This week I would like to share some things I do to make my lifestyle more sustainable and eco friendly. From always bringing my own shopping bags, to using a stainless steel straw or reusable beeswax paper to wrap food for example. They may seem like small steps, but all the small changes add up to making a big difference in the end if we all do it!

I honestly mean this the Dutch are such extremely smart people the way they think and live is what the rest of society should live like. Your country has invented so many things, I find it so fascinating such a small country with brilliant minds. Thank you for more great ideas on how to keep waste away. Greetings from Canada. Also, I LOVE and adore Elephants just like you.

@@egelisk4943 First of all I think your facts are completely wrong I have two children who are part Dutch OMA is from Eindhoven with many of the family still living there. I know that what you are saying is not at all true, do you know how much they have invented? HUM maybe do some research cause it is quite amazing. Dutch women are beautiful and good-hearted, they will tell you the truth so it may come across as rude to North Americans. I LOVE the DUTCH people, and I am glad my children have this nationality in them. Racism is everyplace especially more so in the United States, it is not right at all but none the less it exists. People should try to find the good in each other instead of saying unkind things online. You need to see the goodness and creativity of the Dutch people it really is amazing.

@@Rebecca-pr3fn You're an American. I was born and have lived in that country for 28 years. With all due respect, but you have no place to tell me what the situation is like there. Before the 2000's it may have been different but a lot has changed since then. Dutch women are NOT good-hearted or beautiful. The grass always seems to be greener on the other side. Every country has their racists but in The Netherlands racism became the norm over the years. It's culturally accepted now. You wouldn't even now what I'm talking about since you're probably white. The Dutch HATE everyone except themselves. It's the only reason I can give for the fact I felt miserable trying to fit in with them. I live in Germany now and can see what that time has done to me. Again, you wouldn't know.

@@Rebecca-pr3fn You don't have to be sorry. The Dutch 'image' of a tolerant country stills sticks with many foreigners and many can't understand it when we're talking about discrimination. But that 'image' is somewhat old-fashioned now unfortunately. It has become an increasingly intolerant and xenophobic country. Especially towards the Muslim minorities. The EU actually concluded that The Netherlands is one of the most discriminating countries within the EU.

I adore you! These are such great tips for a sustainable day, where I am from plastic bags haven't been banned yet, even though people try to avoid them. I find ways to plant whatever I can in our yard, it won't change much, it's not a forest, but I still enjoy it because I love nature. Last year I've planted an Apricot tree and it's doing great, we also have an Almond tree, then roses (red planted by my sister and pink planted by me), just yesterday I've planted 48 Gladiolus bulbs, I've started with only five that our neighbour gave to us few years ago and they just multiply, also 10 Tulips for a good start, they multiply too. I would love to encourage people to plant more.🌳🌹🌷🌱❤

I love all of these tips! To add on to the reusable bag trend, I seem a small rolled up one in my purse all the time so I at least have one if I'm out and want to buy something. In my little family of 2 (me and my husband) we use cloth for everything you could use paper for - even toilet paper. We use "family cloths" and I swear by them. Another thing we do it buy big bags of staples like beans and rice to create less package waste. We cook almost all our own food from scratch and store most of the food in glass containers. We aren't zero waste, but certainly low waste. I think every bit helps.

Hi Doutzen, being Dutch I am familiar with all your tips and do most of them myself (except for the re-usable cotton pads). 💛💛💛💚 so grateful you use the channel this way! similar to yours; I use cotton pad (mostly) instead of disposable pads for the woman cycle. I used to make compost at home, but it’s better when you have a garden. The compost can be used as fertiliser. And I throw less and less plastics away, storing it up, maybe making a bag out of it or so laters. 🤷🏻‍♀️

HI Doutzen ! Thank you for your good tips. What I recently decided to do, is to keep the fruit tips and dry them before to just plant them wherever I walk in nature. Mother earth is very generous to us, we buy a kilo of fruits and here we have a potential of a dozen of fruit trees !!!! If everybody were doing so , no one would starve as there would be vegetable and fruit trees everywhere ! I also try to prepare less food to not have too much left over. When I realize that there are some food in my fridge that I may not have time to eat, I put them in the freezer to save them for another time. I also tend to not buy fruits and veg that are over wrapped with plastic. I'd love it to be like in the past, no wrapping at all. In the shower I wet my body, stops the water flow and lather and foam, then switch the water back on to rinse my body. And so much more.....🤩💗

