Agree 100 when it comes to game pacing! absolutely loved it. People who say it is just sc2 don't understand what are they talking about. I also really enjoyed how size of the units feel, they are not to smart in the sence they can be blocked, need often to be manually controlled to have maximum effectivity and thus they also don't clump as much as in sc2 which has been a major complaint from many people, which was nicely adressed. I am not a huge fun of the setting for now, but its aight and looks pleasent for the eye, the gameplay is where it matters the most for me. Feeling a bit sad that dont' have time to play this week.

So I really love what I see about Stormgate so far, as it has a lot of interesting mechanics that I like and that their overall approach is also on players that arent nessecarily pros in RTS, while also not neglecting pro play. This whole approach is awesome! So far, I actually like the grafics, they are a bit more functional and I think that is good for an RTS. More realistic grafics tend to visual clutter and thus actually a loss of Information. The best part about the grafics rn is that I actually see how Frostgiant changed up a view things to have better visibillity. showing that this is a big focus for them. One critique that I have is that I can not play it myself, because I have too low FPS (at max 15). I can play most completetive games like League, Dota, Sc2, but Stormgate sadly not. I have an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8250U and 8GB Ram but no grafics card (surface pro 6), so I can see that this is an issue, but its still kind of sad for me, because I would've loved to play it. For me a goal of 60 stable fps would be absolutely awesome.

I agree. I think most people just enjoy playing it and keep quiet about it. Playing around the last couple of days made me realise how much more fun it is to play than watch, which has in part to do with the game speed. Watching Stormgate is sometimes a bit tedious, because it seems slow compared to SC2. Playing it however feels juust right. I assume a lot of critics haven't actually bothered to play the game more than 10 games. There are legitimate criticisms about the game, but I am very excited once the 3rd race is introduced and we get tier 3 units coming our way. I think that alone will make the game much more exciting already. 3v3 also really excites me.

Yeah I definitely feel you on that front, the game is definitely more fun to play than watch for me at the moment too, whereas I still watch some SC2 (but no longer really play it). In any case, I'm sure Frost Giant are noting all of these issues and will work with the community to deliver on the game we all want without compromising their own vision of course.

I feel the same as well. After playing more than 20 games. The game feels fun and engaging. In this early stage, it has lots of potential. And its less punishing compared to sc2 cheeses. The pace of the game feels right. Playing the game is more entertaining compared to watching the pro games, somehow. Although sometime during the fight, its kinda hard to tell distinguish our units with the opponent. They might improve it along the way.

I 'm not worried about the art style. It's a game after all, not a movie. I like when the game works even on weak machines. So therefore I think the artstyle is ok. It is basically "medium polygon"-style and low resolution textures and a minimal amount of lighting effects. I think it's not super spectacular, but that's ok for me as reach is important. The game should work propperly on every PC. Offcourse.. I would prefere a high poly , high resolution realistic light and shadow effects game that looks like and less like a cartoon. There is one thing that actually bothers me . And that is that they botch the size relations of the buildings and the units. They should be of the same size in game as they are in lore. It's the same with the economy. I can't imagine workers continuously running back and forth between a depot and a mine... thats just stupid. The should have come op with something better.

their qwerty setup on Stormgate is incredible, press E to access all upgrades for all buildings built, press q to access buildings and the closest bob goes and builds it and returns to mining. These QOL features are huge and a strong reason why im looking forward to it over SC2
@Zerossoul
@Zerossoul 3 ай бұрын
It's a nice take on Age of Empires 4. The addition being planned buildings automatically get assigned a worker, and unit building is there as well. You lose some control over who builds what, and you lose time if you try to move a worker first then build (faster since the unit starts moving sooner) but then the game decides to pull a different worker. This bothers the heck out of me, but still, it's a nice QOL feature that I hope gets polished.

I also thought i had that problem but if you have the worker selected you can go into it´s building-menu so you instantly build with that.m But jeah that will probably get fixed pretty easy@@Zerossoul
@Qrzychu92

@@Zerossoul if you want to optimize this way, I think you just need to select the worker before placing the building. The order "move here" makes to give worker a "busy doing meaningful stuff" state over a mining worker. If that happens with an idle worker (like it already reach the waypoint), then yeah, it should be fixed - I haven't played the game myself, but watched devlogs about those QOL things :P

Hey Ghost, Latin American Starcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 Caster here, In regards to Feedback received from the LATAM community, I see mostly starcraft 2 players a little bit frustrated with the HP of units, don't get me wrong I'm a huge fan of long intense micro battles, but starcraft players seem to like the idea of tanks obliterating 50 supply worth of units if the enemy steps within range, Long Micro-Intensive battles are more of a Warcraft 3 thing and I can see why the SC fans are getting frustrated over how much HP the units have. Another common complaint Is the Art Style, nothing to do for now, the game is still developing so we hope the models improve over time. And by the way, please don't forget about the Casters! Please make sure to create a nice, clean-looking interface for observers, replays, and live-casts I'm planning to organize a bunch of tournaments for the growing LATAM fanbase of Stormgate. So far the game looks to be in great hands, keep up the good work, If I hear any new complaints I'll let you guys know.

