I came into the possession of a bunch of Apple computers recently. Their status is unknown so we'll dig into them, see what's inside and above all: see if they work!

Nice Macintosh score! Out of all the machines you picked up, I only have experience wih the Mac IIci. It's a pretty nice machine, especially for gaming. I would replace the SCSI hard drive with a SCSI2SD sooner verses later and backup all the contents on that drive. Also, the IIci should be recapped ASAP. Those caps if they haven't started leaking yet, they will. It's super easy to take the machine apart too. There's only one screw holding in the floppy drive/hard drive plastic bracket, then everything else just snaps in or out. Have fun with your new Apple toys! 🙂

Good call! I watched a few videos on the IIci and the caps seem to be high on the list of issues. I'm hoping to fully give it a good servicing because it really fits everything I need for "early mac stuff". Hoping to keep it alive for some time!

Not being able to access the innards is a Steve Jobs thing. When he left, Macs became more accessible. When he came back, Pro Macs stayed very accessible, but opening up an iMac wrong would put you on the bad end of a CRT discharge.

Yeah very true. He definitely had a more ruthless business sense and there is no denying that Apple made a lot of cash controlling the lines of service. Sad it came to that but it made them the mega company they are today.

Yeah and I showed restraint based on what he had! The rest thankfully was going to other enthusiasts to keep as much as possible from being trashed. Fun era to explore and machines have in the stable!

Thanks! Growing up in Scandinavia Macs weren't used in schools like they were here in the US. I didn't have much exposure at all to them, so I love exploring the platforms I haven't used much. Should be fun to dig in to!

Nice haul, also nicely stacked 😀 If you've not already, I recommend removing the PRAM batteries from these. They're likely dead anyway and if they leak will cause a lot of issues. As GWSS noted, you'll want to see about getting the IIci recapped, you're lucky it's booting at all! When you get it recapped, get the cache card recapped too (there's 2 caps on it that leak). The IIci typically will boot in black and white (if it's settings have been lost) so you can bump up the colours in the Monitors Control Panel. Possibly the Quadra 610 would need a recap (some of those are really bad, some are not) and likely the 7100 does not (yet) need it. The Apple Multiple Scan 14 Display (the one you were using with the Quadra 610) seems like it's flyback transformer may be going or there's cracked solder joints on it. It's not really a very good display tbh (as you've noticed it's plastics are incredibly brittle 😬) but the M1212 display is a very nice retro Mac display, beautiful Triniton CRT. The little port on the back with the symbol is an AAUI-15 connector for connecting to a network, you'd need an transceiver (eg: AAUI to Ethernet) to connect to regular ethernet network (10BaseT) For any of these, if you want an excellent modern replacement for the SCSI HDDs, get a BlueSCSI.

That 610 machine was available with a PC Card, to run msdos/windows… I had one, and may still have it… the case was also used in the performa line.

If the monitor is popping, it’s likely the fly back cable is degraded, and you may be hearing high voltage discharge… be careful if you open it up.
@RiksRandomRetro
@RiksRandomRetro Жыл бұрын
Yeah... I may just call that monitor a loss. I have more than I need and looking at them both now I vastly prefer the design of the m1212!

@@RiksRandomRetro absolutely. The 1212 is a Sony trinitron flat aspect tube. The other one is a cheapo for the performa line… terrible image control.

@@SuperVstech I run a dedicated 10/100 retro network if that's what you mean? I assume the dongles provide 10 mbit rj45 based network? Or did I get that wrong?
@SuperVstech
@SuperVstech Жыл бұрын
@@RiksRandomRetro no, the dongle is to use the bnc 10/T old school network. It isn’t a proprietary connector. Many cards used it, so they didn’t have to mount the bnc port on the card. 10/100/1000 etc uses the normal RJ45 connection we all are used to.