Doutzenday! Hooray!♥️ This topic is so important too. I've been composting as well in my yard with food waste and it's great :) I also turn off the shower water while I'm applying products to my hair; it saves a little water and the water is only off for such a short time that it's still warm when I turn it right back on! The food containers are called Tupperware in America by the way haha

Doutzen is really inspiring. I'd just like to congratulate her and her family on their green credentials instead of the consumerist throw-away society. One point, using paper bags in food shops has no environmental impact, theyre biodegradable, but dont use the plastic bags they supply in shops. I saw another of your videos on a bigger topic of sustainablility in the fashion design world. Surely its a difficult industry to apply sustainability to, but best to more careful selection of materials and less of a throw away culture in the fashion. Was impressed by the re-purposed raincoat made from recycled fabric, very stylish. Applying recycling principles to materials used in the fashion world has interesting possibilities for creative use of recycled materials. Im an architect with interests in sustainable design btw :-)

I use white vinegar to clean the house. It really works everywhere, in the kitchen, the bathroom, etc. Even on the floor ! Yes the smell is a bit strong, but it leaves rapidly. Otherwise, what my half-sister does is adding essential oils. There is white vinegar, but you have a lot of artisanal cleaning products with black soap, baking soda .. You have solid soap, but you also have solid shampoos that I really wanna try (if someone already tried them please tell me !) I also use biological/eco-friendly laundry for my clothes. And a cup in my periods. For the food, I buy local fruits and vegetables of the season and eat less meat. By the way I'm a student, and I can tell that all of those eco-friendly option are so much less expensive than the "classical" ones 👍 (btw sorry for my english that's not perfect, I'm french and still working on it !)

fantastic video! my example is that I spent hundreds of hours to digitize all of the assignments for a 300-student class I teach 2 times a year for the last 5 years. Not a single sheet of paper is printed in my class and probably saved a forest to date. Other tips I have is to re-use the back of paper before throwing it away, finishing your food on your plate, and using solar panels to power your home.

@Mariska B surprisingly, I live in a small town. But it may have to do with the fact that I work with nurses, they make a lot of money, and most of them just want to talk about shopping, travelling, drinking, and spending loads of money. Many of them are very nice, but just not my interests, I don't fit in. And outside of work, many women are still obsessed with the "keeping up with the Jones's mentality" which, again, obsessed with looking rich. I hope things are changing, that would be wonderful.

Dear Doutzen, thank you for your thoughtful video. I used to ride my bike more, but sadly, someone broke into our garage and stole my and my husband's bike last fall :( He used to ride his bike to work to save money on gas. They were very expensive, so we won't be able to replace them anytime soon. But, we do other eco-friendly things. The biggest change I've made in the last few months is to make bread from scratch. I used to use a bread machine but they break down frequently, which ends up being such a waste to throw them out. So I stopped, and now I just love making bread and buns for my family. We also have a small garden and shop at the local farmer's market in the summer months. I also buy dolphin-friendly, humane animal treated pet food for my cats. We eat a lot of food from scratch, and recycle bottles and such. I too am trying to raise my children to be mindful of the environment and to give back to others. Love your videos, you are such a thoughtful, mindful person. Take care! hugs, from Canada

This is awesome! I use reusable cotton pads as well, except that they're bamboo - they come in this nice bag and when you need to clean them, you put them in the bag and just toss it in the wash with your clothes. Also, I'm a huge fan of growing your own food/material (which I get might not be optimal for people who live in a city) so I have a garden outside, and I try and have different types of plants around that I can use (basil, lavender, rosemary, etc) so I don't have to go to the store.

