Lovely to see you again, Giles, out on another camp. I've actually managed to get to see this one soon after it was posted, this time. I'm always up early working on the computer at six on a Sunday, but work is generally quiet at that time and so I can fill in the gaps with videos. Thank you once again for taking the time to record and share your experiences. I never tire of seeing your camp set-ups, woodland wanderings, and campfire cooking. Yes, the shorter days are upon us, and the temperature is dropping. I know what you mean about the difficulties of having less daytime at this time of year. Early in the year I went out, I think it was February, and the hours of daylight were outnumbered by the darkess by two to one, so I didn't get to do a lot of what I'd hoped; the light just went and before I knew it it was getting dark again and I had to start thinking about settling down for the night. I had a book to read so I was prepared for the hours of darkness. I must note your interesting use of the verb 'wazz'. In your dialect it seems to mean to 'put' or 'add', though I've only heard it used in a different context, in phrases such as, "I'll just nip for a quick wazz." :) It's great to see you getting out and about reasonably regularly, it really does help me when I'm getting cravings and urges to get out myself, while at the same time inspiring me and encouraging me to plan my next one. By the way, my new sheepskin arrived yesterday, as a birthday present from my partner. It's quite a shaggy, black, icelandic one, lovely and warm. It will be replacing my old synthetic roll-up mat. Is that a new belt-pouch you have?It looks very handy. I've recently been making cotton drawstring-bags made out of old trousers, using an old-school antique hand-operated Singer sewing machine. It's very quick and convenient to use, and it seems so much sturdier than the modern plastic ones. I even had to look hard to find non-synthetic thread for it! Polyester really has taken over! Anyway I'll post this comment now, it's taken me four hours to watch the video and then write the comment, in between my work obligations. Thanks again for sharing, very much appreciated, as always. I am so glad you mentioned the short days and long nights as it's so difficult to get out and indeed everyone in the UK and other northern countries must all be thinking as such. So, I do commend you and also envy you at the same time and say bravo Old Chap for getting out and fighting the good fight. Apologies for my tardy reply, but better late than never. I must admit, I have been distracted by a Young Unicyclist called Ed Pratt who got me binge viewing his around the World trip plus, a couple of spy TV serials and you find yourself in arrears with your favourite subscription channels. YES, I saw it and know what you're talking about with the low but above daytime freezing temperatures, the wet, damp and greyness of it all and yet, you get out there and never fail to impress with your simple old school system that works for you a treat. Keep doing what you are doing for as long as it works for you.

What a treat to wake up to another great video from you Giles! Looks like you had a wet and muddy start there, winter feels just around the corner doesn't it? Impressed how you vaulted up onto that trig point, especially with a full pack! Perhaps I'll try that in a future video for comparison, which will likely be a lot less dignified. Your shelter looked very homely, especially during those shots in the rain. Have you ever experimented with one of those self feeding fire setups, where the logs get fed in automatically? Perhaps that's difficult to do when you're trying to keep the fire small / contained (and of course safe as it's so close to where you're sleeping!). I think the basic premise is a sort of ramp either side of the fire, with a few logs lined up, the idea being that when the one on the bottom burns the next one up in the queue rolls down. There's a few videos on youtube explaining it better than I can here!

👍👍👍 Good Morning Giles .. As usual, you did not disappoint 😊. Yep, it's getting colder and wetter now with dry detritus more difficult to forage. My forest is extremely wet with not too much 'stuff' lying around (the Swiss are pretty efficient in keeping their forests clean .. as with much else 😁). I've built up a small stock of balcony-dried 'forage' that comes in handy. Best time for forage is after the wood cutters have been doing a 'tree cull'. They're pretty accommodating with cutting me some nice bits which I can then dissect further. There is currently a wind fallen tree on one of my Mutt-Walk Routes, partially blocking the path and which I have been eyeing for some time .. waiting for it to self-dry. However, with the wet and cold now in place, I'll have to now get out and save some of it from freezing 😏. The sound of Titanium as with Aluminium and Stainless Steel .. each with it's own unique Resonance. Your Titan Pot seems to be doing fine. Watching your cook-up has me feeling peckish. Time to get the Malti-Poo out on her morning constitutional .. she is starting to give me 'the look'. Thereafter the Sunday 'Brunch' .. she has her chair at the table for her 'titbits'. Very well behaved she is .. no snatching or any such barbarism. A nice share my friend .. am looking forward to the next. Take care .. Tommy

Mate! You need either one of those 'Onesies' one piece warm jumpsuits to sleepin or get a dog! The Aborigines used to gauge how cold it was by how many dogs they'd need to sleep with. A 3 dog night was a cold one! I've still to watch you caught in the rain with that set up. I think you'd be ok unless there was a major windshift. As always, enjoyed the show.

