Every rifle has a story and this is the story of this Egyptian contract FN-49. We learn where it started and of some if its travels through the markings on the rifle. If these rifles could talk...
Much of the information on this rifle was found in The FN-49, The Last Elegant Old-World Military Rifle by Wayne Johnson. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for information on the FN-49.

Cool - I pulled out my Egyptian SAFN49 and followed along going over the marks. Also a rifle without inport marks, which I now know (thanks to you) means it's an IDF capture piece - cool! BTW, Battle Order sent me over.

Not "Battle Rifle" this would have been the last of the Service Rifles, prior to WW2 everyone was trying to field their own self loading Service Rifle (as compared to their bolt action Mausers and SMLEs)

Yeah I believe it was. Did the firing pin cause any trouble when it broke? I highly recommend the book in the description if you want to dive in to the markings but being an Egyptian contract also, it should be fairly similar to this one.

Which caliber FN, 30-06, 8mm, 7mm, 308 is the most functional for cycling?
@HistoryinFirearms
@HistoryinFirearms 7 ай бұрын
Not sure what you mean by functional for cycling. The gas system is adjustable. I do have a video on that if your curious. 👍
@rrbearcat
@rrbearcat 7 ай бұрын
@@HistoryinFirearms Yes, I have a 7mm and I have adjusted it. The correct adjustment range between not ejecting brass and destroying brass is very small. After about 30rounds heating up the gun, I'm curious if the adjustment range for the other calibers it comes in is more forgiving and has a larger acceptable adjustment window.
@rrbearcat
@rrbearcat 7 ай бұрын
Shooting notes: 140grain federal premium Approx. 7 full turns to expose the entire gas port. At 2.5 full turns optimal feeding. 3 full turns when it is clean, oiled, and cold. As it heats up 2 full turns is better. At 1 full turn, brass gets launched violently forward. At 2 full turn, brass gets launched 1-o’clock but not very far. At 2.5 turns, brass gets launched 2 to 3 o’clock. At 4 turns, brass starts to stove pipe At 5 turn, no ejection.

Is there a special way to load these with stripper clips, or a nonstandard stripper clip that must be used?
@HistoryinFirearms
@HistoryinFirearms 2 жыл бұрын
The standard 8mm clip does sit high in the guide on these. I have had pretty good luck with the Romania clips but it is a standard clip. I know some people have filed off the outside tabs on the clips only leaving the center one on each side.
@nicholaspatton5590
@nicholaspatton5590 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I have filed the outer bumps on some Yugo clips and they don’t get hung up no more, but then they don’t work well in other guns afterwards. I’m on a quest to find “Egyptian” 8mm clips. Spamming everyone who shoots FN49’s on Reddit, scowering old forums, and now bothering these guys with a blog. Honestly these blog dudes might be promising, fingers crossed. The goal is to find clips that run great and eject. I have what I think are Portuguese 8mm clips and they eject (fall off literally) but more then have the time I charge the whole clip and ammo into the magazine like a dingdong.
