A Real Fiesta ST Rival? The Peugeot 208 GTi by Peugeot Sport

The Ford Fiesta ST is undoubtedly the kind of the hot supermini segment, but is there anyone out there who can truly rival it? Well, the 208 GTI by Peugeot Sport may just have the ingredients for a good match - but can it really hold a candle to the sublime Ford?

I want to share my experience, in 2016 I bought the 208 GTi 30th in the same two tone paint that you mentioned here. Bought it as a daily driver. 2020 and still have it as my only car. And i can say it just reminds me why i love driving, every single day...i just love the way it sounds, the way it grips, you throw it on a corner and it just goes, and when you think it can't take more foot on the pedal it kind of tells you: just bring it on!! Haha and it just hangs on, it feels so light, the little steering wheel that invites you to do something fun, everything is so inmediate about it, i mean like his reactions to your commands...it's hard to write it down exactly but to me it just feels so alive and it puts a smile on my face even when im feeling down. Like i have a bond with it know lol. It's not perfect by any means, but that just adds to the charm for me. It has character. Maybe all of this sounds cheesy or hard to believe, maybe you will laugh or disagree but im really not exaggerating, just sharing my personal experience. Would i recommend it? Hell y e s!!

I have a 208gti prestige honestly an underrated car, especially for younger drivers I'm 21 and insurance is only £560. Its also got more power than the fiesta st and is a discreet little car that doesn't pull attention to itself it just looks like a Peugeot. I u understand the whole "uhgh its a Peugeot" and I thought the same until I test drove one. Fun, cheap and economical for a 208hp sub 6.5s to 60mph car would highly recommend.

I have to disagree with you, the 208 GTI when it first came out was a really, really good car and recognised as one of the best. Not just "alright" as you put it. You shouldn't put down the original 208 GTI, most of the professional magazines with professional drivers reviewing it thought it was up there with the best 👍

Me too, I had a JCW for a long time and it was harsh on the road. Brilliant to drive, just like the ST and the PeugeotSport. At some point you think, can't I have both? A zippy drive and ride but with a comfortable edge? The standard GTI THP is that, a fast car with a little refinement, firm without being uncomfortable. I'm probably going to get the wheels sprayed black and add a small red detail but apart from that my only gripe is a slightly indistinct gear change that has a clunky sound.

Peugeot have a weird habit of doing this. I own a 206 Gti 180, and it's the same as the 208 Peugeot Sport in that it's a complete overhaul of the Gti that is almost irrelvant. It's almost like the Gti comes out, people complain that it's not a great car, then they build a Gti version of the Gti and it's incredible, but because the original isn't spectacularly received, and they're released later in the cycle, they're forgotten about.

I owned a brand new 205 GTI (1.6) when they first came out. It was only the third one I’d ever seen. It had a dreadful fuel/ignition problem coming into roundabouts that was very frustrating and dangerous. Peugeot couldn’t fix it and I sold it and got a Golf GTI. About 7 years ago I bought a 2013 208 GTI. It’s probably about the best car I’ve owned- great handling, great acceleration in every gear, very comfortable and I got 42mpg over the last 6000 miles of driving. Unfortunately I got a rare autoimmune disease last Easter and I haven’t been able to drive since and I really miss driving it. It’s got 65k miles on it and now my daughter drives it at weekends to go to the gym. She really enjoys driving it.

Chris Baxter - Correction, the first release of the 205GTI was v.v.good, but then they ruined it by removing the brilliant oversteery rear end and precise front end feel. I owned two, one in 1984-87 and one around 1989-1993, and they were like totally different cars. I’ve never driven a FWD car anywhere near as good as the original 205GTI, even if it was relatively underpowered compared to modern hot hatches.

106Gti was a better car if people are honest with themselves, I owned the 205gti 1.9 130hp, 309Gti as well. The 205 is the better looking car as time goes on but that is it. The 106 handles easily as well and is more fun with it, it revs to the fuel cut which is only just past peak HP, it's safer by miles, the dash doesn't rattle and it is faster in a straight line. Of course my opinion goes against the legend of the 205Gti, but I'm telling you straight up, all day every day the 106Gti is the better car, prices are low, get one now and avoid paying mad dollars for a 205Gti as prices are in full blown nostalgia trip time. And don't forget, it will never idle well for long... you know it.

But nowadays everything changed and the market shined away from the small pocket rocket kind of car. The used car market is full of this kind of car and nobody is buying. The Prestige was the eventual replacement for the standard GTI, giving you heated front half-leather seats, sat nav and a panoramic roof with ambient lighting. It has the same power as the BPS. The 3-door XY was the next model down - not quite as fast, but more plush and offered some interesting paint colours - but this was replaced by the GT Line (I believe Peugeot dumped the 3-door variant in 2017). No GTI was 5-door.

