It's absurd to think that with all the mayhem going on that people would sparse out the fact that sound attracts these creatures. Most people are oblivious to what's going on around them, let alone tuned in enough to make quick desertions about the events around them.

How can Devindra not see the faults in this movie? It sets up a premise that it hardly, if at all, delivers on. As a long time listener to the podcast, it a little bit "sad" to hear how Devindra just goes on the have a different view to the point of almost defending it with basically child arguments, instead of trying to listen to the others. Chen seems the most reasonable, always trying to see the other points and sometimes even changing his opinion when new light comes to a topic, but Devindra just plainly does not want to change. This might be a bit of a rant, but I've been listening for years now and it's always the same jargon, which is getting old.

Devindra basically feigns complete ignorance as to the significance of the title and what it promises in an effort to defend it from any and all criticism. It was a strange take.’

Devindra got me to watch Evil, then I realized we have almost the same taste and takes. He is, as usual, correct again. Take that Chensky and 2 Ns and 1 T! 😂

Davindra always has to take a contrarian view. I agree it was a great movie but also agree with Jeff and David. It didn’t live up to the ‘Day One’ title although that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable in my view.

He's not taking a contrarian view. He's just a feminist praising the film because it stars a woman and her being a woman of color is the icing on the cake.

He also always unnecessarily delays getting into spoilers when Dave and Jeff are ready to. Are there really that many listeners who make that far into the pod without watching the movie?

I don't think he's being contrarian, although maybe that's just me being contrarian. I think he's reacting to Jeff's critique that this isn't as good as the movie he thought it was going to be or the movie that he would cast, but I personally think that whole line of critique is solipsistic and closes down discourse about what the film is actually about. And on its actual merits this film is a competently crafted, compelling story and deserves props for that. Hollywood keeps giving us what they think we want, isn't it ok to get something that's unexpected?

Jeff hit it on the nail, not sure how Devindra says it plays to it being in NY. We should see how the aliens respond to all the noise, shouldn't they be running in circles trying to react to all the noise. See how they deal with subways, concerts , sporting events, wall street , give us cheesy social media influencer moments that would make sense in NY. If they go into the 4th I hope they give us winter setting , perspective from NASA , social media... I hope they look to HBO last of us for inspiration on how you expand your story and events from the original premise. Yeah the logic of the aliens don't make sense... Unless we hand wave they have hive mind so they know when each other are making noise and ignore it. The aliens shouldn't be clomping around like horses ... That's right they should have been stealthy.

Her being a cancer patient is a HUGE spoiler, what is Devindra talking about? That detail changes everything for the character and is also left out of the trailers

Huge spoiler would be something you don't learn in literally the first 5 minutes of the movie though.

I disagree that the aliens are scary in this. Its already reached diminishing returns - all the shock value is gone and this new one is overly reliant on jump scares. The most egregious being the dream sequence.

I think Day One is that the invasion sequence sort of happens in parts. and cut the movie in half with her blacking out only to follow up with aliens suddenly attacking people in the street scene. How do they people show up and shuffle loudly making that second attack sequence with all the people walking around and not talking is just sooo convienient. If they knew they had to be quiet, why were they so noisy?

I couldn't take the first two movies seriously and I kinda laughed all through them, they were riddled with really dumb decisions after dumb decisions. Why not live near a loud area to blanket your sounds, like a fucking stream??? Why did the dad sacrifice himself, he could have tossed a rock to distract the monster? To me, the sacrifice was awful, he could have worked out many ways to get outta that situation easily. Instead, he sacrifices himself abandoning his family when they absolutely needed him to stay alive. The mom literally just had a baby, that woman needed help. The biggest thing I thought was dumb, was the opening where the sister gave the kid a battery for his toy. I'm sorry, but that was incredibly stupid on so many levels. Why bring your entire family on a round up, let alone a toddler. Your older kids are smart enough to understand the threat and I highly doubt they'd protest babysitting in that environment. It's not like babysitting is preventing them from going out with friends to a mall. I never really felt suspense because the rules were so clear, don't make a sound. So by that logic MAKE SOUNDS ALL THE TIME to cover your movement. And I fail to believe someone didn't think of this and lure them in with sounds and set off multiple bombs or even happen on the fact that the thing that attracts them also kills them. This series makes you suspend your belief as much as a Michael bay movie in order to enjoy it. Like, i love war of the worlds, but the big reveal at the end of the that the monsters can't handle water lands differently in a modern setting than it would in the victorian times the book originally take place in. It kinda loses it's edge since we're wondering why such an advanced species didn't clock for atmospheric stuff when planning an invasion. That seems like invasion 101, make sure you know your environment and it's dangers so you can adequately take it over without too much effort. Plus, the tech didn't seem as magical set in the 2000's, vs when they invaded in the early industrial revolution where most people didn't have access to light beyond candles and bumbling cars that barely went over 10km/hr. The contrast between alien and human was very pronounced and that gave the book victorian times more teeth since the average human would have limited knowledge and not as much access to useful tech than someone in the modern 2000's movies. The Victorian Aliens were more dangerous because they were smarter, leagues more advanced and their robots felt almost mythical because of how much more evolved they were over humans. It's the same principal as humans vs ants, it's almost a no contest with who will survive and that's why the ending of the book lands better because humans won against all odds. Where as... in 2000's we have tech like this and have a higher level of intelligence on average than someone from victorian times, so the playing field between the aliens and human is more level and therefore less scary. And I think this is why the quiet place movies fail to impress me, I can't buy that an alien with such specialized rules that are easy to understand would cripple humans who have access to modern tech/ modern sensibilities. For me, this would have played out better if they changed the time frame in the series to something like the 50's or ancient times so it'd be naturally harder to find out the rules to the aliens gimmick. Plus adding the element of how slow communication spread would make the invasion all that more scary because literally no one would hear or see it coming. In a quiet place's time setting, I'm sure there was some space nerd with a telescope pointing to the odd things coming at the planet for months in advance.

Did Devindra seriously call out the first film for being "dad wish fulfillment?" Par for the course, he would definitely sing a different tune if it was "mom wish fulfillment." Hardcore feminists man...🙄

Why do people get so offended when something is called a dad movie or dad-wish fulfillment. Do you get equally offended when people call something a chickflick or a “wine mom” movie?

@@darkduck3677 welcome. The other two guys are cool. But yes, this guy is that very annoying feminist who wants a woman “to do more” even though the story doesn’t call for it. He watches only female led stuff. And women can NEVER do wrong in his eyes. He was quick to defend Amber Heard and Olivia Wilde. Yes, maybe he is a woman considering he sounds like one.
