In this weeks video I talk about a very simple yet often overlooked activity which is for me, one of the most important skills to master in landscape photography. It's time consuming, sometimes boring and requires a lot of effort but it will without question enhance the quality of your landscape shots and increase your odds of success whilst out in the field. With this method the process of capturing some images can start months if not years beforehand. Any ideas what I'm talking about? I'm not going to give it away here - watch to find out! Thanks very much for watching and if you have not yet subscribed please consider giving me a helping hand by hitting that button below. Cheers :-)

I enjoyed your video James. I like the way you describe the details of the scene that catch your eye. At the end you mentioned how the lighting on the mill this time of day (and/or year) makes it work...and how another time of day/year the lighting wouldn’t be as good. I wish you could elaborate on that idea. Maybe in another video? Thanks for a great video.
@JamesBrewphoto
@JamesBrewphoto 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark! With regards to the lighting, the valley that the ruins sit in faces east. So it favours morning shooting at all times of year. During the summer months the sunrises behind the hills on the north side of the valley and by the time the sun crests those hills, its harsh. During the winter the opposite happens with the south side of the valley. So the time to shoot is when the sun is rising in alignment with the valley 👍

Point convincingly made for this genre, James. Impressive images. “Log” looked more like man-made beam, unless I missed it. Principle extends to situational street photography (in particular where there is juxtaposition of people w/fixed object like poster). Much can also be said for going out “on empty” and making the most of whatever you find. There are good (and bad) images to be found everywhere. Cheers!
@JamesBrewphoto
@JamesBrewphoto 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul. Yeah I think it was a fence post of some sort. The going out on empty approach has never worked for me personally but I think it comes down to personality, expectations and photography style. I'm a planner by nature - which does increase the odds for success but can also lead to going out less overall. So there are pros and cons to my style for sure 👍

Leave the log James. It makes it look real. I noticed it before you mentioned it and asked myself the same question and concluded that since it was a natural phenomenon, leave it. What is the age of that ruin?

Hi James, I think the mines date back to the 1800's - so reasonably old. At their prime they were pretty huge from what I know about them

That shot of the mill and the waterfall is amazing. It’s pretty much everything you could want in a landscape shot. Great job. By the way, I’m looking for a new pair of rubber boots !! Lol. What brand are yours ? Thanks for sharing..

Thanks very much Joseph - I received the boots as a Christmas present and they don't seem to have a clear brand name on them, so I'm not sure. Key thing with boots is 1. Good grip, 2. Good warm lining inside 👍

Beautifull images, specially the seccond. The first photo: i have no problem at all cloning things from the image to do a bit of cleaning. I also clone branches out if necessary. Things getting different when cloning a other sky in. If i no that in my mind, i always think the seccond photo “is it real”? And i know there are some “big” youtube vloggers who will do that. Thx for the vlog James.
@JamesBrewphoto
@JamesBrewphoto 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much. I'm not a fan of removing things from images generally - I'll only do it for small distractions in a scene. Things like replacing a sky - that's an absolute no no for me. So rest assured my images will NEVER have skies replaced etc

I am so envious of your little back yard James, it’s gorgeous. The images you punch out regularly lend me to add the area to my bucket list. A beautifully composed and executed vlog mate well done again. One question on your Kase magnetic filter mate but did u go up in size due to vignetting risk and get the step up ring? I use the 77mm thread size wolverine so just wondering mate👍❤️📸🤓🇬🇧👍
@JamesBrewphoto
@JamesBrewphoto 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Chris - the Isle of Man is a great place to visit with lots of well off the beaten track photography opportunities. I use the 95mm filters to eliminate the vignette risk which seems to work well - my largest lens filter thread is 82mm. They are really great filters overall - I'll do a video on them sometime soon 👍

Beautiful last image James. Would you have boosted the reds more to bring out the red in the autumnal Heather on the right or left it more natural to keep the image leading you through it. Love this channel and your style.

Thanks Adam! Believe it or not I'm actually colour blind and really struggle with reds and greens. So I didn't even really notice the reds at all 🙂
@adamsmith6594

@@JamesBrewphoto James thats just amazing andnliterally a credit to your abilities as a photographer. I'd certainly mention that in your next vlog. Many more people are colour blind than you'd think and sharing how you have adapted to that aspect of photography would certainly be worth sharing. Its actually incredible. Obviously you have no reference point for that opinion because you've always had that, but if you look at the implications of it, particularly regarding saturation in post processing (which is used as a tactic to lead the eye through and image) its quite a feat mate. A study years ago revealed how much people vary with regard to eye sight even revealing that some could see in the infra red spectrum. But for certain share it. Amazing.
@JamesBrewphoto
@JamesBrewphoto 3 жыл бұрын
@@adamsmith6594 Thanks Adam - I guess I'm just used to it so don't see it as anything particularly special but I guess it must have an impact on how I judge colour both in the field and in post. If I remember I'll mention it in a video at some point :-)

Hello James, how is your auto-focus on the Z7? Better than the D-850? Do you have to carry several batteries for this camera? Cheers.
@JamesBrewphoto
@JamesBrewphoto 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gino, for landscape photography the auto focus is no different at all. I carry 3 batteries with me. 90% of the time 1 battery is enough and maybe only 1% of the time I'd ever need the third. Battery performance is very impressive
@stevejarvis186

Hi James, its a good message, however, you haven't always got time to scout and plan, sometimes you've just got to take the shot, and regardless of the harshness of the light. For instance, you're on a trip to the USA and Grand Canyon, you're not going to be able to scout and come back in a weeks or months time, maybe, you've just got to take some shots today, because maybe its going to be the only time you ever visit the Grand Canyon. I went there in 1988, always planning to go back again, but raising a family and thus cost, and now poor health have prevented me from ever returning there. Luckily I took a load of shots at the time and thats it they're going to have to do for my `Grand Canyon shoot`!
@JamesBrewphoto
@JamesBrewphoto 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, the planning and scouting message obviously is more difficult with regards to travel photography. It's more geared and targeted towards landscape photography in your local area, which in this Covid and Climate change world - is going to become more important than ever before 👍
