Mo Wenxuan is like any other 9-year-old here; you would be hard-pressed to tell she’s a first-generation Singaporean. But how will she fare in her father’s original hometown in China, away from the material comforts in Singapore?

About the series:
In My Parents’ Shoes follows three children as they return to their parents’ homeland to rediscover their roots. The children, between the ages of seven and 11, have spent most of their lives in Singapore, after their parents settled here either as new citizens or permanent residents. The parents, who are from China, India and the Philippines, celebrate their children's integration into Singapore but at the same time, worry that they may lose their traditions. They fear their children may have become too used to the good life, with little idea about how they themselves grew up. In the first of four parts, the parents share their ups and downs of adjusting to Singapore society, and decide to give their children a taste of life in their country of origin.

In my opinion, I think that it is a good idea to let your child know how hard your life was back then, but you shouldn't make them live exactly how you did. They live in a different generation now and things are very different. If you want to let your child know how your life was, you can show them but don't completely overwhelm them. If you know how bad your life was then, why are you making them suffer too?
@fez877

ffs, its only a day. I went to live in our distant relative village in China in the 1990s, water had to be pulled up from the well and we shit through hole at the floor and they collect the shit and fertilised the field. It was a good experience and i would do it again.

@CNA The title of the video is quite misleading.... I thought she is Singaporean who lived in China and studied there... They could have just stated " Singaporean daughter going back to parents' hometown".... I do have some friends whose parents come from China and they speak Mandarin at home but my friends' Mandarin are not very good. Mainly bc my friends got used to speaking english in sch and in SG it kinda corroded their mother tongue proficiency...

Why not? It is just an acceptable social etiquette practised in Singapore. Singaporeans only reserve it for *a few minutes* when they get to a crowded hawker centre, so they can queue up to buy their hot food. Office workers here love eating lunch together in groups. As each has to go order at their individual food STALLS, they need to find and reserve a table FIRST so they can all go off to buy their food and sit back together with their colleagues. If one stays to guard the table, that person usually ends up not having enough time to buy their food and by the time they come back, everyone has already finished. Queues for food are often long and crowded and the usual allotted lunch hour is 1 hour. *It makes practical sense because you don't have to walk around with a bowl of steaming hot noodles whilst looking for a seat* . Therefore accidents are less likely to happen! They don't reserve it for hours ahead before they eat! Every Singaporean respects the tissue or some personal item on the table. Nobody removes it. It is no different at all from going to a crowded Starbucks or Pret a Manger in London, finding a seat first before you order your food!

Actually China’s Chinese is way harder because their main language is Chinese and their math, science and all that is in Chinese so if you live in Singapore and you’re in primary 6 getting low grades forChinese you will have to go back to primary 5 (not literally) And if you get B for English you will get A for China’suniversity English because I’ve seen my cousin’s English assessment book and he’s currently in university and it’s like primary 4 Singapore English. So you can’t really say that this person is stupid and doesn’t know she’s Chinese etc.
