To answer a lot of questions, I'm using the drawing board to explain what I'm trying to accomplish with my 2 greenhouses and the overall design process. After seeing it drawn out, this should help you understand exactly what is going on, and maybe give you some ideas that could be used to build and operate your own greenhouse. Its a little longer video than usual, cuz I really tried to explain everything.

@DailyPrepper Thank you. The pollination is resolved by manual pollination, or by planting parthenocarpic varieties that don't require pollination. Tomatoes and peppers are no problem, since they are almost self-pollinating. Just remember, the bigger they are, the more work involved. But the harvest should be bigger as well. ;-)

@djs6576 Thx. That sounds like a good idea. I checked the heat radiating from the stack pipe last night, didn't seem to be much of an issue going thru the wood roof. I do have a wide metal collar on it, but a little foil covering some of the wood surfaces might not hurt.

@mediamaker2000 Soil temps would be about like you'd expect, much lower along the perimeter, especially the north side in the winter. I have black plastic right now helping to heat the ground somewhat. The white plastic is an iffy deal, since it reflects so much light. Plant leaves aren't designed to receive light from the lower side. If you haven't made your mini hoop yet, I'll show you how I'd do it in the next video.

@Alprofight Yes, I found one online that will bend 1 1/4 EMT. It takes a little bit of effort, but I 've been able to get a fairly consistent bend for my side posts. The smaller ones for 3/4 and 1 inch are much easier to work with. Good idea to get it right the first time on your GH. Especially dealing with your weather. I'd like to see it when you finish.

@KingRyltar The second layer of poly will be installed in the next couple of weeks, hopefully. Along with the inflation blower. This is 4 yr poly that was put on last Nov, not quite a year old. If I buy IR/AC, I'll pull this off, and use it for the outer layer. Otherwise, I'll go right on top of it. Thx.

@horticultureandhomes 2 cents? I place a lot more value than that on your opinion. I agree, in theory the slope sounds good. It should assist me some in the heating process. But part of the reason for the additional height was to allow for room to place fans that wouldnt be in the way, nor blowing directly on the plants. I have 3 fans in the small GH and they are making a big difference. I'm still learning. ;-)

@djs6576 Soil temp is ok with the white bags/buckets. If they were black right now, it might be a problem. Mid-winter, black pots would prob be an asset. Nothing at all wrong with using a GH simply to extend the seasons. Its all about making the most of what you have. Plenty of folks have built them from scrap windows and doors. Hope you get one planned out. :-)

@eye4quality Sounds like I'd have one heck of a mess ! LOL I've read about the process a little bit, a heat sink I think is what its called. From what I understand, the trench needs to go the entire length of the GH. And filling it would require a very large amount of manure, way more than I have access too. I could see that possibly working on a smaller scale though. ;-)
@KingRyltar
@KingRyltar 13 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, and Bro...I know it would be a pain in the Butt, however a way to cut down on heat lose in the winter, would be to double wall the green house. Costly yes, Air wall between 2 layers of plastic, fan keeping the inner pocket filled up. Just a thought for you, when the time comes round, when you have to change out the current plastic sheeting you are using. We know it doesn't last forever, we can only wish, or hope for long life with it. Peace bro.

Winter time cooling down time of the year trying to maintain higher temps to grow can be difficult when considering the cost & time. What wound happen if you were to dig a 6' to 8' deep basement by 12' wide by how ever long you want. Cinder block or wood posts heavy screen, or fencing, with straw packed in between the metal mesh (screen/fence), and the dirt around the sides. Then fill with cow manure while laying out aeration tubes. Put planks across top, and it should maintain 70 degrees...

Bro, looking great! I do hope you are planning on a bunch of tomato sauce, homemade ketchup, etc.,. Try growing some Chinese cabbage for Kim chi (yummy). Grow tons during the spring, summer and fall, then preserve, can, dry, freeze, etc.,. You are on the way to food freedom. Winter for fresh at hand crops, but lots of cool weather choices, to keep your loses down, if mother nature shits on your parade.

It would be interesting to know what the soil temperature is of the soil beneath the GH in both the summer and the winter. I wonder how much it affects the temps in the GH overall. I also wondered if you covered the floor with black in the winter and white ( they make plastic black on one side and white on the other) and you reversed it for summer if that would help as well as insulation below the floor plastic. Never thought of the grade via circulation! I can't wait to see the next vid! TY!

First I want to tell you how much I've learned from your videos and appreciate the detail you provide and are willing to share. Thank you!! I have a question for you... we purchased our first greenhouse and hope to start construction this weekend. A BIG concern we have-groundhogs. We are in a wooded area and can't seem to get rid of them- they're worse than deer! Do you have a problem with them? If so, what steps do you take to ensure they don't either dig in or at the poly? Any suggestions?
@BoondockFarms

think you would benefit from a rocket mass heater. could run your exhaust pipes underground and use that for the mass. would probably take two for the size, but would use less than 1/4 the amount of wood, and give you much more even heat. look em up sometime. paul wheaton is the foremost expert on them. he's on here as paulwheaton12 i think. excellent looking greenhouse! feller you got it growin' on!
