The TCS London Marathon 2022 is coming up... and, as a serious runner trying to get entry into the London Marathon, the Good for Age qualify standard doesn't work if you're not a UK resident. Listen to a Serious Runner as he vents about the process of guaranteed entry into the London Marathon (or lack thereof) and what other options are available, such as entering the lottery like a hobby jogger or purchasing a marathon tour package.
And for the record, I did try to get Mo Farah to cameo in this video, but was unsuccessful. (Mo, if you watch this and change your mind, let me know and we can release a George Lucas-style Special Edition... only the changes will actually make things better)

I live 10 miles from the Start Line of the London Marathon. I tried EVERY year from 2010 to 2022 to get through the ballot. ANd was rejected EVERY time. Now in 2023 I've relented and bought a charity place. For £2500! It's as bad to my soul as paying to run a 10k! Incidentally, I had to buy places through a tour company for NYC and Chicago! 😂😂

This is my fourth year in a row trying to get in and not making it through the lottery. It's maddening when you've run a fast enough qualifier, but you're American so can't use it! This year will also be my 8th attempt at the NYC Marathon lottery...

My sympathies. I've failed to get a ballot place twice now. And, at my age (71!), I haven't got much longer to cover the distance. I am serious here: the organisers should prioritise inexperienced old farts . We need the acclaim while we can still get it.

Good news for men to be accepted just ask your agent (as a serious runner I assume you have one?) to contact the organisers with evidence of you sub 2.18.00 or for a half sub 1.05.00 and you will be accepted. Thanks for the great videos.

Follow my footsteps: I didn’t start running until I was 58, but I tried my first marathon when I was 68 on kind of a dare from my recently acquired coach. My goal was just to finish the damn thing but being so very old (albeit serious) I BQ’d. So after all the Covid cancelations and postponements I finally got to run Boston last October and being even more ancient (70) I re-qualified there for next month and ‘23. Being Serious and Old is a good combination if you have that hankering. And I have to say, it was pretty damn Epic, too. Martha

I'm just going to irritate the f* out of "serious runners" then. As a slug (or turtle with only 3 legs), I've done NY 2x, London once, and this coming September, Berlin too. I got London via a tour operator and have done a total of only 4 marathons ever including one that was meant to be part of my training for my last NY. I don't even know if I'm good enough to be considered a "hobby jogger". Don't care. I want to do London and NY again someday even if I go through a tour operator again. Hey, if you really were that "serious", you'd pony up the $ too (see how that goes?).

Funny AF, as usual. Love the surprise ending (though given away by all the early spoilers in comments). As for Marathon Tours, at least a fancy, epic hotel is included in the cost. So if I’m a Serious Runner who BQ’d the honest, serious way, am I serious enough for it not to count if I have to pay my way into the Majors that don’t have guaranteed good-for-age time slots? Only the OG Serious Runner can answer this very serious question on which my self esteem hinges. 🤔🤩 Martha

As a "hobby runner" I could probably run the London Marathon faster than half of those running in costumes for charity, but that's what the event has become. Just watch the BBC coverage of it every year: "Yeah, I can see you're an 18-stone pie muncher with no hope of finishing in under 7 hours, but you're raising 20p for some starving Africans (for that read the charity's annual away trip to Faro) so, yeah, you're amazing". So don't worry about it. London isn't all it's cracked up to be anyway.