Anyone who has played RTS ladder will immediately notice, this game is being developed by people who PLAY RTS A LOT Especially in the macro standardization, allowing for more adaptation of army control and combat strategies. This just makes every game feel more "man I could have done this better" vs "yeah well I wasn't looking, or, ya I missed 4sec gas timing" etc. Barrier to entry seems far better, and I believe they can still achieve the incredibly high skill ceiling that RTS is known for Wish I had a closed beta key because this is one of the first RTS that I feel is innovating in the best way to keep RTS relevant for the modern archetypes of players. Stormgate may not convert every single BW, SC2,WC3, or AOE4 vets, but it will almost certainly engage sooo many returning and new players

I admit, backed it on kickstarter, but so far have not had any fun with it in the beta. I'm 0 for a lot in match making with both races, and yet to have a success in co-op yet either, though in that case it hasn't helped that at least one team mate has AFK'd early on and of the two remaining players, one of them is me, who is apparently awful at this game based on my match making record. With no single player content, this game is not approachable right now for the average human being. I should note that while I haven't RTS'd in many MANY years, I did log over 1k games of warcraft 2 (via KALI), SC1, WC3, and SC2 back in the day. I even played multiplayer WC1 briefly in that short 1 year window before WC2 released. In SC2, the last RTS I played, I was a diamond player starting to get matched with master league players when I finally burned out and stopped playing. So while I'm rusty, older, and was never great at any RTS game, I'm not exactly a complete RTS beginner, let alone "craft-style rts" beginner. If I'm struggling this badly in all of the beta modes, I can't imagine the experience of the average joe whose checking it out. Now because of my background, while getting mercilessly obliterrated over and over hasn't been fun, I can still appreciate the QOL stuff, like the fatanstic qwerty set up. There are seeds of things I think could make this a game I'll love once single player is available. But, at the same time, I feel like the things that make this game stand out are subtle enough that some one who hasn't logged so much time in the craft games storm gate keeps getting compared to can't really be blaimed for not noticing them, and just seeing the game as too similar. Overal, I think the stats mentioned in this video about wish listing and kickstarter funding are more important then some vocal negative reviews, there is interest for this game, but I do think it would be wise of the storm gate PR team to consider this feed back and find ways to better highlight not just that this is a beta game, but the things about this game that differentiate it from its peers. I feel like most of the adverts I've seen for the game more or less come down to "a game like star craft 2 for fans of star craft 2" which I think makes sense since that's clearly the target audience, but doesn't do a great job of telling people why they should get this rather then just reinstall SC2 again if they feel that RTS itch.

@@people3865 Well to be clear, I didn't say I didn't like it, just that I haven't had any fun in the beta. I admit I'm surprised by HOW awful I am relative to apparently everyone in match making, but I knew I'd be awful, I spent thousands of hours playing, studying replays, watching commentated videos, and even using APM boosting tools in SC2 and I never got good at that game, just got less bad. These days I'm well into middle age with a job that requires a lot of over time, as well as having a wife, and a special needs child that command most of what little free time I find, so I simply don't have the free time necessary to get "not completely garbage" like I did over a decade ago. The reason I backed in spite of that was because I'm hoping I'll enjoy the single player, and I still am. Beta doesn't include that part. So while I was hoping maybe I'd win one out of every 10 matches, or at least be competitive enough to have some fun, while I wait for single player to be added, the fact I'm just getting continuously stomped, have yet to win a single game in any mode or faction, and not enjoying myself in the beta, has no impact on the mode I'm still hopeful I will enjoy. We shall, of course, see, however.

@@darrell5363 I've got good news for you... your really REALLY good at these games. Now I'm not saying you can't decide that anyone whose not a pro sucks at games, thats up to you, my point is that in only 31 games played, you ran into 19 players worse then you, if by your metric you suck, then by your own win record the vast majority of human beings who play storm gate are even worse then that, at whatever tier you put below "suck at these games".

