have just been "cool concept, reasonably well executed, worth a watch", but there are 4 or 5 moments (as well as the continuous suspense and clever sound (or lack there of) design) that elevate it to being an absolutely superb film. The two screams in particular - when she's giving birth and we finally release all that built up tension, and John's self-sacrifice scream - are absolutely incredibly cinematic moments. Absolutely fantastic film, one of the best and strangest experiences I've had in a cinema.

There was a film from 2014 that's done entirely in sign language without subtitles called 'The Tribe' which is a Ukrainian crime film about a boarding school for deaf students which is basically a front for a criminal gang where the teenage boys are recruited as gang members who take part in various crimes and the teenage girls are turned into prostitutes. It's a bit of a bleak film but it's done in such a way that you can perfectly follow the story without knowing sign language and just by picking up on body language and facial expressions. Not sure it's one for a KZfaq reaction though...

A reaction to a 100 year old silent film - not to mention the oldest surviving vampire film - is an idea to consider. After that, try the movie "Shadow of the Vampire" from 2000. I saw the film (fortunately) in a press screening with only 13 critics at the cinema. I have never experienced such a quiet cinema. Every sound jerked us all out of our seats. When we saw that the woman was pregnant, we all looked at each other sadly. Very well executed film. Respect to all actors who had to portray all emotions and conflicts without language.

1:10 Regarding your question if there are silent films out there: "The Artist" from 2011 is a "classical" silent/black and white experience, which is paying hommage to the early days of Hollywood/-Stars. It was nominated for 10 Oscars that year, of which it won 5 (including best picture)

They also talked about movies with no music. "Dog Day Afternoon" from 1975 is not a silent film, but there is no background music at all. The opening credits have an Elton John song playing but it is actually on the radio of the car that the protagonists are driving. So, even though the song is playing, you can here the noises of the street and the birds flying, etc. I would really recommend it to any fans of Sidney Lumet's film "12 Angry men" (same director as Dog Day Afternoon) and also any Al Pacino fans.

Yes - The Artist! Both my adult children and I are into photography and this B&W film is a masterclass in composition, exposure, lighting, etc. I must admit, I struggled a bit at the beginning but soon adjusted to the strangeness of silence.

It's important to remember that the monsters' hearing is based on proximity, like any animal's, and the family has CCTV set up with their light based alarm system. The kids can walk quietly around the property with relative confidence that their minute sounds won't attract one of the 3 known creatures nearby. Some critics of this movie talk about it like sound sends a gps signal to all the monsters so even the family breathing would attract them from near and far, and that just doesn't seem to be the case.

A simiilar amount of suspense can be had when you're trying to have a dump and the other stalls are occupied 😓 😬 Edit: If you haven't seen it, the intro sequence of Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) is almost silent for a long time. It's a must-see for anybody!

The thing about this movie that secretly elevates it is something you guys touched on. They show you everything you need to know about what’s going on. They don’t tell you with some heavy handed exposition dump to spoon feed you the back-story. They make it pretty clear what’s happening, and that respect for the audience’s intelligence pays off big time. The danger is real, and nobody is safe from some contrived plot armors. But then you add in the real family story. Survivors guilt, and just the emotional weight of losing a family member so tragically. It checks literally all the boxes, and does it really well.

8:30 Simone is onto something. It would take tens of thousands of years at minimum but babies who make less noise would be more likely to survive and grow up to have their own babies to pass down those traits. Given enough time, tens of thousands of years at minimum, that trait would end up becoming dominant and given enough time it would become exclusive so yeah, eventually, if humans continued to survive in this scenario and those creatures continued to exist, human babies would barely make any noise.

I remember being annoyed by the fact that they kept framed pictures on a narrow wall, ready to be bumped into, in their house. All due to how intricate the rest of the movie was about sound, haha

Fun story, the scene where the father and the alien are racing each other towards the son is in the trailer, and everyone was all like 'How... how will they save the child? There is no way!' ... and then the scene happens and sets the tone for the whole film. 12/10, would love to see this genre subversion again and again.

The reason they didn't move to the waterfall was they were already set up at the farm with decent lines of sight and they knew where they could hide quickly. Plus moving to a waterfall would have been a loud thing to do as well as having your stuff constantly wet and the biggest nail in the coffin for that idea would be living with that noise all the time you'd never be able to hear something coming up on you.
