This made me cry... And I could barely blink... Can anyone translate this? I am just finding out this is the culture my ancestors left behind to come to America. My ancestry DNA came back being mostly from this region and my skin tone/appearance.. I grew up in Miami where nobody ever looked like me, not even other white people.. So much makes sense to me now. I can honestly feel it in my soul..
@miss-ck3xf
@miss-ck3xf 2 жыл бұрын
On a side note for all the Sami people reading this.. My grandfather passed when my dad was 16 so I never got to meet him. Documents show he came to America from Sweden with my grandma.. My dad would NEVER tell me where we were from and always just said "you are American"... The fondest/ most important memories he has shared with me of his father was fishing / ice fishing in Buffalo New York where my dad was born, and hunting his first deer when he was a teenager - he told me he cried after his dad made him kill it. We had the deer skin for years, and I had no idea what it meant. I think he still has it. It's cathartic, but bittersweet to find out our lost cultural identity and honor the heritage that was basically stolen by genocide. It's really heartbreaking, especially around Christmas time now that I understand who the Sami are and how they were murdered and robbed of their land/religion/culture. I always felt so lost and like I was truly different from everybody growing up, and couldn't understand why I looked the way I did. I never even heard of Sami people until last year until I was 30 years old.. I wish more people knew about Sami. It's my mission now to teach people about it, especially having grown up in Miami where we are so culturally diverse. It's ironic that nobody seems to care about my lost culture.

Sea sámi joiks (at least those recorded in kåfjord) tended to have words, and I think eastern joiks also tended to tell stories more than the north sámi joiks. However, I was mostly thinking of contemporary joiks. Almost all famous contemporary or modern joiks got words in them, including Sámi eatnan duoddariid, Daniels joik, Golle maže and eatni nieida. Many traditional joiks where of course completely without words, but today I feel like saying that joiks generally don't have words is a bit incorrect. Saying that most have words was also not completely correct, should have specified "contemporary"

There's a bit of a difference between being Finnish and being Sami. Sami is a minority in the northern parts of the country, and while they are Finnish in the sense that they live in Finland (or Sweden/Norway respectively for their populations), as far as I'm aware many of them wouldn't call themselves "Finnish people", but Sami people.

Quick fact check. Humans have been in Scandinavia for close to 12,000 years, the Sami language-ethnicity has been there for maybe 4,000-5,000 years. There's nothing wrong with that Sami guy to be proud of his heritage, but he has been lied to by western scholars. They have been there for just as long as Germanic peoples; such as Swedes. Sami are nothing special genetically, they had just been isolated from mainstream Europe up until recent times. Just because Sami are less developed than neighboring ethnic groups, doesn't mean they're more "ancient"(no one is more ancient than another).

joe joesph "Humans" being in Scandinavia doesn't mean "cultures" being in Scandinavia "for close to 12,000 years". So yes, Samis are one of the most ancient cultures. And FYI, there are proofs that Samis have existed since the stone age.
@joejoesph222
@joejoesph222 8 жыл бұрын
+helenejoncour There's prove in ancient DNA Saami have not been in Scandinavia since the Stone age. For a population in Eurasia(big chunk of land, no place to hide) to stay isolated since the Stone age is impossible and there isn't a single people like that in Eurasia. Saami are not distinct from nearby Europeans. They have the same Stone age roots as all their neighbors. They're mostly Mesolithic North European, with significant West Asian and Siberian ancestry. We know this because of Ancient DNA. The Saami language and identity is younger than the Stone age(same is true for all languages and ethnic groups). The Saami-ethnic group didn't form and settle the region they live today till 4,000 years ago or later. A date that old for the formation of an ethnic group is hard to find in the World. Saami have developed in the region they live in the Pre-Historic era like all their neighbors(Historic era starts 1,000-1,500 yo for East and North Europe).
@e.e.1121
@e.e.1121 5 жыл бұрын
The definition of "indigenous peoples" according to the European Union is an ethnic group of people who are not the ruling party of a country, but have been there just as long as the ruling party. This makes Saami indigenous to northern Europe. The Saami and the Finns came to the land at the same time, and then separated as time went by. The Saami languages also belong to the Finno-Ugric language family. As far as calling them less developed, that is incredibly insulting. What in the world ever led you to believe that the Saami are less developed?? They're just like normal people, but with different traditions.

So, just because someone on the internet - completely unrelated to this video - called him Native American, even though everything in the actual video & description says he is Saami, you assume and get offended for "appropriating your culture"? This video has nothing at all to do with Native American Indians, so your comments & assumptions are at the wrong people - you should be offended with whoever called him Native American when he's Saami. Go get angry at them and tell them to learn the difference, especially since Finland is not even on the same continent as the US, lol.
