I think we are too judgmental of Chaka. To me, between Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle, and Aretha Franklin, there are no other vocalists in their class. And Chaka has made a remarkable recovery from things that happened in her youth that I applaud her for. She has made strides in transforming her life. Maybe spiritually she's not where others want her to be, but I feel that she will get there when God says so, not man. We don't know her struggles and her journey. Only she knows that.

Still my favorite singer of all time❣️This reminded of her song, Through the fire, as she ascends into the high notes. I had to listen as she began to build, I know Chaka, she tells the story with feeling as she croons through the low parts and then ascends into the higher parts with intensity and it brought a smile to my face, as she moved around, and where we expected a run, she kept it straight, her version. And I loved it still! She remains blessed to sing his glory! I'm so glad to see her make a change from R&B and I pray she has already surrendered to God! I've heard her talk about God she believes in before so I assume that is who she's talking about,.. why she said"higher power", is baffling.

When Rufus debuted in the 70s NO OTHER FEMALE was singing funk; only men. Chaka's contributions to R&B music have never been duplicated! NO ONE has done what Chaka did; NO female has duplicated Chaka's work as a 'funk-meister'! 😊 We LOVE her! ☺ Re: Gospel? We are all a work in progress. Chaka's selection ("Goin' up Yonder") at Aretha's funeral (even though she didn't know the words! 😄) showed progress! Chaka appears 2-B growing in her relationship with God. 😇 Praise be to The Almighty!

Actually Patti Labelle ,Betty Davis & Joyce Kennedy was & even Aretha had her forays into funk!!! But Chaka was Queen of it !!!

@@tyjahkhan7708 : IDK Betty Davis and Joyce Kennedy, but I think of Funk being at it's height in the 70s, and never associate Patti & Aretha with it --- but they could sing Rock. I'm no expert, but 70s bands --- Parlaiment, EW&F, Cameo, Bootsy, etc., maybe starting w/ Sly Stone (a mixture of rock, R&B, EVERYTHING, really! 😊), and including Rufus is when Funk became a "category," I thought. Again, I'm no expert, but Chaka was the only prominent chick-singer among all those male funk-meisters, I think.

Golden Silence, aka Goldie Love What do you think “Lady Marmalade” & “Rock Steady” was??? Lol!!! Chaka definitely changed how women(especially black women) approached their songs & inspired them to choose more diverse material & how to fuse different genres together!!! She also modernized soul music by fusing it with different genres!!! Chaka was way ahead of her time with her musical genius!!! But you can’t negate other black female contributions to funk;In fact Aretha’s “Baby I Love You” was extremely funky for the time in 1968!!!

U'll see what I mean: James Brown, Ohio Players, Kool & the Gang, The Gap Band, The Isley Brothers, The Barkays ...it's a different category of soul music --- different from what Patty, Aretha & Gladys sung. Google it --- U'll see what I mean. Also notice that besides Sly's Family Stone, (& later, Prince's Revolution, both, which featured female voices) Chaka is the only girl listed among the Funk-sters! Check it out...😁

OK, I'll give U that one! 😊 I never thought of Aretha, or Patti as funkmeisters, though --- and I'm DEFINITELY not negating their contributions to Soul music, no way! Perhaps Rufus gave Chaka her Funk credentials? IDK! 😁 But also, Chaka sung like a horn (think her dad was a horn player?), so she infused R&B & Funk music w/Jazz vocals in a way that not even Natalie Cole did it! Chaka never sung Gospel licks, like The Emotions (for example)... she sung like a horn --- like the Clark Sisters (whom she inspired)! All of these women are great contributors to Soul Music, mind you, but NOBODY did it exactly the way Chaka did it, nor has anyone ever duplicated the combination of what she did, musically. Nobody. I stand my ground on this assertion! 😄 I'm a Singer who has studied popular Soul Singers my whole life! I'm telling U: NOBODY has ever duplicated what Chaka did. Nobody. Those other ladies have been copied, or mirrored; but, not Chaka.

@TheCmelmoneyman Well, she may not be a soprano like Karen, but she is a contralto with the ability to sing soprano with no problem! As you can hear her sing her FACE OFF! in FULL Voice! Which gives her the ability to over power anyone on stage with her, even Karen singing her own song...Not saying loud is better, but Chaka's highs are BEYOND extraordinary.

Other than her “higher power” comment this performance was perfect and so moving. You can feel the Holy Spirit. This version is pure Chaka. I actually prefer this version over most of Karen’s version (due to all the unnecessary runs). But I do think Karen’s version on her album tops all versions I’ve heard.

@bandaka100, you say you didn't feel the annointing. Ok, maybe this song wasn't meant to move you at this particular time. There have been times when Karen Clark Sheard has moved my soul, and others around me were unamused. There have also been times where someone would go on and on about the annointing in one of her performances, and I would be unmoved. The annointing breaks the yoke, but maybe the annointing here was for someone else's yoke. It doesn't mean she's not annointed. It just wasn't

Whether Chaka or Karen I just like the message behind that song... Praise Lord! However the praise team needs practice, they were all over the place although there was a choir conductor... It made me miss Richard Smallwood and Vision sound who originally sing in the original background...

Ms. Khan comes from a place of musicology that the voice is used as a horn or becomes one with the horn!! so, what is considered screaming is suppose to mimic the screaching that you hear when a saxsaphone (sp) hits a high note. sometimes this is done well and sounds well but other times it doesn't. most gospel artist do this w/o full knowledge of what they are doing they are just following someone which is ok. what i don't like is she doesn't say lord take me!! and speach about higher power

Well, one (Shaka )appeals to some, and the other, Shaka's sister in Light (Karen) resonates with the rest...God gave them both to us to get the message to as many as possible...makes sense to me...they are equal in their power to touch people, maybe just not the same ones...covering double spiritual demographics if you will...that's what I call divine design. i wish people would stop always trying to compare singers and say who is better chaka and karen are both beats in the game but the same with all singers you cant compare or say who's best because everybody has different styles and specialty.Some might like chaka better or karen better. but my question to the people who talk about the singers and bring out their bad... can you do it any better?

@tsFK5, clearly, this song is being sung to God, and there is no way of indicating whether she was singing from her heart or for the sake of artistry, unless we sit and ask her for ourselves. Until then, let's not assume, because assuming causes issues. She was simply singing out of worship and gratitude... Let's just meditate on the heart and message of the song and not dissect where you think her intent was. Let's love.

@bandaka100 Trouble with giving certain singers the anointing "pass" is that most talk about it only when they when they hear a singer who is known to do secular music singing Gospel. What happens when it's another Gospel singer singing the same song? Does it only apply to strictly Gospel singers? If so, then doesn't it just come down to who's version you preferred? There are many Gospel singers who don't have the so-called "anointing" who have sung for years.

@curt2005 She is not a soprano like Karen and therefore should use a key that will show off her sultry low/mid range, where she can then work up to the brassy high notes. they r both incredible singers in their own rights.
