*SPOILERS* Having just gotten out of the movie, I’m going to disagree with your point on Joseph Quinn’s character. His parents being overseas is only a small part of it. During the scene in Sam’s apartment, he also mentions going to NYC for law school and says something along the lines of “It’s the one thing I was meant to do,” which implies that either he dedicated his whole life to it, or he comes from a family of lawyers. When it’s ripped away from him in seconds, he feels like he has nothing left to live for until stumbling upon Frodo by pure happenstance. I found his journey of finding reasons to keep going, even during the end of the world, really resonant.

I actually read that line, the "it's the one thing I was meant to do" line as meaning he's been a screw up his whole life, and this is the one and only thing he was supposed to do and now it's down the drain. I think either way, his character has a bit more depth and I enjoyed Quinn's performance.

He played a scientist in Wayward Pines season 2 where he looked after the cryo pods waking up every hundred years to check on things and watch humanity devolve into monsters. He did some serious acting there weeping and narrating his inner turmoil. Seriously good stuff. 🥺

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm surprised that Stuckmann, the number one fan of Alien, wants to know more about the purpose of these invading aliens. What did the alien want in the Alien movies? We assumed it was like a shark: It moves, it eats, and it reproduces. What is the motivation of a regular ant? I'm sure they have one, but we don't need to know it to understand the problem of them infesting your house. Threats in nature don't need a purpose. The drama comes from how this problem affects the characters beyond the primal instinct to stay alive.
@eyespy3001
@eyespy3001 3 күн бұрын
I mean, you kind of need to know what the ants in your house are going after in order to stop the infestation. Carpenter ants are eating your wood floors. Regular ants are going after the blueberry that fell behind your stove. If you don’t deal with those sources, you’re just going to keep getting ants.

For me, an alien in space wanting to kill you is easier to roll with than aliens invading earth (their intention is more interesting because it can be more than just killing). Having two previous movies creating the mystery surrounding the creatures and their invasion also creates an expectation of a reveal of at least something when this movie takes place at the beginning. It being a third movie of a franchise also adds to the expectation. I still enjoyed it, but I couldn't help wanting to know more.

@@cokemachine62590 Sure. Agreed. However, if you make a _series_ of movies set in the same universe, in the same timeline, at some point, retreading the same plot is going to get REALLY boring. That’s why the Predator series hasn’t really produced anything good after the second movie.

Question for all: Did anyone else feel frustrated with the inconsistency of how sensitive the monsters were to sound? For example when the nurse manages to successfully turn of the generator with no monsters showing up, but then his shirt rips and it’s slashing time? Or in the final chase scene when Frodo is being carried down the pier by his butler, the creatures hear a can rattling over the sound of car alarms and glass and metal getting smashed and all of them turn and bolt towards them? I also noticed immediately that creatures seemingly don’t react at all to sounds caused by their own kind, which would be fine if it was explained but it is never addressed

Nothing wrong with wanting to know more about the creatures but the unknown is what makes it scary and unnerving. Knowing to much about them takes away the mystery of them. Look at the Aliens franchise, it was horrible when they gave us the backstory of Xenos. To me i like the “ if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mentality. This movie is a solid prequel that’s falls just a tad below the other ones. They played it safe and kept what works. I think it should be one more to where it’s still has the same tone but have it more action packed. In other words we get the last movie to be what Aliens was to Aliens. We get to see the military learn their weakness and fightback while still maintaining the horror elements…..like Aliens.

@@cubantoosh sounds like someone hasn’t been told that spreading negatively is a no no. It’s okay. Hurt people, hurt people. Educating oneself is very useful in these types of situations instead of leading with bias, assumptions and hurtful words. Encouraging a little more tends to help someone more than bringing down people that you don’t know. Read a book on how to love yourself instead of projecting your own self values of ignorance and stupidity onto other people that really don’t deserve it. I hope you are well and around people that love you because if you continue this routine and don’t see the beautiful parts of humanity. Most of them will flock away from you. 🫶🏽

The whole movie is filled with contradictions. Like manic and violent librarians the aliens try to make people be quiet, but they can do nothing about wind, waves, storms, rain, waterfalls, birds, dogs, cows, sheep, etc. Earth is very noisy, but it’s just people they resent? And how about their entry to Earth, roaring and smashing and crashing into the atmosphere. It’s a wonder they don’t all wear earmuffs.

Some time, replay the scene in Quite Place Part Two where the Abbot family enters the foundry. In the smokestack of said foundry is an alien chopping into pieces, and burning. This is a standard technique for driving off intelligent wild animals like baboons and monkeys. So, Cillian's character knows how to kill them, but only one at a time.

5:05 yes, the idea behind it is so good that in the right hands this could potentially become a never-ending franchise. imagine: you could make a TV series with episodes (or seasons) completely disconnected from each other but connected only by the alien invasion, in which each episode (or again, season) tells the story of different characters who face that situation. i'm thinking to a Black Mirror or American Horror Story kind of thing.

I would love to see the next part in the series A Quiet Place. I'd love to see the survivors including Emily Blunt's character fighting, kind of like edge of tomorrow but less military like and more like average citizens stepping up to take matters into their own hand. Like they developed some make shift weapons that do sound waves like the weapons against the hulk in that one movie.

They do enough characterisation with Eric (Joseph Quinn). From a couple of comments made by him you get he's put all his eggs in one basket, coming overseas to study to become a lawyer (because that's all he knows) and it clearly hasn't gone well for him, his family would probably be disappointed and when you think back to first seeing him, he was ready to give up...until he saw Frodo the cat. That's enough.

My only issue was that this movie didn't have anything specifically to do with A Quiet Place franchise. You could replace the creatures with any other kind of an aggressor and the story wouldn't change. You could put the characters in the setting of the Army of the dead and the movie stays the same.

6:30 Great review as always Chris. However, I'd argue that even tho the family dynamic is universally relatable, Joseph Quinn's character is super relatable too from the perspective of someone living alone, away from home, seeking opportunity in the US only to have it all stripped away.

This movie was hot garbage. It wasn't "day 1" as advertised, it was a bunch of scared people trying to be quiet for 2 hrs. Where's the explosive chaos of an alien invasion?? It was over in ten minutes. Idk if you guys have low standards or if you're doing mental gymnastics to try to convince yourself it was ok. Huge disappointment.

Someone commented about want to see a A Quiet Place III . I agree especially since the franchise has done such an excellent and worked so hard at establishing and making us care about the original characters. I actually cried in the first movie when the father was signing to his daughter that he did in fact love her moments before he sacrificed his life for his children. That first film took me by total surprise. I have felt so much for characters in a horror film possibly ever and I'm a fan of the genre. Most of the time the children are through away characters. The writers, actors, director drew such fully-developed characters, especially in the daughter, it add that much more dimension to the film. The filmmakers can't just drop that family's story without resolution. Chris, I agree. I would also like to know more the creatures. I'm excited to see what we learn about them in this film, but it's similar to the aliens in the Alien franchise. The first two films were excellent. The first perhaps a groundbreaking masterpiece. By the 2nd film I wanted to know where the aliens were from and what their ultimate goal was. They, as the monsters in this franchise, are clearly intelligent and not just mindless killing machines. They came to earth for a reason. I love your reviews Chris!
