When I was 15, I read this book on my own. And i absolutely loved it. I related to Gene in such a painful way, especially in his unhealthy sense of rivalry. I found the descriptions vivid and each chapter end with an emotional gut punch. So when I saw that many people disliked the book I was confused. It had quickly become one of my favorites.
@AnnoyingNewsletters

Same. I found it on my own at the library. And even then I had the opinion of Gene, why don't you just pull your head out of your ass and carpe the f@cking diem like your friend? When it came time to do a book report later, I chose this one because I'd already read it, and because I had this feeling that no one else in my class would even consider this book. It stuck with me enough that I woke up thinking about it today and was hella glad that Thug Notes had covered it.

this may be a few years late, but a while back, I got so bored by this book in english class, that I decided to write my paper on the most outlandish topic that I could to find any enjoyment on it. It went something like this. The thesis was that Gene and Finny weren't gay, but instead the same person, much like Tyler Durden and the other guy in Fight Club. Gene created Finny so that he could be cool, so he could be a self-supporting badass, but as he grows up and is forced to face the world (he is in a preperatory school, about to enlist in the army, after all), he needs to get rid of this imaginary friend. He tries to get rid of it as early as possible, but he still needs Finny to get through his life, so Finny comes back, and this is when Finny is training Gene to become a distance runner. Now Gene is more self-supporting, and Finny is merely around to help him just a while longer. Finally, there is the trial, Gene thinking about what he had done. Finally, Gene goes into the army, and Finny is no longer needed, and dies. and now I believe it to be true.

The issue with that is, other characters see him clearly addressing him directly throughout the book, and alongside this it's been said that Finny specifically has one a lot of sporting awards from the school, and that'd simply be impossible if Finny was a figment of Gene's imagination. But hey, it's not actually a bad theory.
@oregano8729

that’s a really good view of the story honestly, just because of how often gene says he is only an extension of phineas, as if they are the same person. i think in a metaphorical way you’re right.

Wisecrack, it touched me when I read it in high school. In middle age I wanted to recapture that experience of East coast prep school, the comforting network of adults in charge, and how painful things get for teenagers. Tonight it came to mind again. That's why I'm here. You opened the hood and pointed out how it all works. Now I really want to read it again!

Timefliesbye Actually, what he touches on but doesn't fully explain is that the second time Finny breaks his leg, a chunk of marrow gets loose in his bloodstream and makes its way to his heart. Which, anyone in the medical field can tell you, leads to cardiac arrest.

I loved the book. I cried! What I got from it wasn't about envy, but how we cause pain to those we love, oftentimes for no real reason. Much like the war that was going on. So many people suffering, and for what? Why would you be told to hate, by those 'fat, rich old men' that instigate wars. All I kept thinking about was "Why did he do that?? Why??" (referring to Gene causing Phineas to fall from the tree). And a lot of times, we don't truly know why we do things.

In an interview in 1987, John Knowles said this on the matter of their sexualities: "Freud said any strong relationship between two men contains a homoerotic element. If so in this case, both characters are totally unaware of it. It would have changed everything, it wouldn't have been the same story. In that time and place, my characters would have behaved totally differently... If there had been homoeroticism between Phineas and Gene, I would have put it in the book, I assure you. It simply wasn't there." -Found in the afterword by David Levithan.
