I have a 2016 500e and it’s a blast to rip around town in but that’s about it. As a little city car it checks most the boxes for me and it was dirt cheap when I bought it used. I would love the née 500e for the extra features and range but honesty can’t see myself buying one new. At the end of the day it’s just a tool to get me around town and don’t need anything fancy.

I think it is right for their target market. Image the experience you are having between USA and Germany, and then imagine the same shrinkage again between Germany and Italy. Small roads in old towns with only room for 1 car, constantly winding and parking spaces are non-existent. When I drove my model 3 around Lake Como and took the small town roads, I could see why a car like the Fiat 500 would be perfect. When colleagues at work asked me, I said, fly down there, rent the smallest car if you are going to rent a car and that goes for a lot of places around Europe, the German small town roads seems like boulevards. :)

You do get regen in normal mode when you brake.
@Miata822
@Miata822 2 жыл бұрын
Zero regen on throttle lift is actually _more_ efficient than one-pedal assuming the brake blend is properly calibrated. Hypermilers love it. Regen on pedal lift constantly consumes small amounts of momentum when the car doesn't really need to be actively slowed. Regen, at the very best, only turns 30% of the lost momentum into stored energy. You paid Watts for every spec of momentum. Wasting momentum when you think you are coasting is the same as dragging your foot on the brake in an ICE car. The very most efficient a car can be is to be moving with no power moving through the drive unit. A well calibrated blended brake allows the driver to only apply regen when actually intending to slow down. Off throttle coast is absolutely the best mode to get the most range and efficiency out of a small battery, but you have to be paying attention. Life early and coast often.

with regen, you get back roughly the same amount of energy that you used to accelerate up to the same speed. Main thing with using it is that you don't use the physical brakes. So in actuality the regen mode IS more efficient. I've had this car for a while now and is what I can't conclude after about 9000km thusfar. range wise I can get anything between 200 and 400km. have managed 6.5mi/kWh from time to time
@MetalMike50
@MetalMike50 2 жыл бұрын
Is it though? There are always energy losses involved in putting kinetic energy from the moving car to high voltage electric energy in the battery. Coasting has no energy conversion involved. In a perfect world of course there wouldn't be a need to stop for traffic lights or other traffic.
@OhMyLaurens
@OhMyLaurens 2 жыл бұрын
@@MetalMike50 correct but coasting means that the period in which you slow down is WAY longer. If you are driving 70kph and get your foot off the acceleration pedal it's going to be a couple hundred meters until you are stopped. Most likely you'll get down to 55 and then have to apply the brakes. With regen this can be easily controlled, in some cars you'll have regen modes, but in this one by releasing the pedal more or less you can perfectly time your slowing down in a way that maximises regen and avoids holding up traffic for long stretches like it would with coasting at higher speeds. And with efficiency, yes you are correct there is a loss but it's minimal. When I accelerate up to let's say 50kph and the consumption average jumps up 2.6kwh, and then proceed to slow down back to 0 then it will go down 2.4 or 2.5kwh. Maybe 5% loss? max. It's all about how you use the car I suppose. though, as this is my first ever car, I haven't spent that much time in a petrol one, maybe 2-3k km Driving with regen is also WAY more fun and easy to use. Certainly at lower speeds, on the highway it doesn't make much of a difference as the regen is calibrated to act less harshly when driving on the motorway.

Hopefully we see something like the Cooper SE (32.6kWh) in the US upgrade to similar size battery pack as the 500e (42kWh). If the Mini can hit 200 miles of range with a larger battery pack and better efficiency gains elsewhere, I think I might look into it.

Coasting is more efficient on the highway, and regen is better in a city environment. Imagine yourself riding a bicycle with a power generator (like one of those old dynamo lights). Except this one behaves just like on an EV. Imagine this resistance turns on and slows you down anytime you aren't pedaling, forcing you to accelerate again... annoying isn't it? And that generator will never recuperate 100% of the energy you put into accelerating. Now imagine this system only turning on when you want to slow down, or come to a complete stop without pulling the brake levers... convenient isn't it?

We have a 2014 Fiat 500E here in the US. We bough ti used for like $7000 in 2018. I was really looking forward to this version coming to the US as it is a great car, but since it's not we are having to swap it with an ID.4 instead. We'd probably still be keeping the 500E if it had more range. Just needs about 30-40 more miles of range to be perfect for us, the 80 in the summer is fine but 60 in the winter was just not enough. 130-150 mi would be great. Nice commuter otherwise.

If you HAVE to break (i.e going down hill unsafely fast, or something forces you to stop) then having regen breaking is great.
