A Short History of the Quill Pen

A film exploring the development of the quill pen, from its earliest known depiction to the birth of the fountain pen. Illustrated by objects held in the Museum of Writing, the film also demonstrates how to cut a quill. This is the first in a series of films focusing on different methods of writing.

My father taught me in the 1960s how to make a quil pen. This was to explain why his pocket knife was called a pen knife. I have passed this knowledge down to my children. I even showed my son's 4th grade class how to make them. They each got their own to take home. ❤

I look forward to more about the development of pens. You have a wonderful speaking voice and artistic skill with a knife. Have you ever seen a small leather cloth in the shape and size of a Promethea moth and hand painted? I was told it dates pre 1900 and was used to wipe a quill pen nib. Kathy 1- 2019

It is very sad this knowledge will pass away in time. Our young do not know cursive any longer. But instead taught to use their thumbs on tablets & cellphones.... Here in America that is.
