The Cameron 4K's are incredibly inconsistent when it comes to the AI upscaling. At times it can look rather convincing, but most times the waxy faces and DNR are so noticable that you wonder how anyone thought it looked okay during the restoration process. I definitely would recommend getting these releases when it gets a discount, because the price is way too much for what you get here.

I was disappointed in the transfer. The regular bluray is DVD-quality at moments as well. At least I finally have it on physical media though, so that's nice.

35mm film resolves ar 4-6K with latitude. It doesn't need AI upscaling. The "park road secret sauce" is a disaster. It's DNR on steroids. Except, it isn't smearing grains- it's artificially replacing elements of the image with AI nearest neighbor approximations.

@@therealshanelee when you do your new theatre tour, is there any chance you could either show us or tell us some of your calibration and measurement results for things like crossover, room decay, decibel level etc? Or even do a separate video. I ask as you spent so much time speaking to people like poe I think he's called and doing research that I'd love to know what you was able to achieve.

Between the color grade and the removal of grain, this looks bad. Aliens looks better and less waxy. It’s amazing that Cameron thinks this stuff looks good.

While True Lies is more obviously bad, Aliens is more infuriatingly bad because its one of my favorite films of all time. The first film got a proper remaster a few years back, so idk why Aliens couldn't get the same courtesy.

Sound wise, this movie sounded great on my Sony HT-A9. Picture quality was great on my LG OLED, but yes some scenes looked very wax like.

I got mine 4K copy over the weekend and absolutely love it. I have no problems with how they did the upgrade. It is one of the best 4Ks out there.

I actually thought the sound effects were dated. There are some scenes where the gunfire had a rich sound to it.The climax I think was the best in regards to audio. I actually thought the transfer was decent for the most part. In my opinion Aliens was better despite its enhanced look. True Lies could have been a little darker. Every scene runs too bright. The gun fire often looks a bit white you can't see any orange or reds from the muzzle flashes. I can't complain about True Lies 4K image. This is the best its ever looked.

Sorry Shane, the DTS 2.0 is better on the disc than the Atmos, it’s more true to the soundtrack.

@therealshanelee I don't agree with that assessment shane. There is absolutely good reason to choose the other audio options like 5.1 or 2.0 over just anything dolby atmos. Atmos from anything before the hobbit is pure revisionism at best and is pretty inconsistent with the results. Some mixes sounds pretty good while others doesn't sound right at all. I have a pretty good atmos layout 5.1.4 and I can say most of the times older movies sound better to me with the original theatrical mixes if it's available.that being said I can't speak for true lies 2.0 mix as I haven't heard it yet but when hearing the atmos mix I was a bit disappointed with as it sounded anemic at times, definitely no reference mix whereas the original dts 5.1 mix from the laserdisc was so bombastic and dynamic it was such an audio treat.

Aliens lukely looks more processed since this is the second time they scrubbed off all the film grain and recolored it.. this and the 2010 bluray release

This release is such frustration as there was so much potential. Not only for the video but certainly the audio. I would love to hear your thoughts if you could run the old DTS or THX master Ac3 laserdisc Audio track as a comparison. Yes, the video might put you in a cardiac arrest scoring a 0.0000001 out of 10, for 480i composite. But id reckon you'd be pleasantly surprised just how far the audio track bass levels have fallen on the new 4k by comparison to a near 30yr old release of a by-gone era AV Legend.

I don’t get the hate in this transfer. Everyone knows the original material was not very good. This result makes it look the best it’s ever been. Now onto more important question Shane, I notice new chairs? Are you doing a review ? They look interesting since they’re low back.

Why wasnt the original material very good? It was shot on 35mm film and would be perfectly fine to get 4-6K filmic materil out of it...

Why don't you use a miniDSP 2x4HD to load bass files for all these movies. It won't matter then what the disc's native bass is like

Once your system is calibrated you shouldn't need to alter it with a third party device.

@@therealshanelee I agree in principal Shane but how many films do you know are heavily lacking in bass?.... Lots. They lack in varying degrees so the best way is to calibrate by way of adding a room curve which will generically improve your base level before tailoring per movie to improve your bass level 🙂

@@therealshanelee yes I totally agree with this. That’s exactly what they want to know….. but they should also know that all is not lost when the disc-provided bass is impotent. There are options to improve the outcome. Maybe a subject for a different video? Regardless, I urge YOU to try it as it truly is a game changer! Been using the miniDSP for years and now with EzBEQ it’s so simple to enter the realms of bass bliss!

I’m glad that I got this movie on 4K too Shane Lee bro and it looks good in 4K and I really did love Jamie Lee Curtis black dress that was really good too in 4K and also loved 🥰 Tia Carrere in this movie too she is so incredibly sexy as hell bro and I love her black dress too and my god she is so good in this movie too and I had a huge crush on her too and I like this movie too 10/10 for me Shane Lee bro 😎

I am not blind you obviously didn't see Aliens when it was shown theatrically. Aliens on 4k is the best of the Cameron bunch, if you hate film grain youre more likely to love True Lies on 4k, smoothed out, waxy and AI is not used no where near as well as The Abyss and Aliens. True Lies makes for a very inconstent and distracting viewing experience to how I recall it looking in cinemas upon release and even the dvd wasn't an issue

Fair review. I'm glad they went with a clean up, rather than not. If the movie is the French Connection or something, you gotta keep the grain, as it adds to the look and mood of the movie. I think Cameron's intentions were for it to be a clean looking movie when he shot it, and the film benefits from the upgrade. Just keep your video settings as close to a film mode as possible, with sharpness at zero, contrast modest, and all video enhancements turned off.

It's different but is on par with T2 and Aliens. Some shots are very problematic some others very defined, A lot of artificial intelligence was used to create this disc, as well as a massive use of dnr. They tried to correct some blurry shots by creating a combination of fake bokeh effects and image enhancement and It looks Bad. No real HDR grading work was done, just a minium Rec.2100 HDR P3-D65 limited 203nits reference conversion that looks over-exposed. I work as a colorist, that's clearly top 10 of the worst looking disc of the format. I made a custom HDR color correction on my channel based on original 35mm stills if you're interested.

Wait, Wait, Wait, Shane.. U gave a 8.8 for Gran Turismo and a 8.7 for True Lies. Really!! GT Blows the doors off TL.. I played my Laserdisc version of TL and went to one of my favorite spots. When the F-16 taken off still sounds like the jet is in my backyard. This 4k version jus plain Suck!! We waited years for this Crap. JC should be ashame approving the disc. What a Waste, I want my BASS!!! lol... But i still don't see hw u gave GT such a low AQ score....
