Joel couldn’t believe it when in the spring of 2023 he discovered his name was drawn for a Roosevelt elk hunt in the magical forests of Vancouver Island.
This is our favorite hunt to date with the highs, lows and everything in between that make for a great hunt. We’ll always be grateful for the opportunity to chase elusive Roosevelt bulls and can't wait to go back someday.

Not a hunter myself and having very little understanding of the sport I was truly amazed by this video. You showed me a side of hunting I could have never comprehended. I was taken aback by the amount of skill, knowledge, courage, persistence and patience you must have. I appreciated the restraint, gratitude and compassion you showed. You have forever shifted my views on hunting. Thanks for that.

Thanks so much for your comment, this made our day! We're thrilled you've been able to see the bigger picture of what hunting is truly about, you've absolutely nailed it in the wording you used. Thanks for allowing us to share our passion with you! Cheers

It’s very difficult for me to view hunting as a sport….. it’s nothing like other “sports”, it requires a massive amount more skill, patience, discipline, knowledge and practice than any other sport I’m aware of and the best part is no one is keeping score. I hunt exclusively to feed my family and thankfully I’m able to experience the great outdoors in order to do that. Which leads me back to my original comment…. It really tough for me to view hunting (especially bowhunting) as a sport. It’s far more than a sport, it’s a way of life for many people.

@@BoworBustOutdoors I see your point and I didn't choose that word with intention, it was just default terminology I've heard so often. That said, I still think there's a game/sport/hobby like aspect to it if you're not doing it out of necessity to feed yourself/family.

Now that is a great reply. Most people who don’t hunt think we’re just out there shooting anything and everything we see. I feel sorry for them. They have no idea what it’s about. You’re right, it takes a lot of knowledge, patience, proficiency with a bow etc etc. However, sometimes you run across sign of a massive deer. When you start hunting a particular deer, learning his schedule and his territory, that’s when you learn what it’s all about.

I appreciate anytime I see a non-hunter acknowledge those aspects of hunting, which the brothers' video have brought to your attention chain.driven. Unless a vegetarian, perhaps you will join our ranks one day? Meanwhile, please know too that hunting for some of us, though it may seem paradoxical, is a celebration of life; not just our own lives, but the lives of our prey as well. Beyond that, it is a spiritual acknowledgement of the long tenacious journey of life on this planet, all while recognizing our individual mortality.

Joel and James, I hope you don't mind my asking a couple questions: How far was it from the point where you left the blood trail the night before that you found the bull the next day? And, did that second arrow miss? (Flight path looked on-line, but we know how badly even a small twig can deflect an arrow.)
@GetOutdoorsNoExcuses
@GetOutdoorsNoExcuses 5 ай бұрын
The bull was another 100 yards from where we left the night before. The second shot impacted just a couple inches from the first. The sound of that second shot does make us think there was a partial deflection.

I hope you can understand that at the end of the day, this was a hunt for meat. Every ounce of meat was utilized from this incredible animal. Keep in mind that the oldest, most mature bulls yield the most meat from any animal within the elk population, and wildlife biologists and managers all agree killing those particular animals has the least impact on the overall herd. Using that logic, in our minds, being a good meat hunter means a person should hunt for the biggest, oldest bulls that provide the most meat, what you might consider a "trophy". This hunt was in an area that is managed by the BC Ministry of Environment to produce large, old bull elk. Applicants for this hunt have about a 1% chance of successfully getting the tag each year. Considering this is realistically a once in a lifetime opportunity, the decision was made to pass the broken antlered bull and extend the hunt. The idea was to make the most of the experience and the goal was to find an old bull with a full rack. We had over a week set aside to go on this hunt. Considering all those factors, passing up the broken bull (mature but not very old) was a logical decision. Yes this was a hunt different from most., it was also one to make an experience out of. All that considered, hunting for the bull with the biggest antlers needs a different label. I would argue your term "trophy hunt" is unfortunately misguided and is often misused, as in this instance.
@MrGarymuldoon

@@GetOutdoorsNoExcusesof course it wasn’t, you said the beginning of the video if you didn’t get one that’s fine. Did you not watch it lol? And no that’s not how it works. Taking a bull past it’s prime and regressing, done it’s job in the reproductive cycle is what they speak of should be the target or the best animal to take without effecting herds. This 5x6 is not in that category but congrats on the trophy 👍🏼

Time to practice that nock, draw, release in 6 seconds or less not 10+ (like the practice), most animals will give you 3 seconds....They look like this 1.What's that? 2. @GetOutdoorsNoExcuses
@GetOutdoorsNoExcuses 5 ай бұрын
Yes it was really fortunate to have a second shot opportunity. Both shots were low, and the slight downward angle from the shooting position also didn't help. Lessons learned for next time to think a little more about the arrow exit and choose an aiming point accordingly.