I have a 208 1.2 turbo,6 speed auto box, the new style auto box, it has huge torque and a timing belt that never needs changed for 10 yrs. I fancy the 208 gti by PS, but worried about the emissions tests these days for the 1.6 turbo, and the 1.6 turbo chain can rattle i think. I always love the rubbery ford gearbox shift, but peugeot has a notchy, clunky feel the mechanism change , decisions.

My 208 gti is nearly 6 years old and I've had no problems at all with mine. No a great amount of time but some newish car are having issues before they get to that age. The main issue I have with the car is that every dickhead wannabe boy racer in their old vtr or whatever see the car and wanna test you. I don't know what it is about this car, it's just a magnet for idiots. Even when I'm driving steady with my girlfriend and her son in the car there'll always be someone get as close as possible before overtaking then cut me up. I've had other nippy cars faster than my current car and not had everyone drive like idiots around me.

A brilliant, but flawed car in my experience, chassis, brakes and diff are mega but the engine and gearbox are very meh. Somehow, they've taken the Mini JCW engine which sounded mega and was a peach of an engine and in the 208 BPS I drove made it sound like a vacuum cleaner and sucked all the character out of the engine. As good as the 208 BPS is, the mk7 ST is better in almost every way; and the latest mk8 ST Performance pack just spanks the pair of them.

Might not hurt to think a bit more globally, the Fiesta ST is very rare some countries. Certainly not a plague on the "world", I live in a capitol city and see a st180 once every 3-7 days. Might be a month between seeing a ST150. Ford dropped the Fiesta line here due to them being unpopular but promise we will get the mk8 ST by 2020, we will see.

The next Vauxhall/Opel Corsa coming out next year is very closely based (basically a re skinned version from the videos I’ve seen on you tube) the Peugeot 208 as Peugeot bought Vauxhall/Opel from GM last year. Peugeot has dropped all the vxr/opc models so it should be interesting to see what hot version of the corsa they bring out hopefully it will be made in Germany I’ve had Renault and Peugeot in the past and the build quality and reliability just isn’t so good as Vauxhall most of which are built at the German Opel factory I currently own a 2017 corsa e vxr with performance pack which has a drexler limited slip diff as part of this I’m surprised you haven’t road tested or mentioned these in your review thought I’ve seen your review of the vxr d corsa the e version is a very different car and much rarer than the Fiesta St

Frankly, I'm still doubtful of the 208's quality. Planned on buying one a few years back and decided not to because the 1.6 THP engine had SO MUCH problems and all the owners on forums were complaining about he build quality. Hoped into a standard 208 for a trip and I was disturbed about how the interior was built :steering wheel hiding the speedo, strange windows opening switches placement and so. To be checked that may be the problems have been solved like the timing chain. Then it would be a really great car to own.

@@jgreen8339 I think pug are doing brilliant things across the board. My only reservation was their engine choices. I almost got a 2018 3008 gt line. But at that time I wanted petrol, and iirc it was a 1.3 3 cylinder. It felt OK , probably the same unit that is in yours, but in such a big car I knew I'd grow to hate it. I got a 2018 Leon st fr 2 liter 7speed auto, which is nippy but drinks fuel. I've averaged 29mpg over it's life. I probably should of got the diesel auto 3008, but in the summer of 18 diesel price was moving away from petrol at an alarming rate, so I wanted a petrol.

@@StephenButlerOne Hi Stephen. Yes the 3008 does have the same engine as in mine but has 130bhp compared to my 110bhp. Does seem to be asking a lot from such a small engine. I'd be tempted with the 1.6 turbo petrol in that big car or even the 2.0 diesel. I'm not a big diesel fan these days though. The new Eat8 8 speed auto is even better than the 6 speed you tested. I bet your Seat is a really fun car with that setup. I've always wanted to try a DSG but have never had the chance. I don't think you made a mistake as such but 29mpg isn't greatbI admit. @@jgreen8339 I'll defo be looking at what Peugeot have on offer the next time I'm after a new motor. As a landlord I need something relatively big, otherwise I'd have a fiesta, 306 etc.. Sized car. I've always gone with estates for years, tho I did get a GTC for a while, great handling car, but a bit limited storage, even thought its not small inside or out, (I think biggest in class). Handled great bit the two door got old fast, so it was back to estates. Not an SUV fan, but the 3008 was one I'd of had. Super nice inside. And I know I'm gonna have to give up on estates as oems just arnt really making them as they arnt 'trendy'. Next time it el be an Octavia estate (huge and they do a sports one now) or a 3008. Thought that's at least 2 years off.
