A very rare paste-over label from a virtually unknown 78rpm record company, circa 1924.

I have one "paste-over" label in my small collection (I collect mostly 50s and early 60s doo wop records). I bought it specifically because I couldn’t find anything quite like it online. It was a 1906 Columbia record entitled Why Don't They Play With Me by Byron Harlan. I paid $7.50 for it at an antique shop. The label appears to be painted on rather than being a paper label. The company is The Fairview Record, Chicago. Great video!

The white and red Fairview label? That's SCARCE! I have only encountered 3 of them, and only one of them is in my collection. The other two belong to different label collectors. That's a toughie!

@MarkAtnip Yep! That's the one! I've only ever seen one other one. Someone on Instagram had a post where he showed one he had. Mine still has the Columbia sticker on the back. It was just taped over with black tape. It also has a crack and a chip, but somehow it still plays.

Recently obtained a Manhattan Record one, pasting over a Columbia single-sider from 1903. The announcer immediately gives it away by listing "Columbia Record" on it. It's now the oldest thing in my Collection. Another thing interestingly you & other commenters didn't include is the small distinction that: sometimes, these labels were made legally with contract to the label they were pasting over. Only sometimes. As for Harlem, this COULD be the case. I think I found some info that hints at what this could be. On many advertisements for Okeh Records in NYC's "The Daily News" newspaper from January to October of 1925, in their listed sections labeled "Ask Your Nearest Dealer for These Records" which take up a third of their ads, more specifically under their Manhattan section, reads the address for "The Harlem Record Exchange" at 1995 Third Avenue. Sometimes listed as the "New Harlem Record Exchange". Considering Broadway was regularly associated with the NY area being originally part of Bridgeport Die & Machine Co of Connecticut, and then by 1925 being taken in by the New York Recording Laboratories, it's possible that this is the people responsible for it. They likely would've had direct access to--and probably regularly sold Broadway material. Considering they were General Phonograph Corporation affiliated, meaning they probably had to keep their reputation good, it would be hard to think that some folk in the record industry wouldn't be going there and would've seen these records there and word would not have spread. (Although this could be why that after October in the General Phonograph Corp ads). Possibly this Harlem Record Exchange contacting the NYRL for permission of a "limited time" deal. Which could be why it's only seen on this one record. Though of course theirs's always the ladder, that this was done in a shady way, but also for a limited time. I'm sure this will help everyone. This is why I love this hobby. Tell me if this channel allows links, and I'll link one of these advertisements in reply.

Hello. You made a typo on the address, it's 1905 Third Ave., not 1995.

Hello, fellow Nashvillian! (Even though I live outside Nash.) I currently work at NMAAM and have been compiling a list of the earliest black owned record labels for an APS article. This one has been on my research pile for a while. It might be connected to the Harlem record exchange/Harlem Phonograph and record exchange that was operating in Manhattan/Harlem around the same time. They were primarily an Okeh dealer, but I'm digging to see if they also dealt Black Swan(Suggesting black owned/influenced.) Sadly, that's one of the only things I've dug up possibly connected. I'm doing my own research. If I dig up anything, you'll be the first to know!

Greetings! PLEASE let us all know if you find out more info. That is more information than I have been able to find from anywhere else. (including from a LOT of collectors that are WAY out of my league).

I guess I was scarcely beat to the punch on that info then. Glad there's others out there devoted to getting this obscure info.

As I recall from reading the Incomplete 78 Guide some department stores liked their own "label" on the records they sold. M. Ward had their own label but they weren't pasted. I have a Hawaiian 78 that's an identical pressing on RCA and MW. It was actually pressed out by RCA with the MW label. I have a few paste-overs in my collection. Radiex pasted over Grey Gull. Probably done for marketing purposes. Same company.

A Radiex paste0over is really cool! That's the kind of thing I would be thrilled to find. It would also be interesting to know the full background on why they did a paste-over for another label from the same company. Of course, Grey Gull was weird in a lot of ways. : )

I wish I could help but I’m lucky to have the few Broadway labeled Broadway’s that I do.

Broadway is one of my favorite labels. There is such a diverse range of music found on the label, including some really rare Paramount masters.

Is it possible that it was created by someone who lived in Harlem and wanted locals to buy records that were being produced elsewhere? This seems like a local fix, but finding anyone who was alive is not likely (almost a hundert years later) and a family story about great grandpa's scrap for business turnaround needs a truth push on a massive social media scale.

Please do! There is information out there some where, but neither myself, nor any (that I know of) big name collectors have found it yet. Even if it is just an ad from a NYC newspaper or a reference from one of the hundreds of record company lawsuits during the era, there has to be something out there. Let us know if you find anything.

@MarkAtnip

Not generally. Last year I sold some at the Asheville Shellac Bash. It was fun and I had the chance to meet some great folks. Normally I just swap records with friends. This year I will probably be selling some to pay for gas on my record junking trips. : )
