In collaboration with General Electric Company, Brunswick produced an acoustic phonograph for playing electrically recorded 78s called the Panatrope. Many believe this was Brunswick's finest phonograph.
The S31 was one of the earliest electric phonographs, in a time when most phonographs were still wound up by hand. This model was sold as a Panatrope with radio.
The S31 was "radio at its best, even at high noon under a blazing sun...tone that for clarity rivals the finest night-time reception."
RESTORATION
This phonograph/radio took over a year to restore. The motor was completely dismantled and serviced. All the major wiring which was very brittle was replaced with fabric-covered reproduction wiring. The variable capacitor which had mostly crumbled was replaced as well as the tubes. The tone arm was missing and it took almost a year to hunt one down. The magnetic horseshoe cartridge was not working and had to be restored. Veneer was missing in some spots and had to be matched and replaced and the cabinet was cleaned up and given a new coat of shellac.

It's amazing how well that old stuff worked when it was new. People today have no idea because of the way the machines have deteriorated over time. That AM radio sounds better than most FM radios do today. Around the time that machine was manufactured, Brunswick staged a sort of "tone test" similar to Edison tone tests. There was a jazz band playing on a stage behind a screen. The audience assumed it was a real jazz band, until the curtain was lifted and it was a Brunswick Panatrope! No, people weren't stupid or tone deaf in those days. Like I said, people today have no idea how well that stuff worked when it was new.

@Domen Gregorčič Hello Domen! And thank you for your comment. What you said makes perfect sense because, as you know, during radio's golden era AM existed before the advent of FM. In fact, AM was referred to as the "broadcast" band. Radio receivers had two bands -- "broadcast" and "shortwave", the former being what is now referred to as "AM". If that stuff worked half as bad as people today think it did, it never would have sold.

Great!!! Can you use any fiber needles instead of steel needles? I am wondering what kind of sound it can reproduce with a fiber needle.

I'm sure I can although I've never tried it. The needles I use are Meritone and they last for about 12 plays each.

Be careful with those "long playing" metal needles. They are made of a harder material than the regular one-play steel needles, so they wear out your records more quickly. Combied with an electric head, which is also more heavy than an acoustic reproducer, the damage can be quite severe. You have a fantastic machine otherwise ! It's very beautiful, and I'm really amazed by the sound quality of thoses early radiograms.

I purchased, I don't remember from where, but they make steel needles with a ruby sapphire tip, that can play 400 records per needle. I am not sure if this is more gentle on a record, but I would think so, as I would think that sapphire would be a better shape to follow the record groove.

Is that a Radiola 60 in this? Does it use the "Tomcat" amplifier with a 104 speaker, or is it a little newer than that? Thanks now. Really nice sounding machine. I have an earlier one with a Radiola 28 in it.

This would have competed with the Victor RE-45 radio phonograph. In fact, I can hear the mechanical governor when you spin up the turntable, and it sounds like the motor would look a lot like the Electrola motor. Unfortunately for manufacturers of these high end units, the Great Depression was just about to start when they introduced these. Only the most fortunate few could afford one when they were new!

PeeWee It’s worth restoring if you’re going to use it often. It will only play 78 rpm records so you need to have some of those. It requires a lot of work to restore.

Nice video but the music disc is from 1937, with much greater fidelity than was designed for this nearly 10 year older device. Please make another video with a disc from the 1920's era, it would be interesting.

Not really- Magnetic pickups were still being sold and used in 1937. It electrically picks up the signal, so, no, it is fully functional with it.

Why is this referred to in the description as an acoustic phonograph? It has a magnetic tone arm and an amplifier. That is not acoustic.
@SpinAlleyStore
@SpinAlleyStore 7 жыл бұрын
The acoustic phonograph referred to in the description is not this one, it's the first one Brunswick produced for playing electrically recorded 78s. It was called the Panatrope. The description mentions that the S31 was one of the first electric phonographs.
@cricketrecords
@cricketrecords 7 жыл бұрын
Okay, I see that. So the acoustic Panatrope is considered by some to be Brunswick's best phonograph? Better even than an amplified player? That must have been a really good acoustic machine!
