Rainy day street photography is so much fun but so challenging and it can often take a bit of extra motivation to go out and shoot in bad weather. Hopefully this video will give you some ideas and make you want to head out with your camera for street photography the next time it rains.

🔴Thanks for watching! Do you like POV style videos like this? Not sure if I should keep making them or focus solely on educational content… 🤔
@vermis8344

I like it. I think this is educational too, in a way. Sort of teaching by example, getting some insight into when and how you see photo opportunities. Also how you interact with the public while shooting photos of them. (Actually I'm surprised most people seemed to ignore you. Maybe it's the way it is in a big tourist city like London.)

Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate that. Honestly most of the time people don’t notice me at all, a lot to do with body language and where I’m looking I think. Being in a big city definitely helps though

I like taking photos in the rain. The lighting is more gentle and adds to the mood of the photo. Reflections in puddles are my favourite. POV and educational videos are great. Enjoyed this video and the tips you shared. Thank you!

I do rainy day shooting but not shooting in the rain. Being an avid amateur, I buy my own stuff and damaging or even having to do a lot wiping and drying off of my equipment isn't a thought I relish. So I tend to shoot from protected entryways, inside looking out, or going in and out of the intermittent rains. I do enjoy it and it's makes for creative shooting ops and makes me have to be thoughtful and creative in my approaches

Yeah I hear you there! Same here to be fair, it can be tricky to keep your gear safe and it’s a good approach to get out of the rain and shoot from a busy vantage point and then head out between showers 👌🏻

POV’S work well when accompanied by insightful commentary, as yours do, Tim. Nice. Don’t recall black background for pics in prior posts, but it works well, IMO. Rainy venues offer opportunities, but also personal comfort challenges that, for me, can distract from catching special moments and compositions, not to belabor dealing with wet gear. So, I admire your ability to work through it all. Thanks for not doing the trite “puddle reflections” bit - kinda overdone on YT. Agree? Favs include 6 and 11 for creative framing. 2nd indoor fountain shot has fewer distracting elements. Same idea for second “look here” image - construction site comps like that are easy targets and have become classics, but still bring a smile. Cheers!

First of all thank you for this video. It is absolutely cool. You asked for the favorite photo. My favorite photo is number 11. I like this girl captured among all these umbrellas. Super cool. I like taking photos in the rain, because all the lights reflected on the streets, especially, when it's night or early morning. I love this mood when traffic lights are reflected by the streets. Thank you again for this video and i hope i have not ruined the english language. I am not a native speaker. Your videos motivates me to continue with streetphotography. Thank you for that.😊

One of my own struggle to do street photography is my tendency to wait until the scene is cleared up from people and i get a empty scenery. It takes a inner push to embrace the crowd and seize the moment.

I like the one of the kid with the umbrella handle in his collar, the one of the lady walking through the crowd of people with umbrellas, and the ones at the art gallery, cool! When you just entered the art gallery and I saw a lady leaning on the second floor balcony, I assumed you would use a vertical composition with the group sitting by the pond in the foreground, the statue in the middle, and the lady in the distance, haha. Nice work, Tim. Another perfect pov photography video!

Photographs of umbrellas reminds me of Saul Leiter. It seems if there was a red umbrella on the street he would capture it. When in NYC last it rained. I took portraits of people that were framed by their umbrella. Remembering Saul, I hung out on a corner with pedestrians waiting to cross the street. I took a few hundred images of the umbrellas from behind the pedestrians. Like shooting ducks in a pond. Rainy days are not my favorite. I live in Seattle. Rain is a common phenomenon here. Three things. There aren’t a lot of people downtown or anywhere in Seattle. Seattle is nothing like NYC. During the rain there are even less people on the street. There is a common aversion to using umbrellas in Seattle. Not a zero sum but an uncommon use of this instrument. I do love the reflections. Makes me want to go out at night. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

Yeah Saul Leiter loved an umbrella. I find it’s hard to take a good photograph of someone with an umbrella these days, but fun nonetheless. Shame there isn’t much foot traffic in Seattle during the rain!

Thanks again for another inspiring POV! From the frames inside the gallery I personally like #32 more than the second (#33) of the kid at the fountain because of the juxtaposition to the statue behind. This day's focal length seems to have been 35 mm APSC (50 mm FF), right? Although my favorite length in the streets is (currently) 18 mm (~28 mm FF), I tend to change it to longer lenses the darker and muddier the outside.
@timjamiesonphotos
@timjamiesonphotos 4 ай бұрын
Thanks mate! Appreciate that feedback. All photos on the 23mm f2 - that just lives on my camera now, I love the 35mm ff equivalent, though I really want to try the 18mm especially when I’m in a city, have been really enjoying getting closer these recently! 🙏🏻
@ofitography
@ofitography 4 ай бұрын
My pleasure. It was only about 4 months I owned the 35mm F2, because I've experienced colour fringing at the edges of light sources and the bokeh of smaller lights was more "spiky" than "starry", at least on my X-T5. Last week I have sold both F2s, the 23mm and the 35 mm, in exchange of a Voigtländer 35mm F1.2, which has to be focused manually and obviously needs some practice as my shots from yesterday clearly show. 🧐 For the time being I'll stick to the 18mm F1.4 on the wide side and wait if I'll feel the need of 23mm in the future. 🤔
