Hi thanks for sharing. Here in Scotland there’s quite a lot of confusion re so called ‘P3RD’ filters where the ref to ‘RD’ remains unclear in the context of whether they offer less protection from Covid-19 compared to P3 filters. The ones your using don’t appear to state ‘RD’ so I’ve got some added work to do to see whether they’re effective. Keep up the good work abs stay safe. John

The first filter you said to throw away after exposure. The bit you said "Removes with difficulty", can be and is meant to be removed so the white particulate filter can just be replaced on it's own. The filter part number is 3m 5n11 and they can still be found if you look around. Thanks for your service - Steve

d1v1s1onby0 Yes I have removed them. The package often comes with two pre-filters in it for just that purpose. But compared to the 6035/6038/7093 enclosed particulate filters, they are just not as safe for our purposes and I would only use them as a last resort, given how tricky they are to clean.

It is rather easy to trace the filter or gas cartridge onto a piece of fabric, paper towel or other breathable material. Then cut it to get a pre-prefilter to use as an outer layer. I used some non-woven from old furniture after hand washing and drying it, it seems to repel water droplets, it did not get at all wet when I was wearing the mask outside and it rained. It also helps to make the filters last longer, since it catches the larger dust particles. since it is not the primary filter it is OK to wash and disinfect it by whatever method.

@staffnsnake
@staffnsnake 4 жыл бұрын
That filter shown here (plus pre-filter) is a vapour filter that absorbs formaldehyde among other organic vapours. So it would present the same issues as the regular paint vapour filter plus pre-filter in that it is difficult to keep clean. The 6035/6038/7093 are better because the filter is completely encased and droplet-resistant, whereas the setup you mention exposes the pre-filter to droplet contamination.

Our Department here in Queensland has these but we are planning on cleaning the the mask filters in-situ, while still wearing it, waiting for it to dry thoroughly, then remove, with a spotter checking coverage. I feel that this reduces the risk of contamination of the inlet ports during the removal of the filter cartridges. What are your thoughts? DM me if you like or email. @nitramluap
@nitramluap 4 жыл бұрын
Michael Tobin We are using gown/balaclava or the coveralls (being careful to ensure hood doesn’t contaminate your back when removed). What we will be using will be based on what’s available I think as we’re running out of everything. The respirator is cleaned as the last step, while still on, using antiviral wipes (eg. Clinell wipes) in front of a mirror to ensure good coverage. We’re using sealed cartridge filters and not removing them, just cleaning all external accessible surfaces. So far so good.
@staffnsnake
@staffnsnake 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael (again) and nice to meet you Paul. I would not recommend a simple wipe if you have been involved in directly intubating a covid patient. But if you were just wearing it for general use while transporting a patient or in an ED red zone, perhaps it might be okay. I couldn’t say. Here is a link to 3M’s literature on use of their respirators during an influenza pandemic www.3m.co.uk/intl/uk/ohes/segments/healthcare/(9666a)OH_ReusableTechBulletin_lft.pdf

Is it necessarily a good idea to remove them for cleaning? This could create a entry point for virus particles. Since 6035 filters last months at a time, I usually leave mine attached to the mask during cleaning, clean the whole thing, and store it in a bag.
@rickw4160
@rickw4160 4 жыл бұрын
Excellent point. I recommend a slightly different way, which is to use a suitable disinfectant to wipe down the outside surfaces, including around the cartridge interlock area before removal. Then remove the cartridges, and then wipe back side of the cartridge mating area. Put these aside to dry and for safe keeping. The half face or full face mask should be decontaminated following whatever procedure your local officials are comfortable with. You do need to clean these, as your own resperatory droplets will make the inside kinda funky. The straps also could potentially transfer the virus to other surfaces, not to mention any viral particles you had stuck to your face (but not entered into your body) can be transferred onto the mask as well.. 30ml bleach + 7.5l water, TBquat, or virkon 1% are all acceptable options. Each option has specific steps and times to follow. All require a final rinse of clean water, and then allowed to air dry.
@staffnsnake
@staffnsnake 4 жыл бұрын
No you must remove the filters for cleaning. You don’t have to worry about possible entry points for the virus through the filter aperture. They have static charge and could not reasonably be expected to fall off the plastic housing and into the wearer side of the filter. You must clean and decontaminate the respirator after use.

