There are nearly a million known insect species in the world, but most have one of just five common types of mouthparts. Why is this information useful to scientists? Anika Hazra explains how the features of an insect’s mouthparts can help identify which order it belongs to, while also providing clues about how it evolved and what it feeds on.
Lesson by Anika Hazra, animation by Giulia Martinelli.

Isn't that amazing? I get home with my head bursting with thoughts on all those topics which I'm working on or exploring in my life at the moment, and just when I think I'm a bit closer to understanding "everything" in the world around me I see a simple video like this, and am instantly reminded that I know absolutely *nothing* in the scale of all human knowledge and the universe, that there are a seemingly infinite number of subjects which I'll never even think about in my entire life.

I've detected a little mistake in Spanish subtitles. In 1:53, they traduce leafhoppers as "saltamontes", but they're part of the Orthoptera order, the right word would be "chicharritas" or "saltahojas". Anyway, a great and interesting video!! 😍

Funfact: Normally when you try to identify an insect, you dont look at the mouth part AT ALL because the mouthparts are a phylogenetic feature (there are green apples but not everything that is green is an apple). Instead you look at how the body is structured into segments, how the antennae are formed, if it has wings and how many legs. Most family species you can tell appart by how many tarsal segments (their foot structure) they have at which leg.