I played Baldur's Gate 3 in early access, and hated it. The companions were all rude, the gameplay was unfun. I thought to myself the actual game would suck, and we'd never see a good Baldur's Gate after 2. Three years later the Baldur's Gate 3 I played on release was night and day. It's a ton of fun, the gameplay is great, the companions had stories I was invested in, and I've since sunk hundreds of hours into BG3. The moral? Never judge a game in early access/beta. Stormgate is in early beta and sure things can be worked on but it's a ton of fun already. It's like if Starcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 had a love baby. Or, if Terran got chronoboost and zealots. Art aside, which is terrible, even concept art which isn’t reliant upon its current state, I’m most disappointed that this is just another RTS. This was marketed as the first “next-gen” RTS, but there is absolutely nothing new or innovative about this game, and it doesn’t do anything that 90’s RTS games did. It’s just another RTS. Also, the campaign style is going to be awful. 3 missions once a year for $10? That’s not fun and greedy. To get what we got from SC2 in just a few years for about $200, will take 33 years and cost around $500, and these likely aren’t going to come with top of the line cut scenes, voice acting, and things to do between missions on the scale of SC2.

Its A beta, very early, etc. That is doing a lot of lifting to counter complaints. And you would be right, if this wasn't planned to release in 1.5 years. That isn't enough time to significantly change the art design. No not the whole art style. (Although the art style does heavily evoke the generic cheap style people are used to seeing from mobile, so that has to change) But having all the units being easily identifiable from each other at a glance is a very legitimate gameplay and art criticism. And having the devs mostly confirm they have little plans to change it isn't encouraging. Playing too much like StarCraft 2? Yeah that's silly to complain about, a lot of people just want more StarCraft 2 but supported. That being said aside from time to kill being longer I have not noticed any other notable game play innovations. Personality is a big one for me. Aside from current unit designs being unmemorable, their voice lines, especially for infernal are just as so. To have the vast majority in the beta be so luckluster doesn't encourage hope for what the rest will be like. I want this to be good, I just don't see how all of this can be changed with the deadlines they have set and the general lack of desire to at this point. I just hope FG proves they are taking the valid criticism seriously in the next few builds.

i wish people would give more usefull criticim, but even if not i think its toatly fair to critic the balance even in this early state because they do tournaments, and if the 2nd highest ranked player in the world a guy who has 90% winrate overall playing vanguard says he probably plays infernal at the tournament ... then maybe dont make tournaments until the balance is at least not 70-30 anymore xD thats a very valid point

I mean the tournament is just a way to market the game. It's no secret that the balance is very skewed atm. I believe Infernals have an 80% winrate in the master league and a 62% pickrate, not ideal. But the current balance of the game only has to be good enough to not upset the average player, they're not yet balancing it around the pro level and I'm sure that they have all been informed of this internally by Frost Giant.

I would agree, but you also have to take into consideration, that SC2 is not supported anymore. You might not care, but pro players, casters and tournament organizers will much more likely want to cooperate with frost giant studios rather than blizzard at this point. So naturally the pros and content creators will gravitate to stormgate, even if sc2 is just slightly better. That will result in sc2 becoming so unsupported (unfortunately I really love sc2), that stormgate will be the next thing for 2-3 years to come. The same happened to broodwar in 2010-2015. In that time stormgate will evolve and probably become as good as sc2, just a different alternative. At some point stomgate will coexist with sc2, bw and aoe. You underestimate the power of marketing. In that sense I totally disagree that stormgate has to be better than sc2, it just has to be almost as good for all the content to shift where the money is. If stormgate is soo bad compared to sc2, of course people won't switch, but time will tell.

If Starcraft 2 was releasing right now or let's even say Microsoft just announced Starcraft 3, I would agree, Frost Giant would have a big fight for that audience on their hands, but that isn't the situation. Starcraft 2 still enjoys some limelight thanks to it's community, but people are still itching for something new. One could argue that the original CoD Modern Warfare (2007), is better than the newest one, but people still want to move onto the latest and greatest thing.

My main criticism with Stormgate is lack of innovation. I understand the game isn't polished and we're looking at the barebones. I'm talking about the planned and current features. About the only thing I can praise here is rollback netcode. Don't get me wrong, this is huge. And that alone is worth putting money into the game, which I absolutely did. Where I do complain is the lack of anything else original. We're still using 2 resources which are spent the same way, still humans vs aliens, and still SC2 coop mode. gameplay is just the same. The spirit of an RTS is there for sure. It's just... we've seen this all before. But when I look at Beyond All Reason, almost everything there is innovative. And the 8v8 modes? I live those! It feels like a battlefield, and the engine can handle 16v16 games. That's something unheard of in the RTS industry. I love that I can move units in formation by right click dragging. I love that I can zoom out. I love the cloak / radar / jamming mechanics. It offers so many more strategies and tactics than are available in your typical RTS. They patch the game nearly every day, and If they were accepting money of any kind, I'd happily dump my money on them and never look back. But what does Stormgate offer me that BAR does not? (beside rollback netcode. Still worthy of backing for that alone.)

