Every cut on that album is fantastic. "Jesus of Suburbia" esp. This album and MCR's Black Parade, I play from start to finish. Every time. And usually both albums back to back. Esp on road trips, jamming. My first punk experience was in 79, at 17. But Green Day and MCR are my main go-tos in this vibe. All these years later.

This song is even more relevant today. Green Day used their performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on Sunday night to make the ABC special’s audience aware of their political views. During a performance of the group’s 2004 hit “American Idiot,” initially written during George W. Bush’s presidency about the Iraq war, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong changed the lyrics from, “I’m not part of a redneck agenda” to “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda.”

They formed in the late 80s, but they didnt hit radio until the 90s. Basket Case, When I Come Around, Welcome to Paradise, Nice Guys Finish Last, Redundant are all worth a listen. They pretty much made pop-punk music pretty popular. I'll give you a heads up that the whole American Idiot album is done in the style of a rock opera, but the radio hits from the album are solid in their own right.

I think the song I decided GreenDay is way more than I ever thought was when I heard Jesus of Suburbia for the first time. However, if you do another reaction to them I would honestly also love it if you did "Forever Now" since that is a song that I think is really underappreciated by them (because it was past their prime) and because of that there are very few reactions to it on KZfaq as well

i used to have a 45 minute commute to work and this album timed out perfect,so i've heard it many many times driving down the freeway. one song flows into the next so it really should be heard as a whole. the last song "whats her name" is one of my favorites. this past new years eve they played it on "new years rockin' eve" and changed the line "i'm not a part of the redneck agenda" to "i'm not a part of the MAGA agenda" which ruffled a lot of trumpers feathers lol

Guys you are old enough to know this, but that era of let's say 2002-2008 was a punk pop era with some rock in it but mainly pop stars. if you actually lived in 2004, and I believe you did, you must know other songs just like that. Averil Levin is a main one, and there were others. It's the outcome of the sarcastic nu metal era of late 90s, from Offspring to Limp Buiscuit and system of a down. I mean unless you did not live in that era.. also there were serious new metal bands like slipnot and others. But the Punk pop wave came out of songs like stacies mom, who let the dogs out and so on. It's the funny ironic sobriety of Grunge in early to mid 90s and of course a direct decendent of alternative rock. but really guys.. you ask about this song, this album WAS their hit singles and career. This song for them is like Whish you were here for Pink Floyd. Another such band was of course Blink 182. But really? I mean didn't you guys live in this time?

Great reaction guys, love how the song generated a lively discussion between you! I do like what little I know of Green Day, the Offspring and the like but as a Brit who grew up with the UK Punk explosion in the late 70's it has largely lost the 'shock' value of the Sex Pistols, the Damned, The Clash etc. The presentation is more slick and 'manafactured' especially the videos, however, as you said, the messages still bear repeating because the big issues don't seem to change all that much! Cheers

Great reaction! It's not just about the Iraq War, the song's inspiration mainly came from America's reaction after 9-11. GD talked in interviews about how the media kept trying to scare us with color coded danger alerts, with blue, green, orange, red. GD (and many of us at the time) thought that was ridiculous and purposely trying to create unneeded fear across the nation. I praise GD along with SOAD at being the only 2 I know of that had the courage to speak out, bc you didn't or couldn't speak out about dumb gov decisions after 9-11, same as couldn't speak out truths during the pandemic.

To add if it hasn't been said already Punk is a music genre, but it is also a whole style in itself. Both are unconventional, even anti-establishment, politically charged in some cases. The music was of course in some places but also even down to the fashion sense of colored hair and clothes made from whatever the person thought was acceptable to them not society. Not to get preachy here on this because that is "Punk" but to get a grasp of the music of Punk there are many bands, I would say: The Ramones, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, the Damned, The Dead Boys, The Talking Heads, Patti Smith, Television, Richard Hell...let's be fair I can go on but there's a lot of choices to go down a rabbit hole of punk but that's a start in itself.

The green paint running at the end of the video is symbolic with this flag doesn't run red it run like this country the color green as in cash. The whitewashed of flag is exactly what it means. If you're bothered by the lyrics and symbols you're probably the ones that they are referring to in the song. And that old adage of if it's popular it isn't punk is dead. The sea pistols, the Ramones and the clash are well known and popular and I dare anybody to say they weren't punk.

The whole song is about how overarching political actors are a bad thing that the war on terror stifles the political spectrum of the US. This album wasnt one of the most popular albums of the 2000s because it was “mainstream” it was popular because it was a major challenge to the GWOT administration and especially songs like Holiday, at the time, were much more “in your face” to the political actors of the time

Green Day have five Grammys to their name and were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in April 2015. The Californian trio has sold over 70 million records and has more than 10 billion cumulative audio/video streams❗ Not many bands/musicians achieve that. Green Day was and is great! 🤩 PS: Why do you have to complain about a band you don't like when you could just keep scrolling?

Sometimes we, as the USA, do some idiotic things. Are we supposed to expect all art to remain silent on things we disagree with? I love America and if I disagree with her, I have no problem letting her know.

Green Day and Rage For the Machine are probably the most pro-Machine bands ever. Such hypocrites. Even saw some concerts (fair is fair at festivals), got me some CDs. But Tjezus; stupid me I guess.