How many hours of breathing through the 2135 filters do we get until we have to replace them? 3M literature states that these disk-style particulate filters (2135/2091/2097) can be used for as long as you can comfortably breathe through them, so why do you consider them as only one-time use?
@staffnsnake
@staffnsnake 4 жыл бұрын

@@staffnsnake But that's only because of the textile nature of the filter and the fact that it's surface can't be disinfected like the other filters with a plastic surface, correct? If you don't touch it with your bare hands for the 72 hour duration for which the virus can be alive on the surface after each use, it should not pose any risk and protect you pretty much until it's clogged up by dust and other particles from the environment, right? You just have to be careful not to touch their surface, transfering the virus to your hands and then to your body through your mouth, eyes, etc.. I think it'd be pretty wasteful to just throw these filters out after each use, wouldn't it?
@SKMatoBB
@SKMatoBB 4 жыл бұрын
@@staffnsnake Why would the droplets damage the filter any more than any other particulate filter? The inside of these disk-type filters has pretty much the same structure as the replacable pads that you put underneath the cover of the plastic filter. Making the only difference between them the nature of the surface of the filter as I described in the previous comment.
@staffnsnake
@staffnsnake 4 жыл бұрын
SKMatoBB I guess it would depend on how soon you expect to reuse the 2138 filter. I also suspect that most hospitals would take a dim view of ever reusing any kind of fabric equipment that had been soiled by patient bodily fluids and not actively sterilised. Moreover, there are other pathogens besides SARS-CoV-2 in pharyngeal droplets. I need to stress that the whole exercise of using these 3M respirators is for while we await arrival of medical grade PAPR systems. This equipment is not the plan, it’s the fallback from the main plan.

Adi Andre I am not a rep or an agent for 3M. I only did videos on them because that was what was available. There are other brand out there like Sundström from Sweden that some are using. One hospital in Sydney has those. So you will have to do your own research on the particulate filtering qualities of any filters you get. If you can, you should also get quantitative fit-testing done for whatever you find. The vapour filter components are not relevant to viruses or bacteria. Cheers

I'd like to chime in here for a bit. Any respirator that pressurises properly works with a P2 or P3 filter. Alternatively you can use military surplus gas masks with 40mm NATO NBC or ABEKP filters which are much more common, cheaper and effective than the type of proprietary connectors you would find on 3M type respirators. Even if the filter itself is expired it retains its particle filtering properties.

I not sure if n or kn can filter the virus while inhaling but it looks like it helps to filter breathing out. But the cartridge filter systems with the correct cartridge that I have seen use a check valve that won't filter while exhaling , so it might be much better to stop the person from getting it but not spreading it , So the check valve it needs filtering the air IMO. Do you concur with my hypothesis ?
@staffnsnake
@staffnsnake 4 жыл бұрын
Jacob Clark It isn’t an hypothesis, it’s reality. There is no filtration or exhaled air. If you are doing anything invasive for a patient with a reusable respirator, you *must* cover the exhalation port with a standard surgical mask.

I use a 3M 6200 medium respirator with a pack of 2, 3m NIOSH 7093CN or 7093 P-100 Particulate filter and replace them every month or 40 hour of use. The respirator must fit tight on your face. I have a full face respirator but cannot use it because the public still cannot understand the nature of COVID 19 ( a RNA with 26000 - 32000 codes) that mutates very rapidly to adapt. It isn't the case if all of us would be infected, the question is when and for ages over 70 the mortality is at least 10 %.

P100 is the same as P3 and it will work well for stopping SARS-CoV-2 ; remember to do a 'fit' test to make sure there is a tight-seal on your respirator ( buy a respirator made of plastic and rubber/silicone, not a paper-type mask, then you'll get a good seal ).

As staffnsnake commented, the n95's and n100's also require fit testing- they do make them in every size, and also your fit certification is only for that one particular mask from one particular company. For example, you can't take a 3m versaflow and replace it with a 3m 1860 without 2 seperate fit tests. Not even hospitals here in the states are doing it, as there are hundreds of registered n95' masks, and we're using what we can get our hands on. and there were NEVER fit tests here in the U.S. for KN95's, as.. well.. they were not allowed here. But their using it.

If your wanting to add the P100 filter to the cartridge filter, you can use a GM 502 adaptor that snaps onto the face of the cartridge. It has a male bayonet fitting just like the respirator. Otherwise the P100 pancake filter attaches directly onto the respirator.

Sir, CDC recommends not to use respirators with exhalation valves for sterile field as it can contaminate the sterile area. What is your opinion regarding that?
@raphjern
@raphjern 4 жыл бұрын
Dr. Karnav Patel This is because exhalation valves do not have filters when exhaling. It is useful to breath out more easily. So respirators with exhalation valves can protect oneself very well but are not designed to protect others or the sterile area. Its better to get a resiprator with non exhalation valves.

Hey Ralph! That is my view as well. In order to avoid the fog, the solution proposed by Staffnsnake is to cover the exhalation port only with a surgical mask so that there is still some airflow allowed; However I struggle to understand how the fog wouldn't be an issue in a full face respirator with the exhalation port covered with a surgical mask, as the airflow rate coming out would still be greatly reduced/restrained....It would be great if someone with a full face respirator could actually test it to clear all doubts. Cheers