Didn't play it yet. But as a Starcraft player, it seems more battle/micro oriented than Sc2 huge macro needs. And for me it's quite positive. More fun fights. Art direction is a matter of taste. Agree it's not very original. But I quite like the Vanguard unit. (the Vulcan reminds me of Shirow's Apple Seed manga) The thing that disturbs me the most is the way unit are move. They often slide or seem to float above the ground. Map ground are lacking details too. Possible relation. And I hope they will make a soundtrack as good as SC2... But apart from this. The game looks VERY fun to play. Let's not forget that there will be a lot of work before it's out.

You say it issn't fair to compare this game to starcraft because that's a AAA game. Yet, that's what people are going to do. That's what you do in this video. That's how competition works. I've been playing starcraft / warcraft for 25 years, and this game honestly doesn't cut it. It feels like they're going for a nostalgic copy-paste, rather than creating something new. AoE4 was also hyped at launch. Game died after 2 months? Hype != Success

Frost Giant has literally been selling this game from the beginning as the next generation of RTS...the spiritual successor to SC2. Their devs come from Blizzard. They raised $35M + $2M in kickstarter cash under that pretense. To not compare this game to SC2 would be to go against the very foundation of its purpose.

But I became addicted to this game, the mechanics are incredible, I feel like I'm 12 years old again playing Starcraft 2 for the first time. I hadn't felt pleasure playing RTS for a long time and Stormgate gave me that feeling again.

Love most things about the game already. And been trying to give them feedback for the rest. Sad to see more negative stuff come from people but yeah like you said thats just normal. If we look at a game like Baldurs Gate 3, may it be a super different game, it still had an early release to get feedback and damn did people say a lot of negative stuff. The devs got so much shit at every step of the way and still proceeded to make a great game and become a big successful title. If key keep putting in this much love and keep responding to the feedback wish the same for Stormgate.

I like the base of the game, especially now that we're getting a PROPER 3 player co op mode with this teaser of a mission already feeling more dynamic than starcraft's co op. My main complaint of the game however is purely performance, how trying to pan the camera at all just SHATTERS the fps. Now granted, I'm not running an AMAZING computer, but it's still absolutely jarring going from 40 frames only to go to 10 when trying to pan to a fight. If they optimize it a lot more then I would be happy with it.

I'm excited to see more of this game. I played a lot of RTS as a kid, and currently I play a lot of League of Legends right now because my friends play it. I doubt they'll do this, but I think it would be kinda cool to see a game mode in an RTS that is a normal RTS game with the addition of other players running MOBA style heroes on the map to complete objectives and help with battles. I think that would be a lot of fun to play.

I expected something more groundbreaking, from all the buildup it got. There's a couple nice novelties-being able to select all your military units with spacebar, not needing to grab a worker to build something, etc. But overall, it feels a lot like Warcraft 3. I played half a dozen games in the beta, and it didn't impress me. The fact that it got wishlisted a lot on Steam means nothing. It was over-hyped, so certainly it got wishlisted.

I really doubt the "fortnite" style graphics are going to change much and the style is terrible, sorry. It is super generic and uninspired and that's really undeniable. I saw the ad of a random mobile game today with some demons and I thought "damn, I wish Stormgate had this design"... a mobile game. Something like Raid shadow Legends... and it still looked way better and with a lot more personality. Damn, look at Doom demons and marines... don't you wish you had those instead of this generic Overwatch characters? Slay the Spire with its super simple graphics has more personality than this! come on!

The developers have promised nothing less than the "next generation of RTS", and yes, that is a mouth full! So no wonder people's expectations are very high. And yes, this game needs to compete with a triple A title with a hugely bigger budget and 14 years of polish - because that's just what we're playing NOW and we need a reason to switch! Even if this is only like 25% of the final game, I cannot see a level of improvement being applied to this to ever get to be a worthy SC2 competitor, or even WC3. It looks terrible, the battles are nothing short of utterly boring, watching it makes me fall asleep. How is this the thing they come up with 14 years after SC2 was released???

1. honestly art style of SG and storytelling is so far frustrating. I have zero interest in searching for lore of any SG faction and unit. This is important because not all gamers play rts ladders. Art style and storytelling is kind of a fundamental aspect of a GAME, not only for a rts game. 2. frame drop is an issue and I guess no one will buy a new computer for SG. Furthermore key of success in starcraft and warcraft3 is that any computer can run the game. This means Frost Giant MUST make optimization great. optimization work takes time and frost giant has tons of work to do besides it. 3. sound system is weird now. I have 20+ units fighting and no fighting sound. hope this is a bug. 4. Though there are many people enjoying SG and keep quiet now, there are also many people DID NOT enjoy it and keep silence, or totally out of interest. Though the quality of the game right now just does not deserve that many "shy fanboys". Overall frost giant must do a lot of improvements.

