Since recording this video, the specs have been updated to show a minimum input voltage of just 3.3v. This means that the unit could run off a 1S battery if need be.

It's nice that FT and the Coalition have been able to come up with a product, but it seems a bit bulky. I did a quick search and found an ESP32 module and GPS module that can probably do the job and in a smaller package. Seeed Studio XIAO nRF52840 and the SparkFun GP-735. The combination on a PCB would probably be thicker, but I think the overall package would be smaller and work with 5v from the FC.

Came here to say this. That's a huge board and the secondary design feature of this also acting as a GPS would would seem to be in conflict. I'm not gonna hide my FC GPS in my stack, for example. That and we are all buying M10s now.
@JohnCuppi
@JohnCuppi 9 ай бұрын
@@richardamiss7000 Agreed. Unfortunately I have yet to see an M10 based RID module out... I am guessing that it took forever to get this design approved, and then changing it out to M10 now would be a hassle. The Spekrum module appears to be an old M8 as well. A pity. With a 6 month relief period, maybe the market can introduce them by the end of it.

It needs to have more than just GPS. It has to also have a microcontroller and a broadcast system. The GPS is just one function. It also needs to send signals that meet the protocol. To do this it does need additional circuitry. So even if they use a smaller GPS chip, it will be larger than the gm10 by itself. Not saying it can not be smaller but it will never be as small as the gm10 by itself.

It’s awesome to see you supporting Flite Test like this. The funny thing is it seems while the price seems high that it’s actually in line with the cheaper modules on the market today… Ken Heron did a interesting test on his channel with like 7 modules on one quad to range test them. It was fairly interesting.

@SchubertTech
@SchubertTech 5 ай бұрын
That's exactly what I did. I got the whole thing, RID module, 3D case and 2 (two) LIR 2032 battery case at just about 20 grams. It has a on-off switch (battery case) and you could velcro the whole thing on. The LIR with 4 batteries and charger was like $8 or 9, and the battery case was about the same (albeit it was a 4 pack, so I have 3 extras now). So I want to say I am at about $120 for everything (FliteTest RID, battery/charger, and case for batteries). With two LIR2032 batteries I got about an hour of time before the cells dropped below usable range. You can just attach it do literally anything. I could theoretically put it on a Mini 2 which won't get the DJI RID update if it's flying Part 107, because now it's a custom drone, right? (partly sarcasm), but I do have it on my Josh Bardwell DIY FPV 5" drone I'm building. I could easily move it to other drones and attach with velcro. The way I see it is it's assigned (RID) to me, assigned to a "custom built FPV."

@@JoshuaBardwell Well, tbh if someone REALLY wanted to figure out where JB lived, this video wouldn't be the source, as many other videos have map overlays and aerial footage one could extremely geolocate with any number of tools. If he were in Ukraine and had anti-air toys, he would have had incoming kinetic friends in minutes. The RemoteID however is a unique qualifier that could easily be used elsewhere, creating issues for Joshua if they flew unsafely or in unauthorized airspace (say, over a military base). Now he's explaining how his RID # showed up over Camp/Base/Air Station XYZ on a certain date and time to an FBI agent. Much different security issue...both are worth protecting though... I've had crazy people come to my door just because the neighbors knew I flew drones and had a KZfaq channel, and I never fly over my house on a public channel.

I'm assuming most FAA or LEO are at best safety specialists but not electrical engineers familiar with RF engineering. If you said "Faraday cage," 99% of the population would have zero clue what you're talking about. Say it to a Ham Radio operator and 99% WILL know what you're talking about (IDK, I'm probably stretching that, but I think it's fair to say a Ham should understand RF and what the cage is doing). Just say you did it for safety of the module. "Look, I crash. I crash A LOT! I had to build this cage for it to survive. I had to ground it so if something energized touched it, it wouldn't be a safety risk". Bring up the fact your safer, newer appliances have a 3rd plug (ground). Pretty hard to argue with your logic. And since they're forcing us to modify Part 15, and non-Part 15 with a non-tested 3rd party, after market electronic, RF emitting device, there's little leg for them to stand on. However, the problems will really manifest when they re-write the rules to avoid these situations. If you're a pew-pew enthusiast in Cali, I point as an example the "button" and break down pin regulations for lower receivers. The more regulators re-wrote the laws, the more creative the enthusiasts got going around them, and in turn, the more silly the subsequent laws became until it reaches epic proportions. Look at what a Cali compliant "aye" "arrr" fifteen (Hooked on Phonics worked for me!) looks like nowadays.

So given that for almost any drone flights you are 'supposed' to be in VLOS could you also decide to have the remote ID on you given that VLOS range for most is only a couple of hundred metres and in this way you would only need one module

Can I wire this to my buzzer pads so I can turn it on and off from the transmitter? I wouldn’t want to cause rf pollution when I fly at a Fria (if there ever are any)

You could but did you notice the battery which will allow BLE to remain active for 1-3 years without additional power source. I can't see whats under that ceramic antenna but super capacitors are also a thing. His phone was just picking up stray bluetooth signals from that module. The module itself was not communicating directly with or reporting to his phone or at least that app. Now his phone relaying back to cloud command much like apple airtags do im sure was going on (as would be the case with any other bluetooth device nearby car, other phones, tvs.

reminds me of the tests ive been doing on two gps receiver , uncalibrated , one next to another ; one of the two is 5 to 15 m away . seems the same antenna im using but i dunno about the rest of the logic compared to that unit

What about the Dronetag BS? That has a listed weight of just over 1g (without antennas of course) and will offer GNSS pass through. I know this one is different because it exists and FT made it, but curious on JB’s take?

If Dronetag BS delivers on the promise of using an existing UBLOX GPS module in pass-through mode, without external antennas, then it will be on par with this. Today, Dronetag BS doesn't do that, as far as I know.

I wonder if the accuracy is limited by the bitrate of the bluetooth or the app or the GPS data itself. I wonder how accurate the GPS would be connected to a flight controller and asked to return to home. It would be interesting to see if the quad lands where it took off from.

The same accuracy as reg RTH via betaflight, no difference. BF doesn’t use any type of sensor fusion besides barometer and it’s the only way to do it w bf anyhow. INav is a bit better in this regard

In future models, I’d add a quick mount option and a power plug. This way it is easily swapped between quads.
