A Weekend in My Life | Making My Saltwater Reef Hobby More Enjoyable
Welcome to the first video of 2022! Hooe you all had a wonderful holiday :)
In this video, I'll be sharing an ordinary weekend in my life as a reef keeper in Australia to show you the little improvement that I made to make reefing easier for me.
I got myself a dosing pump! This was something I wanted to have for a long time and finally got the time to set it up properly with the right dosing containers:) I made my dosing solutions based on BRS Mixing Instructions - I will give some updates on how things go. So far, I am really happy with the results. I don't know how I feel about the colours of the airline tubing yet - Let me know what you guys think in the comment section :D
Currently, I am using the dosing pump to dose Sodium Bicarb and Calcium Chloride to my two tanks - Waterbox Cube 20 and Innovative Marine Nuvo 16.
My Dosing Schedule is as follows:
- 5 ml of Sodium Bicarb daily (Dosing 1ml every 5 hours)
- 1.2 ml of Calcium Chloride daily (Dosing 0.3ml every 5 hours)
Please note that the dosing requirement is different from tank to tank based on the water parameters. You'll need to do your own water testing to determine how much to dose.

Awesome video and documentary...Command Strips are awesome and so are the Voss bottles...I use them to hang my Neptune Dosers (16lbs) version.

Solid choice on the doser. Like you I wasn't sold on the coloured tubing - I went with clear vinyl tubing from Bunnings instead and it looks much cleaner :)

I’ve just gotten a new nano that you might be interested in- it’s a Dymax IQ9 nano drop off tank. I’m liking it, but it’s loud out-of-the-box and needs some mods to the downpipe to get the noise down. I’ve also replaced the included pump with a Sicce. Not a perfect tank, but worth the effort I think. Reminded me of you, as it’s a nano and you’re always modding things with your dremel. Makes me want one!

If someone ever needs to watch the tank while your out of town, the colors will help with diagnosis over the phone/texts! Or just do clear tubing and grab a label maker.

Great video! I need to buy myself a dosing pump pretty badly. Been doing it manually on the weekly, but I think my corals would appreciate it more if it was dosed in smaller increments at a time. Keep up the good work!

Great video! Make sure to add a one way check valve for each doser, or your fluid will back siphon.

I made Voss dosing containers for my freshwater fertilizers. Making your own provides a sense of accomplishment!

Loved todays video. Seeing how you set up the pump was really cool. I see what you mean about the coloured tubes, what if you only had black tubes instead? Then it keeps the clean look.

Your video's are absolutely stunning man! I love whatching them everytime they come online and even watch your previous content as it's just inviting me to do so. Maybe a suggestion from a "want to start reefing" guy over here.. I would really love to see a video in which you explain things such as what is important to know before startin a hobby like this. I know there are many channels that did this already but the one thing we can say if you make a video like this, is that you proved that what you do works. Also, when you make such a video I am sure that you can encourage many others to start reefing. One prejudice from my side is always that this hobby must be expense. Currently we are setting up a fresh water aquarium to practice some things and try around what works and what doesn't. But in the future I would like to have a salt water aquarium like you have over there. How long are you doing this already?

Thank you so much Richard for watching my contents 😁 That's a great suggestion! I will put this on my list of videos to make I have been in this saltwater hobby for more than 7 years now. I started with freshwater probably 10-15 years ago and there's no way I am going back to freshwater again 😅 There's so much "fun" with saltwater stuff although some of the stuff like corals, equipments, fish etc. can get quiet expensive

Awesome vid. A cheap alternative for anyone if they dont have a Dremel to remove logos on glass is a razor blade under a tap, just be careful :) Thanks for the vid

Awesome videos my friend! I really enjoy how simple and clean they are. Very relaxing for sure. IMO I like the colored tubing, but I feel what may throw it off is two are transparent whole two are not. Had they all been the same it might look better. Quick question. Those fittings on your dosing bottles. Are those just 1/4” RODI bulkheads with ridged rubbing and did you get them on Amazon? I’ve noticed you’ve used them on your copepods and phytoplankton setups too.

I use the BRS Kalk powder and mix it in 5 gallon batches. I have to dose alk and cal every once in a while but overall the kalk keeps up with my tanks needs.

I’ve had a Kamoer for my big tank for almost a year and still not set it up because I’m not sure what I’m doing. Looks easy enough though- I’ll have to get onto it

I get that feeling! It can be intimidating at first but it's actually quite simple once you start :) Just remember to calibrate the pump before you start as different heads have different flow. Let me know if you have any questions!

Clean work as usual, why don't you get a circular drill bit to makes clean holes. Im sure what you do works but it will be so much easier and they are so cheap!

I am too lazy to remove the voss labels so I just left them, the color of the dosing tubes tells me what they are.

Do you have a video on your mangrove? I bought 2 seed pods back in the end of October and they are just now starting to form their first leaves. I would love to see a video on your mangrove setup.

I literally just place my mangroves in the 3rd chamber without any substrates and it just keeps on growing :D Mine is definitely not the right way to grow mangroves hence why I am not showing it yet

@@BlueReefTank I have mine in the first chamber with a magnetic holder holding them. I have a small led on them. I had them buried in miracle mud but after 2 months of mo leaves forming kinda gave up and pulled them out. I noticed a pretty good amount of roots had grown so I gave them another chance out of the mud. I'm hoping the leaves will open up this month!

Thanks Kai. It's called bulk head fittings for RODI unit and I got it from my LFS. If you live in Melbourne, Australia, you can find one in Williamstown Aquarium :)

Thanks Cam! I currently have two Kessils and one AI. If you don't mind spending a bit more and want to future proof your tank, I would definitely suggest going with the Kessil. From the build, quality to the spectrum is just top notch.

Nice Vid, but one thing. Making the dosing solution: Step 1: Add the water Step 2: Then minerals If you change steps, like in the video, the reaction causes a massive heat production. That can destroy some of the ingredients.

Are you talking about the bulk head fittings? It's a 1/4 inch fittings that I got from my LFS. That's the only place I can find it so far :)

I would start by testing the water and then manually dose the tank. Once you get the hang of it and know how much your tank need per day, then you can invest in a dosing pump :)

That's the red mangrove plant that I have at the back chamber. They help with the filtration :)

Funny how different it is from country to country what you can and can not do in a rental. I can drill as many whole as i want ans there is nothing the landlord can do.