I really enjoy the game. SC2 is my favourite RTS because it feels great, looks great and introduced me to esports. Ive not had as much fun playing anything else but i wanted to keep playing stormgate which is a good sign. I've analysed the artstyle for people to explain why its good and in game on high settings the game looks good in its unfinished state and that will be improved. What I have noticed and found really weird as my day job is an designer is that a lot of people commenting don't have any clue what a demo test is, how development goes or even what they're looking at and it makes folks look really stupid. The fastest way to get feedback and interate on your game is to get players testing the gameplay loop. This is what we're doing right now as this will inform the quickest and most useful way to get the core experience down and it's baffling that people don't understand this and makes me feel sick that it goes on and on. When im creating assets they change all the time as we get closer, I feel for the artists going through the process and people expecting magic, but that's what happens when no-one understands...

I think we should have like an interface with a function of choosing an RTS traditional controls mode or a modern one. It is impressive the amount of units we can see on the screen! I hope we have at least 4 races or eight and the programmers shouldn't balance anything just let the maps do the balance!😅

I mean they courted the starcraft players and that's exactly who they got. They've been doomsaying since 2010. For real, if you were clued into the Blizzard RTS discourse this past decade you'd think SC2 is dying 24/7 and it's the worst game of all time. Note, I don't like SC2 very much but the discourse around the game regularly gaslit me into thinking it was actually good, just because of how dumb the neverending bile spewing got. The community Stormgate has attracted are the types who will just not have any lenience for the game that's admittedly barely showing anything until recently. Not to say there aren't real criticisms to make, but MAN it's so predictable the feedback they actually do get. Even when they make a point (what even is this setting? a doom RTS? who are any of the characters? why is this exciting?) it sounds like such drivel. If FG haven't figured all this stuff out the first 100 times they were told this, I'd be surprised.

I have been keeping an eye on this game for a while from a distance and I have to say, I see nothing here that gets me excited. Its ok to be compared to another game if yours has an identity. From what I see Storm Gate has no identity. It legit looks like terran marines fighting warcraft orcs to me. I get that the devs want to focus on gameplay but gameplay alone is not going to cut it. They just blew a massive marketing opportunity to generate some serious buzz. There are some people who are going to completely pass on this game because of a lack of basic polish. All of starcraft 2's pre release footage was polished. Im honestly worried that this late into development there is still no signs of identity, polish or spectacle. It makes me wonder what the art teams have been doing all this time. This would have been a good time to toss on some polish to see if peoples rigs could even handle it. I really hope this game does well but all I see is budget Starcraft 2 and I was not a fan of SC2 multi player and the rampant elitism and toxicity around it.

Regarding visuals I'm only concerned about them trying to make and epic and grounded story (from what we've seen in cinematics) while having the goofy as f*ck artstyle. For exemple the rework of the edgehog is cute and funny... but that's the thing here, it's supposed to be a machine of war in a time where humans are desperate. I would've been far less involved in SC Wings of Liberty back in the day if it had the visuals of plant vs zombies.... Pas that point, I had a super great time during the open beta, lot of good stuff and I can't wait for release knowing there will be a 3rd faction and fleshed out coop :o

I enjoyed the game, but I think the game still feels clancky and suffered some lags. But the main issue to me so far is that the snowballing mechanics are too strong. I haven't felt in my games or in the games that I watched that there are enough chances to comeback. The veterancy mechanic and the fiends mechanic mean that when you get an advantage, gets even stronger. That needs some improvement in my opinion. Also something I don't love is that coming from SC2 some units like the Atlas feel too slow and don't feel that good. I like more how tanks sieging feels to control and for example, microing marines feel much better to me than exos. Let's see the final result, but so far I'm not enjoying it that much although there are good ideas.

My only criticism has been that every video bar one has shown brute/fiend rushes that have overwhelmed the Vanguard. The last set of tweaks have hopefully balanced this a bit but the infernals seem almost invincible at the moment. Hopefully the more the games are analysed and new strategies and builds are perfected then the Vanguard can start winning more. There may be 10,000 videos of Vanguard wins I haven't seen and if that's the case then my argument is null and void so please let me know where I can see them.

Listening to this is painful. You don't understand because your analysis skills are wanting and full of logical fallacies. No. The criticism is a significant issue. In summary it's simple. It's not good as the existing RTS games in too many aspects. Period. As a indie game sure it's great. If it's done by 15 year old, it's amazing. But we are not doing relative comparison are we? It is only good, and this is imo a very significant positive, in it's much higher supply cap and the ability to alter terrain. But that's not enough and I belive that's the reason for the negativity.

