Today I’m going to cover the best tests for low stomach acid and what to do for a deficiency in stomach acid.
The best tests for a stomach acid deficiency:
1. Riddler’s gastric acid reflux point test
Press on your rib cage one inch below your breastbone and one inch to the left. If the area is tender, you may lack stomach acid.
2. The baking soda test
Dissolve 1/4 tsp. of baking soda in eight ounces of water and drink it in the morning before eating. If you don’t have enough acid in your stomach, you may start burping within one to five minutes.
3. The betaine hydrochloride test
Take one betaine hydrochloride supplement before eating, and add more with each meal. If you have low stomach acid, your symptoms will be relieved.
Symptoms of low stomach acid (low hydrochloric acid):
• Indigestion
• Gas
• Bloating
• Acid reflux
• GERD
Another common problem people experience as they age is called atrophic gastritis.
Symptoms of atrophic gastritis:
• Mucosal atrophy
• Low hydrochloric acid
• Low B12 or folate
• Low iron
• Intolerance of red meat
• Indigestion
• Gas
• Cognitive decline
• Brittle nails
• Restless legs
• Thinning hair
• Acid reflux
• Muscle cramps or muscle twitches
• Rosacea
• Bad breath
Common causes of atrophic gastritis:
1. H. pylori
What to do:
• Consume sulforaphane
2. Low hydrochloric acid
What to do:
• Take betaine hydrochloride
• Take methylcobalamin and methylfolate
In some cases, you may need to fix the inflammation in your gut before you increase your stomach acid. You can do this by consuming cabbage juice, wheatgrass juice powder with water, zinc, and probiotics. It’s also important to get on a Healthy Keto® diet.

Why would more acid lead to less burping and not more? More acid means that more sodium bicarbonate will be neutralized to release CO2 gas. *Na+(aq) + HCO3-(aq) + H+(aq) + Cl-(aq) → H2CO3(aq) + Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq) → H20(l) + CO2(g) + Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq)* *OR* *HCO3-(aq) + H+(aq) → H2CO3(aq) → H20(l) + CO2(g)* Is there some other component to stomach contents at play besides aqueous HCL? This is _basically_ the same as the classic baking soda and vinegar reaction.

Sorry Dr. Berg ! I only have a slight modification here. In the baking soda test, you should burp within 1-5 minutes of drinking the baking soda to make sure you have enough stomach acid not the opposite. As I always say, you are the gift from God to all human beings.❤❤❤

Yes, I agree with you Omar... I believe that the opposite of what is described in the 2nd test (baking soda) of the video should be accurate. Because Dr. Berg said:" If you have enough acid, you won't have this burping." It should be the opposite. Viewers here may want to search the web for Sodium Bicarbonate test for acid. 🙂

@@ohanaomar77 at 1:57 of the video, Dr Berg described baking soda test again and at this time stamp, it is accurate. I believe there are some errors in the video editing that's causing the confusion. Stomach acid is acidic. Baking soda is alkaline. If a person has enough stomach, the burp will happen within 1-5 mind (sometimes even within less than a minute). Cheers. I am no expert. Dr Berg is the expert here. 🙏🙂
@lorenwillcock
@lorenwillcock Жыл бұрын
I agree. I have read several articles on this and my understanding is no burp within 3-5 mins (depending on the article you read) means low stomach acid. While a burp would within 3-5 mins would indicate adequate stomach acid. This makes sense when you think what happens when you add baking soda to an acid like vinegar. It releases co2 gas which in your stomach would cause a burp. But if you dont have enough acid in the reaction then not enough co2 to cause the burp.
@LinnRivers
@LinnRivers Жыл бұрын
Yes, I was going to point this out too! This is a big mistake. It's a chemical reaction to the stomach acid that makes you burp.