I do not mind returning to a favorite site or to using a favorite and functional camp setup! You found some new camera angles to use this time and they were effective.

Another fine adventure my new friend! And I appreciated the video focus on your shelter set up. I had a very good idea how you set it all up from previous videos, but in this episode I get better picture of your ground cloth, how high you set your ridge line on the tree, etc I'm curious though, you film with white light and that light really does light up your camp site, yet you use a red light on your head lamp. Why the difference? As I told you before I'm my last comment, I do model my camping after your "style" pretty closely. I use an 8x8 tarp and I'm not dedicated to natural fibers but I set it up in plow point as you do. I have a caribou hide instead of sheep, I have the same gaiters. But probably most importantly: you are vegetarian, I'm strict carnivore. So our cook pots are a bit different as well. Will you need to give up your camping in the winter? I don't see how you can tolerate much colder temps with half a wool blanket. English weather is pretty similar to ours in Ohio. I like camping in frigid temps. No bugs! Thanks for all you do!

This time of year we get a lot of rain and mud on paths and bridal ways , so it's important to have some good boots and walking sticks to help stop the slip slide and fall over like sometimes do. Ha Ha . Giles .

I'm amazed at how little water you seem to carry - I'd need 2-3 litres I guess. Also that you light fires (small ones I know) and never seem to attract the attention of angry landowners - what's the secret?

Giles, maybe a short hike, but I enjoyed this video a lot. I love the sound of rain on a tent, especially when I’m sleeping. Yeah, I know it can be a pain packing up wet/damp equipment. Your dinner 🍛 looked really good. Noticed that you were wearing a pouch on your waist. Is that a new piece of equipment? Just curious. I have some 1/4” hemp rope and I’m going to put a eye splice in one end and try to make a ridge line like yours. What size is the zeltbahn you use? The Russian one I have is about 5’6” square. Congrats on another great video Giles. Did you need to get up in the night to saw more logs? I intend to join a walking group tomorrow, for a 12-mile hike. No camping planned as yet though. Seasonal celebrations are almost upon us. I shall be singing in three events this Christmas. After that, I'll be spending time with family and friends. Nice overnighter Giles, You'll have to start packing some kind of extra thermal gear soon if you are going to camp through the winter, it could be a cold one. The idea of using natural materials is more appealing to me as I get older. I was camping in my hot tent made from sil nylon recently, and it really was a bit like being inside a plastic bag:) Take care and all the best Sandy

This was a great watch sir! I really like that simple shelter style! It suits that tarp well, especially when you pull out the sides like you do. Hey! I was wondering… How do you get on with so little water. If I’m really hiking like you do, i need at least 3liters just for drinking and then another one or two for cooking. I’ve just always been impressed at how little water you carry. Great stuff Giles!! Tganks again!! NQU

Once it starts getting cold i always end up using the two titanium bottles i have as hot water bottles, really makes a difference, bonus i don't have to wait so long for the water to boil in the morning for my endless cuppas, lol.

Hello Giles. On the sleeping front. Did you know that you can get Merino sleeping bags (not knitted but more of a "sheepskin bag") They're on sale here in Poland and probably elsewhere as well. Not cheap and am unsure of the weight but I reckon one would not come out to much more than your current sheepskin plus meagre covering (when you use one at all). I can send you a link if you like. Not cheap, but a vast improvement in warmth and no synthetics in sight.

Sunday supplemented with Giles on a hike, what's not to like. Was the trig point moving as you climbed it Giles? or was that an illusion caused by the camera moving in the wind? Or perhaps I'm just going a little mad.

Just curious, Why don't you use a wool blanket more often when you're out camping? You wouldn't have to wake up every hour to tend the fire then because wool blankets keep you warm even when it's pretty cold.

Just curious, but have you ever tried the truckers hitch for tying off your ridge line? Works well for me!