Balance-wise I didnt run into issues yet but I dont know why my modest hardware setup cant run the game fluently above 20-30 FPS whether it runs on high or low settings. The units however, feel kind of soulless or unfinished except for the workers of each faction. Furthermore, I dont like the fights - i get that they wanted to avoid fights that only take a few secs but do they really have to be so slow? Hotkey settings dont feel intuitive as well. So far, I‘m disappointed but remain hopeful that the finished game will be great.

I am very surprised at the graphics of Stormgate. It's 14 years after Starcraft 2, and the graphics are,...um, not much better, if, about the same, Lol. My biggest grime about the game is, and I have only played a bit of coop to test the game out on beta, is that, there is nothing really cool about any of the units. When I played SC1 and SC2, there were just some units that were just incredibly cool. The SC1 siege tank. The Sc2 siege tank booming. Archons. Ultralisks. The 3 race dynamic. Guardians. Marines and ghosts. Dark templars. There were some really cool units. I don't get that feel at all about SG. But in it's defense, it provides an alternative to SC2 and is FREE. But will is succeed? Or will zerospace or another one beat it? Or will Sc2 still remain the (unsupported) king. Time will tell

I don't get why people say just go play Starcraft. Starcraft is a dead brand. There is no new content coming and there hasn't been anything in years. This game is building towards the next Starcraft like experience, with new missions, new co-op, new everything. I played a bunch of the beta and it's pretty limited right now, but you can see where it's heading and it's nice to see it develop. I do find some criticism valid though since they're rushing the competitive element of the game in beta.

RTS is my favourite genre still play WC3 till this day, unfortunately my friend and I who are dying for a new rts are really skeptical of this game (he even bought the £200 kickstarter) The most critical problems we've found is this is not a beta, this is an alpha. A beta should really be something that should feel like an end product with missing features and understandably full of bugs. This feels like an alpha, missing textures placeholders everywhere still haven't added in all the races units and tech, terrible unit control, a weird system where they automatically add your units to your control groups meaning you have to reassign them whenever you create new ones because it's adding any new unit to all your control groups (There is probably a setting for turning this off but I haven't looked, I hope there is), and just in general it doesn't feel very fun so atm my friend and I are huffing a lot of copeium but we're worried it's not going to turn out very good. 2 years of development and almost $40 million in investment. I'm a programmer I understand that developing games is expensive, difficult and that throwing money at a project doesn't just make a project better, but this is a lot of money and time to create something that should be a lot more polished than this. People complaining about the art that's completely subjective personally I don't mind what the game looks like, although I really have to agree with the "Lack of soul" doesn't feel like these units have been made by the same people who made all the races of the games we love, where every unit felt unique and had its own character. But there is a real problem, path finding and AI. They brag about network roll back code being amazing but unfortunately this isn't really something most players are going to feel. The amount of times your units will just slide into each other and just get stuck not knowing how to path around your own units has made the experience really bad for my friend and I so far, this is the most important part about making an RTS game and it's been very neglected. Also we both came to the same conclusion to us the game just feels bad. couldn't even really put a finger on it exactly it just feels bad to play atm, hopefully it will get better with time and we will see another golden age of RTS games, but we both fear that if this game flops no one will try to revive this genre.

I really don't think this is a good stance to take, the whole "vocal minority" thing, like man, it's not a minority. If anything a lot of people who have had the access early and want this to do well are holding our tongues and trying to hype it a bit. I think this just comes across too dismissive, yeah the art style kinda sucks. I think a lot of us were hoping these were place holders... it seems they're not placeholders. It doesn't matter if you've got the lower budget and stuff, you compete with the competition as it is. Also you're really leaning on this "it's an early game guys" Then man, it shouldn't be this public this soon. Many people have also said that, that they're killing their own hype by showing so much so soon that no one's gonna be existed by any of this. I think people that are the long time SC2 supporters and stuff want this game to work out well, but you gotta look at some of these criticisms are warnings... Like us raising our hands and saying like...Guys, this isn't good enough, this isn't going to do it... It's mostly people who are on the side of wanting it to be good but who are concerned a bit about how it looks, how it's playing, how its being launched

My major point of concern is how little of a focus there is on the campaign, the story, the world building and well... fun? Warcraft 3 is one of my favourite games of all time. It is not a favourite because of the skirmish/competitive mode, infact I have never met anyone in person who cared about that stuff very much at all. No, Warcraft 3 was great because of 2 things; 1. The incredible campaign with storytelling, varying scenarios and RPG mechanics which really immersed the player in the story and the universe. 2. The amazing map editor which allowed for endless experimentation and community growth. Stormgate being primarily being pushed as a successor so SC2s competitive scene at the moment is a let down to me, because that is not what excites me about the RTS genre. I want fun, creativity and immersion. Im not saying these elements wont manifest at all, and perhaps they will even be a much greater focus later, but I have tried to find coverage of this game from people interested in what I would call the "casual" perspective, but so far all I have not found any such coverage, its all E-sport /competitive style discussions, which is worrying. Why do people remember Command and conquer/Red Alert? Because of the micro? No, because of Kane, because of the wacky cutscenes because of the fun unit concepts. Why do people remember Empire earth? Because of the great unit balance? Of course not, because of the ability to go from stone age to futuristic combat, to experience various heroes through time. Why do people remember Stronghold? Because of the tight controls? No, because of the ability to build your own castle designs, to lay down traps, to express yourself in your base design. Back when RTS games were big, the competitive scene was a natural off-shoot of a few games like starcraft 1, but it was not the focus of the genre.