I was getting fatigue, anemia, neurological problems, lower cognitive function and a lot of other symptoms. I stumbled onto taking a disolvable b12 and got some life back. I then started on a quest to try to figure out was wrong with me. I took nearly every stomach helpful pill. I finally started taking Betaine before meals. Supplementing ADEK, B12, and Iron and started a slow and steady climb back to health. I found that I cant really eat sugar or it seems to weaken my stomach acid. Same with processed carbohydrates, bread, cakes, cookies. I sometimes wonder if it is also because these items have baking soda which weakens the acid? In any case I thank Dr. Berg for helping. These videos are invaluable!

If you think about it, it's likely impossible to have too much stomach acid because the cells producing the acid will stop at their design ph. It is possible to have too much stomach acid in your esophagus because there isn't supposed to be any there.
@neilkaufman1809
@neilkaufman1809 5 ай бұрын
You're right, they all say the opposite because that's what the medical universities teach them. I listened to my doctor for 10 years and had too many outbreaks before finding out the truth and experiencing it. Acid reflux is too much food, not enough acid, so the food comes back up the esophagus. The little flapper at the bottom of your esophagus only closes in a high acid environment. It's very rare to have too much acid with the standard American diet. Most including myself, it was indigestion from too little acid.

I noticed this as well. The bicarbonate of soda will neutralise acid, producing CO2 (carbon dioxide gas) and water. The CO2 gas is what causes you to burp. If you have LOW stomach acid then there is less of (or no) reaction and thus less (or no) gas produced. Therefore if you drink the bicarb and you do NOT burp within a few minutes, this indicates low stomach acid.

MAJOR ERROR RE: BAKING SODA TEST ! You really need to correct this. It's the opposite from what is said in this video. If you burp before 3-5 minutes you have NORMAL (or possibly high) stomach acid. Cleveland Clinic website, naturopathic websites etc etc. Baking soda reacts with acid to form gas. If you have enough (or too much) stomach acid, you will burp before 3-5 minutes. Test should be repeated over 5 mornings.

I have a little theory i'm curious about and I cannot test but probably someone could from your audience, Dr Berg. Eating too much carbs doesnt require the body to produce much stomac acid so the brain shuts the production off or puts it to the minimal levels. In the regions where one has a protein and fat rich diet probably none even have ever heard about gerd or low stomac acid. Thanks as always for the great summarising video.

Dr. Berg, I believe the description of the baking soda test is backwards: with high stomach acid, the burb should occur within the first minute as the base reacts quickly to the strong acid, and when the acid is weak, the reaction takes longer -- 5 minutes or so.

I am in that group of inflamed stomach folks (erosive gastrtis) so I have to heal up first before doing anything. Ugh. But it does explain why years ago I tried acv and got horrible pain from doing it. The video that inspired me to try it never warned me about making things worse by doing so. Oh it burned real bad. I was hurting for a long time , days to weeks. I cannot tolerate acidic foods much at all now. But I will bring this up with my dr. Thanks for this video. Erosive gastrtis is so painful. So few foods I can eat. I AM TRYING A LIQUID DIET NOW, TO DEAL WITH PROBLEMS IN MOTILITY. People like myself found out too late to prevent our serious and painful conditions. Some of us have genetic diseases also that put us at higher risk of health issues in our lifetimes. My mom faced similar issues as I do now so it is genetic. I would say to folks to never take your good health for granted. Do what you can to care for your body. Thanks Dr. BERG for this video. Timely for me.

So, your saying that because I keep complaining I cannot burp and I am getting horrible pains. They removed my gallbladder, three endoscopies, colonoscopies,2 ER visits ( once in ambulance), several procedures to see why I cannot burp. This has all been over 20 years. Prescription acid pump inhibitors as well as over the counter, and all they have found is 12 food allergies. And now if it happens, I make myself hurl to help the pain. Many many doctors and noone could figure out the pain. I will try this next. Thank you.

VERY important correction for anyone watching this!!! He has the burping portion backwards. If you have enough stomach acid, you will burp within those 5 minutes. And you are looking for a good size burp. Not just a small one here and there. It is the chemical reaction with the stomach acid that makes you burp. If you don't have enough,you will not have the reaction.
@zerrodefex
@zerrodefex Жыл бұрын
That burp is carbon dioxide gas being liberated as the sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) reacts with the hydrochloric acid (HCl), the products of the neutralization reaction are water (H2O), salt (NaCl), and carbon dioxide (CO2).

