The work of sculptor Tom O’Connell is inspired by mythology and the natural stone and driftwood surrounding him in west Clare.
Operating from an isolated workshop along the road from Liscannor to Doolin, on the west coast of County Clare, stone carver Tom O’Connell takes inspiration from his surroundings, working in granite, marble and limestone.
Tom has no formal training in his chosen art form but taught himself how to use the appropriate tools to carve stone. Tom’s style is primitive, and he explains one of his limestone pieces, a three faced head depicting joy, sorrow and misery.
He has taken inspiration from Greek and Aztec mythology the Hopi Native American tribe and the poems of William Shakespeare.
Tom explains the genesis of some of his other sculptures, a skull, a mermaid and the sea god Neptune. Simple sculptures of a foot and leg evolved naturally from a suitably shaped stone.
I find these pieces and then add my own imagination onto them to improve them.
While Tom has never been to an art gallery or a museum, he has seen pieces of sculpture on private property. His work can sell from £10 - £40 and he has successfully sold pieces to people in Dublin as well as further afield in Europe, Canada and the United States of America.
This episode of ‘Tangents’ was broadcast on 16 April 1973. The reporter is Cathal O’Shannon. A miscellany of events, entertainment, opinions and personalities, ‘Tangents’ was first aired on Monday 25 September 1972 and ran until 1974.

Hes a breath of fresh air. After been to art school in Dublin and the BS you have to put up with from the system. This guy proves you dont need to go to a stuck up, pretentious art school to become an artist

A real, raw naturally talented artist, one of those very rare people that you come across one or two times in a lifetime if you are very lucky and you know immediately that you have struck gold. I hope that this man is still around and meaning a living from his work, I would love to see and buy some of his art

Might be inspired by the 4 faced liar (Shandon clock tower, where the clock faces on each side of the tower failed to even agree with each other, not to mind the actual time) in Cork.

Tom O’Connell On The Moor, I really like what this man has done, I love his style, I like his place of work, I like his choice of stone material. I hope that this man is still working on his art. My only complaint is the amount that he charges for his masterpieces £10- to £40 per piece, this is stealing from the man, even back in 1973. I would be very grateful if someone could give me some updates on this artist, I would love to buy some of his art, direct from Tom O’Connell. As that other great genius, Phil Lynott would shout to the crowd from the stage in the middle of a Thin Lizzy rocking concert, Are You Out There Are You Out There, Please Let me know that you are out there Tom O’Connell

I knew some great stone carvers in glossop in the uk, you only need to venture into the cemetery and look at the old head stones, most of that talent has gone, the best stone carvers in the UK are Mather and eliss in Manchester, still going to this day, but fair play to this fella, not easy to keep going when its cold and wet.

Self taught implies that a person has not done formal schooling or training, as part of any institution or organisation. Obviously, he will be researching, studying and investigating in his own way and time. So, yes, he is self taught.