I think people just need to recognize that BALANCE will never be perfect or solved completely in ANY online game. There has yet to be a single online game that has perfect balanced characters, factions, weapons... it's just not feasible if you have anything over 3-4 options (think of rock, paper, scissors). I gave it a go and got absolutely destroyed, mostly because I've not played a single RTS in the last 10 years. But I managed to enjoy the unfinished experience and see the potential in the game. There's no perfection in gaming, or anything in the world. I'm happy for the devs and what they've made.

I mean we can only criticise what we see. If the game plays slow and the art style is meh then saying 'it's only a beta' doesn't mean much. It could change a lot or might not change much at all. The art direction according to the devs posts doesn't sound like it's going to change unfortunately. And workers hardly taking damage and defensive structures being super strong sounds like they want to protect noobs from dying in first harass.

The saddest part about how half-baked Stormgate is in it's current form is seeing a bunch of RTS fans throw themselves at the game, what a total lack of self respect and self control they must have to be this attached to any kind of representation of the RTS genre. Frost Giant had their chance to release a compelling and interesting product and instead they've shown they are just lighting cigars with 500 dollar bills and slamming their nose in the "sugar bowl". Chance blown, this games gonna be dead on arrival.

I like this game. I have it open in the backroundd right now. But we absolutely can and will judge it against SC2. If you buy into the promise from a games studio and defend something with 'just give them time' you are a fanboi. I will give them time because this is a true beta. But on full release I will be looking at it and thinking 'is this better than SC2'. It's a hard bar reach but that's where it's at. We've all seen the meme 'SC2 players looking down at all the other games' t's funny coz it's true and if FrostGaint want to get that crowd they are going to have to blow SC2 out of the water. And you don't do that with a promise of in 5 years the game will be good. All that being said. I'm having fun. I can see the potential and hope nothing less than the best of luck FG. If anyone can pull it off it's those blokes.

What you cannot seems to get somehow is that all of those are what we call design decisions - you are not going to die in a sec, you are going to have something to do with creeping and so on. But whats missing from your analysis is why in the "phantasm" side of things those things made sense in the games they are coming from - in warcraft 3, there were neutral settlements that were not part of any faction and they could be engaged - that was very much a warcraft fantasy that stayed in Wow as well. You have major factions, but all over the world there were secondary encampments, that lived separated and so on. I don't see any of this inside the fantasy of Stormgate. What are those camp really? Wtf is this catapult there? How does this making sense. No explanation is provided why would they have vision power or how killing them would speed your units. Thus, the whole aspect looks very much collaged on top of a game idea. That element of missing cohesive fantasy is pretty much all over Stormgate. No reason why there are humans with swords, no honest reason for that. And then the second part is - if humans were brought to the brink of extermination - then what is the point of the current design? Nothing inside the Vanguard shows adaptation to that, they are not defensively closed as you can imagine from people who know what the infernals are while one can clearly argue that the destruction of whole mineral lines in a setting that talks about obliteration of planets makes sense? Last but not least - that happy version of the battlefield, like wtf. Nothing even close to a apocalyptic future, no ruins, no sense of prior death and destruction. Warcraft 3 type of map. Thats what makes the game really bad in my opinion.

My criticism is that there's too much melee battles. Ergo 2 ant colonies crash and the player with the stronger ants wins. This is gonna be boring in the long run. I sincerely hope this changes when they add T3 units, but honestly I doubt it. And sadly I haven't been wrong in the past. And the art style won't change either, they will complement all the animations that are missing, but they won't redo the bulky unit models that are already in the game. It looks cartoonish like Warcraft 3. Not a deal-breaker, but not beautiful either. However the problem with all the criticism is that games with a lot of it usually drop in player numbers quite drastically after release.