Agreed. I just watched his video yesterday about the vagus nerve connection with low stomach acid and how to support it by increasing your intake of thiamine (B1). Already I have noticed a difference, but also plan to up my intake of B12/B9 as well as the cabbage juice/wheat grass juice regimen. I'm into fermented foods and make about 6 or 7 different ones including kefir and sauerkraut, and they're great, too. It does seem that most of us are out of balance due to lack of proper nutrition and it creates a snowball effect of symptoms. Glad we have Dr. Berg's common sense approach to help get us back on track. I'm disgusted with the conventional approach of just treating the symptoms... you never get healthy that way.

Don't get me wrong, I like Dr. Berg, but he absolutely, totally got the sodium bicarbonate test WRONG. If you have low stomach acid, you will not burp right away. Always do some research after listening to any video online. For the record, the chemical reaction of sodium bicarbonate mixed with an acid is Chemistry 101.

You have the baking soda test the wrong way around. Enough acid causes strong burps. No burps or insufficient burps from low acid. ie. The acid (HCl) reacts to bicarb giving off CO2 which causes burps!

Second test was explained wrong. It is the opposite. If you burp before 2 minutes after drinking the baking soda, you have too much stomach acid. If you do it between 2 and 5 minutes, normal acid and after 5 minutes very low acid. I made this test and have been using Hydrochloric acid because I burped after 10 minutes. When you have enough acid in the stomach, it reacts with the acid and produce the burp.

Been watching a lot of your videos over the last almost 2 years. I am over age 50. i have had alleries & asthma most of my life. been taking B- complex (I have taken to prevent mosquitos from getting at me) Zinc been taking acidophilus for about 20 yrs.(it fended off a tooth infection) til I was able to get to a dentist. Interesting you say fat is what attacks teeth. I had allergies worse than my asthma. Found the trigger was big temperature exposure. Been doing your breathing exercises. (I used to be in choir & band had to do breathing exercises) makes sense now. I am fine til the night air triggers me to cough most evenings The thing that has changed in the last 2 yrs is. I cough & my sinues get all plunged up. From your videos I think I have low stomach acid. I have had an issue my whole life of not being able to drink anything wIth carbanation. I drink water mostly. I can't have much juice. I am not diabetic. My dad is. Yes, I need to eat more vegetables. I have cut my carbs out 90% of the time. I eat them when I wake up. Not sure I can do the fasting. I eat beans & rice with a spoon. Ginger seems to be helping my stomach. I am going to get (Hcl) when I can. I didnt know all of these vitamin absorption have a connection. I have been caring for both my folks by myself for the past 3 yrs. I have not been able to get normal amounts of sun. I know stress is a big issue. So yes more vegetables, potassium. Thank you much for your info & explaining it in a simple way writing your big main points & write the things. I like how you have listed 1 thru list of things. I am dyslexic & I have to see things in print. I hate how people say that chiorpators are not doctors. you know as much as a doctor without using pills that have side effects. I avoided it for quite some time because the person who really advocates and well known for it is a medium known as Medical Medium, however I have to say it does seem to be building back up my digestion to what it once was. 16 ounces fresh made celery juice every morning with nothing else added a few hours before any other meals. What to do 👉 • Take betaine hydrochloride • Take methylcobalamin and methylfolate In some cases, you may need to fix the inflammation in your gut before you increase your stomach acid. You can do this by consuming cabbage juice, wheatgrass juice powder with water, zinc, and probiotics. It’s also important to get on a Healthy Keto® diet.

