Every rifle has a story and this is the story of this Italian Model 38 Carcano. We learn where it started and of some if its travels through the markings on the rifle. If these rifles could talk...
Much of the information on this rifle was found in The Model 1891 Carcano Rifle: A Detailed Developmental and Production History by Giovanni Chegia and Alberto Simonelli with Ralph Riccio. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for information on the Carcano series of rifles.

Carcano is a mark of quality in a rifle.

They are quality rifles. My biggest complaint is the safety.

I have had some difficulty getting solid information on Carcano slings. Carcanos imported to Finland seem to have their own sling, differing from Italian slings. I found a reference to German issued Carcanos having Kar-98k slings.

I haven't looked into that much. I would like to get an issued sling for this rifle. I know there are some repros listed as carcano slings. It makes sense that the country using the rifle would use thier own slings.

Hello, interesting video. I've just bought a Carcano M38 cavalry, I am accostumed to WW2 bolt action rifles, but I really struggle to understand the fixed iron sights of the M38... I miss every time even at 50 yds ... Can eomeone enlighten me with the use of Carcano fixed rear sight (V notch)...

@HistoryinFirearms Жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video! A couple things may factor in to your experience in shooting the rifle. Ammo being used, condition of rifle, and your definition of a "miss". Not all ammo is spec'ed to what the rifle was zeroed to, which will change zero. If the bore or sights are worn or damaged this can also change impacts. Are you missing a small target or something akin to a silhouette?

@@HistoryinFirearms Hi thanks, I usually shoot Mosin Nagant, Swiss K31 and Yugoslavian Mauser pretty accurately at 200yds on a C50 target (50cmx50cm) in the black center part (25cmx25cm) and I have no impact with the Carcano at 200 yds, 100 or even 50 yds... I use PPU Partizan ammo (but I also use Partizan ammo in 8x57 mauser and 7.5x55 Swiss). I'm sure it's because of this fixed V notch iron sight. I align the front post with the top of the V notch and Wherever I try to aim (bottom, center or top, left or right of the target, I miss...)

@@user-kg3pf2uw7y Well I would definitely agree that no impacts on a target that size would be a miss and if you are achieving hits with your other rifles I'm thinking we can generally exclude you as the issue 😊 My guess is ammo. I have not had much time behind mine, and it's all been close range, but my rifle was key holeing at about 10m with PPU ammo. I believe thier bullet diameter is slightly off from original specs. So different ammo would be my first suggestion to try and start with shooting at 10-25m and see where it's are.

@@A.Chp-Schweppes Don't know if you've sussed out the issues yet, so I'll try and give a bit of extra insight based off of my Carcano carbine. First thing is that, as stated in the video, the rear sight is a 300 meter zero, however if you put the tip of the front sight at the very bottom of the rear sight, then the point of impact should be where you would usually put the front sight. The second thing is that PPU may or may not be loading 6.5x52 Carcano with the proper diameter projectiles.(?) Since the Carcano rifles usually have a roughly .268 diameter bore instead of the standard .264 diameter of modern 6.5 rifles, I'm just not sure since there are a ton of people online saying that they aren't loaded with the proper bullets. Next time you try to take your Carcano shooting, try the sight trick I mentioned at 25 yards or closer, and if you see signs of the projectile keyholing, I would TRY to get some 6.5x52 from a manufacturer called Steinel. I sadly haven't had a chance to get any through them, but apparently their carcano ammunition is very good. Hope this helps.

Carcanos are A-typical in their sight set up, you are to bury the front sight in the bottom of the V like this "\./" Not like a typical "\|/" Hope that helps! Not sure if this applies to the type 38 with fixed sights.
