A RAID NAS is NOT a backup strategy

Seems many using a NAS think they can just swap out hard drives as they fail, with no real risk. The perfect backup! Not true!

Thanks, Wayne. I only have a few TB of data and I rarely go back more than one year. I keep the last 3 years of photos on my Mac SSD backed up by TM. The archive is on a spinning disk which is powered off unless needed and contains all photos up to last year plus.a copy of that LR catalog. Two other spinning disk copies of the archive are present one off site. The LR catalog is backed up in TM , a separate SSD with 6 month copies going off site. I used to use raid 1, but disks constantly running are prone to failure with nail biting rebuild. I think Drobo is out of business. I have QNAP, but also the unit itself failed, although I was able to do some soldering and fix it. That is when I decided that raid was not appropriate for an amateur photographer.

appreciate the feedback. sounds like you you have some good redundancy as well as keeping critical stuff copied offsite.

@@cwaynefox But you saved me! I checked my raid one - containing multimedia-afterwards and both drives were in trouble. Managed to salvage my data.

RAID is part of a backup solution (as opposed to a strategy). The first part should be another hard drive in your desktop, maybe even 2 other hard drives. Then you can add in an external backup to move around as necessary. Then you can add RAID. I have two unraid servers that I use for this plus an old QNAP. Then consider cloud. Don't ever just use RAID alone. Nice video!

I guess it can be part of the solution, in the fact it’s one of the devices in your plan to store redundant copies on independent multiple devices. I guess to me the fact that it’s a RAID in that regard is sort of irrelevant, it’s just one of the devices you’re using as part of the overall strategy and solution. Whether that device is a hard drive, magnetic tape, or a RAID of some kind, it’s just one of the devices. both of my backup devices are multiple drives as a RAID 0, setup that way so I am only working with a single volume. Now if it’s a RAID 5, and you are counting on a drive swap to keep your data safe, well then it is part of your backup solution/strategy ... and that’s pretty risky.

Thanks for the vid. The smr/cmr info is most appreciated. I’m guessing you’re using Apple-Mac computer by some of your videos that I watched and do you leave it on 7-24? Or have to leave it on 7-24 for it to backup your files. Another great reason to print your favorite photos, even if you’re not going to hang ‘em all on the wall.

Yes. Mac is on 24/7 but sleeps when not being used. HomeKit wakes my hard drives up at 3am. My backup software wakes my mac up at 3:05, does its thing and unmounts the drives , which are powered down at 6am.

I’m using the Seagate Exos 10TB in one cabinet (mine only spin up 3 hours a day, not real stressful), and trying the Toshiba MG07ACA 12TB series in the other.
