Gates of the West & Dark Horse Records present ‘A Song For Joe: Celebrating the life of Joe Strummer’ on Friday, August 21 at 3pm ET / 12pm PT / 8pm GMT. Taking place on Joe’s birthday, this event will honor Strummer's legacy with special performances and testimonials, as well as include never-before-seen Joe Strummer live footage.

I spent the weekend with Joe (and the Latino Rockabilly War) when my band, The Way, supported at Brodsworth Miners Hall in 1988... I was 19, and he was 100% the gentleman and teacher you would think him to be. Stayed up till 6am in his Sheffield hotel room talking, drinking, with the fabulous Alex Cox & Zander Schloss (along with my former guitarist, and now writer, Tony Beesley). At the end of that weekend he gave me address and phone no, told me I was welcome to call any time I ventured the 200 miles to London (rare, being 'ont'dole'). Was always tempted but never wanted to bother the great man. Funnily, six years ago I went to pick up a new cat from Sheffield... turned out it belonged to Simon Stafford, whom I'd been acquaintances with since the Longpigs (my 90s band, Electrascope, shared the same studio)... we had much to talk about, and have stayed friends. Let no one ever tell you Joe wasn't the real deal despite his middle class roots... us Mexborough lads can smell bullshit a mile off.

@Heath Palace Hey, what did you think of Jeff Tweedy's version of Death or Glory? It's so weird, cos after all these years that's one Clash song where I never paid much attention to the lyrics beyond the chorus. And the song itself is kinda bouncy and triumphant. But man, hearing Tweedy sing it tore my heart out! godDAMN that's a brutal song. I have a whole new appreciation for it and a real understanding of the story it contains. Anyway, you seem like you know your shit... wanted to get your take. Or if it's one you kinda overlooked... go give it another listen. Right NOW!!! 😆 Have a good one, my friend!

I would like to add until now. Joe strummer still inspires me.Even I am no longer in my youth. He still bring the passion for me not to live a mundane, bleak, systemic life. His message makes me to truly find my best version of myself. Fight expectations of society, to question authority. To humble myself that we are all the same. No one is above anyone. Except everyone mum👍

I spoke to John Cusack on his movie tour and kept praising The Clash, and John said “a little late but welcome to the party” I’m a bit younger than this era but I’ve always heard The Clash on the radio. Once I started digging, I found out just how amazing their music is. Then, I continued on to The Mescaleros. I must say though, Joe’s solo album (Earthquake Weather) is amazing from the start. Love you Joe, wish I could have met you.

@Heath Palace One of the dudes in The Dropkick Murphys has a son named Strummer, probably not much older than your son. It's a great name! I named my son Seamus, after Irish poet Seamus Heaney. Names are so important, so central to a person's identity and self-concept. Anyway, your son has a great one!

Joe said so many profound things via his music, that we all got something from it. Wisdom. He was a genius lyricist. He is sorley missed. That was incredible and brought tears to my eyes. Its good to know i am not the only one sitting around in his room playing this music. He laid a blueprint for music that many still use. Happy Brithday to the legendary and immortal Joe Strummer.

The crazy thing how he named his band “The Mescalero’s” because I live on the Mescalero Apache Reservation!! Thanks. This was is wonderful. I first discover the Clash when I was a child. Joe died when I was a kid and I cried for hours. I have never cried over the death of any artist but Joe. Being from a conservative family, Joe inspired me politically. I read ?Marx at 14 due to The Clash. They gave me inspiration and the idea that I could also make art. That is very powerful . The highlight for me was Frank Turner and Lucinda Williams. I have never heard of J

Joe Strummer is one of my two heroes (the other is Keith Richards). Live not always vocally up to scratch, but no matter what kind of music he was playing, in attitude he was always punk (not Johnny Rotten). He was always a man for the people and against the establishment.

My god,this is so beautiful. I loved the clash,they changed my life when I was a kid. So amazing to see all these great people sing joe’s songs and bring they’re own genius too them. Thanks so much to everyone involved. We love and miss you Joe. X

You realize that how good is an artist when his music keeps so good so much time after his death and played by a lot of musicians of differents music's style.

I was blessed to be able to see this celebration last August 21st. I am viewing it again today and am still blown away how well it was produced. There really should be a cd made with all these great artists doing their versions of these Clash/Strummer classics! Mick Jones should be the one that produces it. (Where are you Mr Jones?) LONG LIVE JOE! "Gone, but not forgotten".....................EVER!
