A Relaxing Afternoon with my Saltwater Nano Reef Tank | Blue Reef Tank
This week, I'm sharing one of the challenges that I have been facing lately with my Waterbox Cube 20. My ATO has been failing a few times and this has badly affected the water quality. So, I decided to do a shift with the placement of my mangroves and hopefully things will start to stabilise from here :)
Also, I'm sharing some updates on the corals and fish in this reef tank. Although some corals aren't doing great due to the fluctuating water conditions, others are still thriving and my fish crew are all happy :) It makes me so happy to watch this tank slowly mature and I hope you do too.

I had the same issue with an optical sensor - it was kalkwasser precipitating on the sensor (dosed via an ATO system).

I purchased a couple mangrove seed pods back in October. They are slow growers but it's OK. I plant to have them for many years to come.

My ATO was dumping more water into my tank too. My turbo snail was living in the return pump compartment and would crawl over the sensor. I finally managed to get the snail out and blocked the entry to the compartment. No issues since!

I have the same ATO. It works really good!. Only thing I noticed with my ATO beeping some mornings when nothing was bothering it. So I make sure the plug sits well in the socket of the power strip and since then it hasn't beeped anymore.🤞

Have same ato only problem I had was tubing started leaking at siphon break but fixed it. No protein skimmer less to worry about

Get some miracle mud and throw it into the back chambers then add the mangroves so they can root into the mud plus the mud is amazing for your tank.

Also had issues with my ato smart aqua when I was dosing kalkwasser from my ato. Found that the kalk affects the ato. Not sure if yours had any kalk build up on it. Just started cleaning it and didn’t have the issue

Great video today! they're always so relaxing. Also I just got a firefish about 5 days ago and he hasn't left his cave in haven't seen him eat but I put in some food ever day. Just wondering if this is normal or if anyone has experienced this before. Thanks for any help in advance!

Sometimes they can be quite shy especially if it is the only firefish in the tank. Try to turn off the pump and broadcast feed the tank and see if it comes out. Mine will usually come out of theur hole when they "smell" or see the food 😁

The ATO in my WB Cube 10 was doing the same thing and it ended up being that one of the Trochus snails was going on the overflow and blocking it. This was causing the return chamber to drop and trigger the ATO. I made a guard for the overflow and it hasn't happened since.

I’ve heard that misting the leaves of mangroves with rodi water makes them grow faster. How do you like the Kessil 360 x? I’ve been thinking of upgrading my light to one. Love your videos!

Yes, I do mist the leaves and the mangroves seem to be loving it. I think the Kessil A360X is a great light - Love the build and the colour spectrum! Definitely worth checking them out :)

i’m in brisbane, hard to find kalkwasser and red mangroves here :( I used seachem marine buffer in the top off water for chasing pH but it’s also raise my Alk, got some STN so I stopped using it last month

You should research ROX 0.8 carbon. BRS did an investigates and those carbon pellets are more for air quality purification. I used to use pellets but switched to the ROX and I did see an improvement. I still buy the pellets but I keep it bagged on top of my skimmer to prevent smell.

Does your ATO go on for a certain length of time? If so, some have knobs inside of them you can twist to either change the pump rate and/or the time. I’m planning to get an ATO soon and am going to splurge for the Tunze osmolater due to all the safeguards it has built in.

Not on the Auto aqua lite unfortunately. That feature is only available on Tunze. I would definitely go with Tunze if I were you 😅

What do you dose into your tank and what type of pump do you have?

If you put kalkwasser in your ATO container, it will clog up your pump and maybe that is the problem. I tried it in my ATO and messed up my pump so now I dose it every hour with a regular dosing pump. I have to check the line every so often to see if gets clogged. Some people dose it continuously with a 2 part doser.

Hi there, what are your thoughts on chillers given you are in Australia, a relatively warmer country. I live in Malaysia where it can get hot and humid at times. Do you just have an AC unit at all times? Thanks!

Hey mate, you're right - I try to keep the AC on whenever it gets hot which helps to keep the indoor temp constant. You may need to check how the water temperature of your tank fluctuates with the weather conditions and decide if a chiller is necessary. The more stable the water temp, the better! Hope this helps.

I don't think a skimmer is necessary for a small tank. Just a regular weekly water changes is all I do 😁

How many bio balls do you keep in your WB. I have removed some from my WB20 as my nitrates were exceedingly low, they were a bit too efficient.

I wanted a mangrove, but they don’t export very many nutrients and their roots will grow through silicone… so, not worth it in my opinion, especially in a nano tank where water changes will suffice.
