This is a "fused" scene and song from the film Begin Again (2013).
After being fired from his job, Dan Mulligan (Mark Ruffalo) a formerly successful record label executive living in New York City who is estranged from his wife Miriam and struggling to keep up with the changing music industry; goes on a drinking binge which leads him to a bar in the Lower East Side where he encounters Gretta James (Keira Knightley).
Gretta is a young and fiercely independent songwriter who has just broken up with her long-time boyfriend and songwriting partner Dave Kohl (Adam Levine), a newly successful musician who had an affair with one of his producers' assistants. Captivated by Gretta's music, Dan offers to sign her to his former record label, but she refuses.
She however reconsiders the offer and agrees later.

Recently I saw Begin Again and I have to agree with a lot of you. It is an underrated movie with absolutely fantastic music and lyrics. Kiera Knightley was brilliant and has a beautiful voice. She showcased a talent beyond Pirates on the Carribean

What an amazing movie. I can’t count how many times I’ve watched it. This still is one of the best tracks on it. Mark is amazing & Keira’s voice makes this movie. Such a great soundtrack. I always go back to this soundtrack on my dark days…

I really loved this movie, and as a musician, I acknowledge like many of the others how you hear this arrangement all in your head. There are certain instrumental patterns that often repeat through all music when arranging. All the way to the layering of the strings at the end of the last chorus. Mark Ruffalos acting is sooooo good. His looks are just what you would expect from a creative person. Someone lost in their own world hearing something know one else can hear.

This is literally based upon a slew of movies about the Lower East side that were coming out in 2013 such as Inside Llewelyn Davis, Greeting from Tim Buckley and a film about the New York Dolls. If you wanted to simulate the Velvet Underground you would need the Lou Reed and John Cale actors to mainline heroin into their veins for a slightly unpredictable songwriting scene. To simulate the Dolls you might need the Johansen actor to pop Xanax whilst on 4 hits of Rum and coke. If you wanted to capture JB's story you just get a young actor to simulate the starvation he went through from about 18-26. The real kicker would be to then sacrifice that actor in some freak drowning, to really seal the movie with the spirit of that real life greek tragedy. Making a real movie is hard..