Lots of negativity but I know the game is good. It fixes SC2 death balls and stuff that can destroy a full army in a blink of an eye. It is harder to finish games and usually wins who makes more money rather than being a rock paper scissors game. That makes SG feel much closer to SC1 which is the best sign possible, but it's easy to play instead of being the hardest game to play of all times. So this with a custom map tool and a better way to monetize than SC2. . . SG has a bright future guys

my biggest concern with this game is that units are not fun to use. in sc2 you have blink stalkers, phoenix, carriers, stim marines, helions, etc. its fun to use those units, to micro them. in stormgate units are not fun, you can micro in small fights, but in big fights its a really big mess. u cant micro, un cant see whos winning, u just A click and hope it ends in your favor. its also too slow. i know in sc2 watching all your workers die in a few seconds, might not be fun for some people but it makes the games more exciting and u have to pay more attention. in stormgate its all very slow, every game looks pretty much the same, units are not fun, i cant see whos winning, etc. even watching pro play this game, is not fun, sometimes i dont even finish the games. i hope it gets better in the future.

I'm not sure I understand how you intend to rationalise "RTS players want something new!" while simultaneously saying that it's "OK that it is very derivative". They can't reinvent the wheel, but the wheel they make needs to be either different enough or strictly superior to the old one - and you've already ruled out the latter, at least when it comes to fo production quality. Don't get me wrong, people are partially at fault for being used to any playable releases (Early Access) being 90% of a finished game and expecting that out of this demo; but the game still needs to impress more out of the gate to stand a chance. Comparatively, I've been playing Global Conflagration, which is for all intents and purposes Generals 2. In contrast to Stormgate, it's changing things quite a bit from it's inspiration while remaining very familiar and accessible, but most importantly - it's not competing with its spiritual predecessor, as Generals is very janky to run on modern PCs and is literally not sold anywhere. Anyway, speaking of all of that, I really dislike how slow and spongey the combat is in Stormgate. StarCraft and Warcraft were already boring due to that, never a fan, but Stormgate kinda makes it worse.

because that's what a beta is. If it was miscommunication, then they should come out and say it. Have you ever been in beta? They are basically the full product most of the times and you do them for network testing, balance and bugfixing... Saying this is a beta is the same as saying "this is pretty much what you'll get with some improvements here and there". I'm sure they will fix the sounds and add the missing models, the third race and so on... but don't expect a complete overhaul of everything

@@shikarymtgyou’ve been gaslit by modern AAA gaming. A beta isn’t just a network test 3 weeks before the game comes out. The game isn’t even in early access yet, and when it hits early access in 5-6 months, it’ll probably still be a year until the final release. The people who think stormgate is a nearly finished game are just ignorant or stupid. It’s not the fault of the devs.

It's a good game. Many people jump into conclusions too quickly, or just throw hate. By hate i mean destructive feedback like: this game is trash. It looks like a mobile game. There is nothing to do in the first 10 minutes of the game. But that's okay, ive been playing SC2 and SC1 for so many years and I simply see the reasons why it is a good game. It solves some of the biggest problems that SC2 suffer. The game feels closer to SC1 which is the best sign possible, also solving some of the problems it has, which is just being too hard. That's it. Well done SG

I think the thing that is really killing the game is the micro. All of the effort was put into macro mechanics. You can build units from the hotkey menu without having to have the buildings selected. Many worker mechanics are basically managed for you. The macro mechanics from StarCraft 2 were too punishing, so they made them global abilities that you can store up and use strategically. Meanwhile the micro combat is just bleh. The units only fill the most standard roles. There's nothing interesting or unique about unit abilities and interactions at all. The combat in this video is a perfect example. Two columns of soldiers line up shooting at each other, and it's not really very entertaining to watch. The battle is the real reward, especially to the beginner. So you have to learn all this complicated build order stuff that is far more complicated than it ever was in Brood war, only to be disappointed with the exciting part. Which really has the opposite effect of attracting a more general audience. People naturally understand combat. People aren't very good at figuring out the most optimal build order, and maximizing all the macro mechanics. It's why MOBA's eventually took over. MOBA's are entirely combat. And this is why we're seeing the feedback that we're getting. There's plenty of new innovative features, so why are people saying it's bland? It's because the combat is bland.

To be honest this feels like hopium and copium. Check out the first trailer of SC2 at the time of it's introduction (2007, terran vs. protoss), and tell me it was as much a mess as Stormgate currently is. Yes, the final artstyle became more polished, and the game much more balaned. BUT, it already was very clear and legible, with a much more mature graphics than Stormgate, it had a more fun, varied and cool looking roster, and the races and a bit of their backstory and relations were discussed AT THE FIRST TRAILER, making it much more likely to understand these races and care about them. I'm willing to bet that many people, myself included would have enjoyed that pre-alpha build, THREE YEARS before release, much more than they enjoy Stormgate's Beta, and the game is apparently supposed to release later this year. It needs at least two years more in the oven. Especially with a compelete overhaul of the graphics. Yeah, I know. League of Legends sells. You are not going to attract those young players to a sophisticated RTS game with just a kiddy art style. And you are going to lose the grown ups who can't stand it.