I save my jars :) all my jars, they always come on handy. Even if just to infuse water etc or maybe send soup with someone, or take soup, store rice or whatever else , or to take on a the bus and just recycle the glass where I am going or before getting on plane , train etc I often forget my grocery bags as well , I think a canvas backpack helps with this. If you forget you can just stick it in the back pack, or if on a bike , in the basket. Lots of packaging though still in super markets. I am hoping that refilling stations become a new trend :) I know in AMS you have the market etc, and stuff like this , but i think eventually it will become what we do :)

I try to stick to buying makeup or beauty products that come in small tubs not squeeze tubes because I like to reuse the small tubes for sample skincare/makeup or other small quantities of things. Or to store larger skincare items in to use while traveling. And I find that the screw top tubs are easier to recycle if you can’t find another purpose for them. Something else I like to implement is products I don’t like for my face or don’t use anymore I use on my body/décolletage (as long as it’s not a harsh active ingredient) so I limit waste and actually get use from said product. 🤗

Hi Doutzen as always great advise. I do remember that the Dutch are doing a lot of things echo friendly already for a long time. I always try here in my apartment in So Cal to separate the trash , like plastic and glassware and that kind of stuff in a separate container. Thank you for the video.

Thank you so much for all the tips! Me and my husband tend to go a natural grocery store that sells beans, flour, oils, vinegar in bulk , we bring our own jars with us, so we don't need to use plastic bags or even paper. There is a scale in a store, which tells you and the cashier how much your jars weigh, so you just pay for what you put into the jars.

Hi Doutzen! Great video and will definitely use the beeswax and loose leaf tea trick. I make sure to turn off water and lights when they are not being used. Never leave any food in my plate and not let food go to waste! I'm also going to try and make my own reusable sheet masks since I love those things! Thanks for sharing your tips!

Love that you use your platform to spread awareness and give tips on how to live more sustainable. Since you said you like to check out others peoples tips I can recommend Margaux Zanetti KZfaq Chanel. She uploaded a video a year ago talking about how to reduce plastic usage, which I thought was very helpful. I was able to incorporate her tips into my everyday life.

I leave a metal pitcher in my shower to collect shower water, that I use to water my plants or rinse if I'm cleaning something. You can use excess pasta water to water your plants too! At home we really save energy, and only have energy saving bulbs and never leave an unattended room with power on unnecessarily. I think a big one is using non toxic chemicals in soaps like detergents, shampoo and dish soap because these chemicals go down the drain into our drinking water and eventually into big body's of water. I love this video I hope people got inspired to make a few changes in their lifestyle 🙂

Even though I am from the other half of the world I have always loved the "Dutchies" how you think, your culture. The world should think/act like you and it would be a better place. I bring my bags when I go shopping and I also use metal straws...AAAAND I remind my husband to bring bags with him!! Lol Next in my list of eco-friendly products is the beeswax paper! 💗🙏😘

This is great Doutzen.. i mean, what makes us think we're the only living things here on this miraculous place!? Mind the other life forms that are here and can't help themselves when they encounter human made rubbish. The supermarkets here don't use plastic bags, so every shopper has to use cotton bags and keep them.

Hi, you said so many things. My input- I revived my Mom's wardrobe from the 70's and the 80's (she keeps her best pieces), had them fitted, and wear them with pleasure instead of buying all new clothes. Great fabrics and design that does not exist now.

I love living in Amsterdam because it's so eco-friendly in comparison to many other international cities. Riding the bike is so freeing, recycling is readily available outside your door and everyone seems very educated in terms of climate change. Thanks for sharing! :)

You can Make Yourown napkins out of older cotton pillow cases, and fabric shopping bags out of bed sheets, repurposing is another sustainable go to, I use my coffee waste (the used grain powder) on the home plants as top soil add in, also enjoy the variety of use for baking soda+ Aple vinegar or Limon juice for house cleaning as a product substitute, Baking soda+limon as a night skin exfoliation, the tongue scraper out of copper for daily use, and I reuse the glass containers from the groceries I buy, for storage, food on the go, or special deco, candle light, try to keep the children cloths in a loop with other children that can still enjoy them, do the same with books and toys.

Is so refreshing to see everyone riding their bikes on their way to the office or to run errands while wearing suits, gowns, etc...you guys rock!