I wasted 40 years of my life not knowing this. It started slowly @22 and got worse until 49. I tried to eat healthy and switch to different diets but in vain. I had 9 of the symptoms in your list over time and additionally joint pains and an auto-immune eye inflammation in both eyes and needed Cortisone drops for two years to keep the eyes in check. Of course other factors like low vitamin D and B over time made things additionally worse. Fixing vitamin D, magnesium, zinc, selenium and a keto diet and intermittent fasting I got rid of the inflammation and 4 of the symptoms in the list (reflux, brittle nails, gas, cramps), but every diet change did still upset my stomach. All my doctors during these times never once checked my stomach acid. And now after only 4 days with BHCL I already gained 2 pounds weight and no more diarrhea/constipation and stomach pains and am able to eat more.

According to my research, Dr. Berg is incorrect about the baking soda test. You should burp before 3 minutes after drinking the 1/4 teaspoon/4oz water mix (on an empty stomach) if acid levels are ok. If no burp, acid levels are low. If you pass 5 minutes and no burp, acid levels are very low. He mentions that baking soda is alkaline which is correct and neutralizes acid (also correct), but the reaction of both mixed together creates bubbles, thus the burping.

This is the one I’ve been looking for: a home test to see if our stomachs are truly producing too much acid (as my gastroenterologist says) or are we producing not enough acid. Last Feb. / March I began having trouble swallowing, even water got stuck and it scared me enough to rush to the hospital. After many tests, CT scans, private clinics, acupuncture, live cell analysis etc, otolaryngology scopes up the nose and down the throat, and 3 more visits to emergency, all saying I was completely healthy and couldn’t find a problem. Finally we did an endoscopy revealing substantial narrowing , inflammation of the oesophagus and stomach lining. So 40mg daily of PPI Pantoprazole for 4 months then 20mg Pantoprazole 4 more months to ween myself off. Have stopped the PPI 3 weeks now replaced it with DGL Licorice (after doing my own research), chewing one tablet 20 minutes before each meal. I won’t lie, it’s been hard as stomach acid sometimes creeps back up and burns but overall I am feeling better and can eat, swallow more foods, in smaller bites. The hardest part a year ago was severe lack of nutrients and calories. Lost 95 pounds in a few months and was very weak. Now, the Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice helps the body heal naturally by releasing healthy mucous, lining the oesophagus and digestive tract. Watching Dr. Berg I learned a lot more about which foods help GERD and overall health. My routine daily usually goes like this: DGL. Variety of nuts and seeds, Dulse (sea grass), manuka honey, nutritional yeast, Quercetin, Vitamins C and D. Almond milk or water. DGL then lunch of 2 Omega3 eggs over Guacamole toast with micro greens, nutritional yeast, water. DGL. Probiotics. then supper of either a fish or meat, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, artichoke, micro greens. Water. multivitamin. I hope this helps anyone and thank you Dr. Berg for all the help. NB., more foods that help heal and soothe the gut: Ginger, cloves, cinnamon, chamomile tea, cantaloupe, cucumber, turmeric, DGL Liquorice, parsley, basil, coriander, celery. Of course, each individual will vary according to what you can tolerate.

Dr. Berg, This video is very disappointing. Your video advice is usually of high quality, but you missed the mark here. The stomach HCL acid test with sodium bicarbonate works exactly the opposite of your instructions. The sodium bicarbonate will react with stomach acid to create a chemical reaction that produces carbon dioxide. This will make you burp. So, the more stomach acid you have the MORE the sodium bicarbonate will make you burp.

Hi! I LOVE your videos I am so glad I discovered your channel! I wanted to thank you for all the info you give us. It’s life saving. I definitely have a severe case of low stomach acid and on top of that a mild hypothyroidism that doesn’t help much. I do have the Betaine, but how many capsules do you recommend before a meal ? Mine is 648 mg. Thank you very much!

Surely the sodium bicarbonate test will have full conversation of the bicarbonate and release of CO2 if one has normal/high acid?

I also have high B12 1345. Lots of videos about low b12 here. Haven’t found anything about when it’s high. I sprinkle nutritional yeast on salads.

Dr Berg, re bicarbonate of soda test. Is it possible you got your explanation the wrong way around? The way I’ve heard it, when you take the bicarb if you burp a lot, your stomach acid is good; because the acid alkali reaction produces the gas. If you don’t burp, you don’t have enough stomach acid.
