I had a 1999 Toyota Avalon Platinum Edition that my mom bought new. It had almost 300,000 miles on it when it quit. It had a burned intake valve, so it was no longer a safe vehicle to drive. Our 2004 Camry LE was built in Kentucky. It's at 360,000 km, 224,000 miles. Routine maintenance, just a couple of small rust spots on the rear door windows frames (symmetrical on both doors, same spot) after 18 years. @anonymike8280
@anonymike8280 2 жыл бұрын
Too much drama here. A quick search revealed, the same MAF sensor was used in numerous Toyota vehicles, one type in Avalon 1995-96 and Camry through 1998. Another type was used through 2002 in Avalon and other Toyota models. If it was me, I would look for one with an aftermarket Toyota or Denso label on it at the self-service wrecking yard. I found new OEM and Denso MAF sensors on the internet in minutes. I practice what I preach too. Got a Denso purge valve solenoid for my Toyota for about five bucks and it passed the shop diagnostic for smog repairs. Be self-reliant. The state paid for my repairs, of course.

Pull a part type salvage yards are a gold mine for these types of parts. Problem is at least around here, there's guys who spend all day there pulling parts and reselling them on ebay so a part you need may or may not be there and if it's a mechanical part, may be tough to source. OTOH, these MAFs were used in several different Toyotas so it's probably doable.

@anonymike8280 2 жыл бұрын
@@therivergod849 California has a program available in certain counties which pays for the emissions test and puts up a certain amount of money toward repair. They always write it up so you have to pay something above what the state pays but you can negotiate with the shop. When they realized I could do the work myself if need be, they went down from $750 to $250 out of pocket. Their out was, I was going get the intake resonator myself and install it. The intake resonator is a plastic part that connects to the hose between the air box and the engine air intake. It serves no actual function but is supposed to reduce noise. What they did change was the overfill valve, and the evaporative cannister. These are somewhat difficult jobs. I was glad to have someone else to do it for me. Vehicle is a 2001 Toyota Camry LE 4cyl. Runs nice. The original owner always changed the oil on schedule but neglected a lot of other things. I've had to do some work. Air hoses. Four struts. Water pump. Brakes. And new tires of course. When I buy a used car, I want to get my own tires. Just give me money off.

What can happen is you get a leaky injector, which will trigger the 02 sensors into thinking it's too rich-- so then it will dial back the fuel on that bank, which causes everything to run lean. So all you have to do is check your fuel trims, and see if the computer is adding fuel or taking it away. But you can't trust the "lean" designation" -- because it could be the computer making it lean, from the fact that it's actually slightly rich--- just not rich enough to trip the code.......... see, being rich on one cylinder may not trip the code, but it does trigger the computer to make a fuel trim adjustment, which then causes it to now be too LEAN on the whole bank, which will then push it out of spec far enough to now trip a code for what the COMPTUER reaction is causing, when actually the problem is the opposite.

I also did not replace my power steering belt when it wore out last year and I get an additional 3-4 mpg off of that as well! 19 year old car gets 45+ mpg with 430k on it. All original. Interesting post. We have had chronic running lean on both our 2007 and 2008 4-banger Corollas. Code comes back after a long period of time during the winter. I cleaned both MAFs and now our 2008 is working fine. However the code came back on our daughter's 2007. Our mechanic checked for leaks, found none out of desperation changed the MAF. Code still comes back after a few months in cold weather. As an aside both cars have had problems in the cold since new, engine hesitates for a while until it warms up.

Sometimes these vehicles have a really good "default" setting--- and if you just unplug the MAF, all the sudden your car runs great again... Maybe it won't do as well in extreme cold or extreme altitude.. but for a general default preset parameter, it could run well most of the time, if you just unplug it. (Now some brands are the opposite though -- and if you unplug it, it may not run well at all-- it just depends on the manufacturer and how they designed it that year; Some will want the default to be more reliable, while others will do whatever pollutes the least, even if that means that it's going to leave you stranded on the side of the road.)

Would you have the info on actually going into the sensor and calibrating it to the exact Toyota specs for that particular vehicle? Or would another older Toyota map sensor work for that year besides an Avalon? Anyway Scotty I'm glad you do what you do and have answered many of my questions regarding Toyotas. We have three Toyotas and one Lexus. Until the American car companies pull their heads out of their rear-ends and start thinking of the consumer and not "just their bottom line" I'm buying only Japanese!!!
