I would refer Dr Fatoohi to Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi's tafseer Tafhim Al Quran. This tafseer makes the very same observations that Dr Fatoohi has made about the historical context of the Hyksos kings ruling Egypt and when Yusuf (AS) was established in the land without prejudice as they were both Semitic people. The tafseer further deals with Pharaoh's fear of being driven out of the land by Musa (AS) and links this fear back to the period when Yusuf (AS) was in power when the Hyksos kings were ruling Egypt.

I pray to our One True Creator to guide us and our families and our brothers and sisters from Adam and Eve (peace be upon them both) to the truth. Ameen The One and Only True Eternal Living Creator says: (52. And We inspired Moses: “Travel with My servants by night. You will be followed.” 53. Pharaoh sent heralds to the cities. 54. “These are a small gang. 55. And they are enraging us. 56. But we are a vigilant multitude.” 57. So We drove them out of gardens and springs. 58. And treasures and noble dwellings. 59. So it was. And We made the Children of Israel inherit them. 60. And they pursued them at sunrise. 61. When the two groups sighted each other, the followers of Moses said, “We are being overtaken.” 62. He said, “No; my Lord is with me, He will guide me.” 63. We inspired Moses: “Strike the sea with your staff.” Whereupon it parted, and each part was like a huge hill. 64. And there We brought the others near. 65. And We saved Moses and those with him, all together. 66. Then We drowned the others. 67. In that there is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 68. Surely, your Lord is the Almighty, the Merciful.) Surah 26 ash-shuara ayah 52 to 68 from the Holy Quran the last testament revealed by our Creator Rabbuna Allah Almighty to the last of his prophets Muhammad (peace be upon them all) May our Beautiful Designer the Most High have mercy on us. From. 1:17:45 on “wa inna lajemee’un hatherun” can also be translated and also interperted as “and we are weary of all of them” meaning possibly “all Semits together” or the Jewish Slaves as a group. Salam dear Dr. Fatoohi. As you know, I have been watching your videos and reading some of your material but I had missed this video until now as I wrongly thought I had seen it. But I need to tell you that many years ago, I distinctly remember being confused why the Pharoah was telling magicians that they are plotting with Prophet Moses to drive them out of the city...I was confused why the word "city" was used when I read the translation. And I made a dua right then and there for some clarity to come out. And alhamdullilah it just came out. Louay, when you talk about "jamiun, hadhirun"....to support your argument further, the fact that Seti, the father of Ramesses II, was a general and had established Pir-Ramesses just a mere two kilometers away from the Israelites indicates invests "hadithirun" with this historic dimension when Ramesses II is saying "we are cautious..." he may be also including his father and of course himself as he then shifted the entire capital to the city just two km away.... Also "jamiun" also reminds me of Ramesses's concerns with his fights with the Hittites, other Semites, and others who he may worry the Israelites may make the "alliance" with. I also want to add that after seeing some of your material I have seen some parts of videos from the Egyptologist Dr. David Falk. Dr. Falk mentioned that when the Pharoah sent his charioteers after the Children of Israel, it wasn't to capture them as only the infantry had equipment like chains to do that...Dr. Falk said it was to kill a lot of them....and perhaps to capture some later with infantry to follow but mainly to kill or maim them.

What I understood was following: Joseph came during the time of Hyksos rule and established a monotheistic semite presence in Egypt that allied themselves with the Hyksos. Their presence particularly being felt in the area that would be Pi Ramses. The ancestors of Ramses conquered Egypt, expelled the Hyksos and enslaved their allies, therein the Israelites, and forced classical egyptian religion on them. When Moses came to demand the freedom of the Israelites, Ramses understood it as if Moses wanted to leave Egypt, gain strength in foreign allies and reconquer their homeland in Egypt, i.e. Pi Ramses, and reestablish an asiatic monotheistic kingdom on the nile delta. Thus him [Ramses] accusing Moses in plotting to take the land by using the excuse of just wanting to free his people and leave Egypt. If this is to be true, then this would explain the wierd plot written in the Bible (that being Moses apparantly trying to fool the pharao by saying he only needs the people for a few days). As the scribes must have been confused by pharaohs remarks, and bought into the accusations of pharaoh against Moses. And retold the story as if Moses actually was planning to reinvade egypt by lying to pharaoh that he only wanted the people out in the desert for a few days. This telling being even more confused in later works leading to what we now have in the bible. One detail i appreciate is that Moses is perportadly black in skin colour, something the Hyksos are also believed to be. I imagine this only worsened the xenophobia of Ramses as he would most likely be well aware of that fact. I could though be confusing the Hyksos with some other conquerors. I am not sure and Allah knows best.

Moses had a black skin colour ? how do we know this? I've heard Dr Omar Suleyman make this claim as well, based on ahadith. But I can only guess the Egyptian dynasties would have been fairly racist, so why would pharoah allow his wife to bring up a black skinned child in his household?
@jusuferg9945
@jusuferg9945 10 ай бұрын
@@sparephone8228 the Egyptians werent known to be rasist. In fact black colour in itself ment prosperity and wealth, and for a time their pharohs were black too. They did though, as people do, have reservatioans about foreigners, and looked down on them. I only brought the skin colour of Moses as it might have reminded Ramses of the Hyksos. Again I am hard pressed as to find if they were also black. Tried to find sources on that but failed so you dont have to believe me on this account. Just take it as a possibility.

Dr Louay has made a cogent argument for his interpretation and I tend to agree with him. For my part, I thought that the Pharaoh was worried that Moses would lead an uprising/rebellion of the jews and topple the Pharaoh and his ruling class. However, some would say that the jewish slaves would not even dream of overcoming the Pharaoh's army and its people. Therefore, the fear of the Pharaoh that the fleeing jews would form an alliance with the descendants of the alien Hyskos appears to be a better hypothesis.

Two points : 1- The stories of Moses and Joseph are parallel and linked in the Quran (Check Nouman Ali Khan video). So maybe Pharaoh was warning the Egyptian elite that they would lose their land again as what happened at the time of Joseph. 2- The Quran mentions that the Israelites took the treasures and lands of Pharaoh in 26:59 and 44:28, i.e., what Pharaoh warned against did come true probably at the time of King Solomon (peace be upon him).

Joseph ben Jacob and Yeshua ben Miriam are most strongly linked, there is an extra link through Moses ben Amram. S12:56, Genesis 46:31-34, 47:11-22. S26:52, 59, 44:17, 28 = Mosaic covenant, Numbers 34:1-12.

I have a possible explanation: Moses was sent to Pharaoh with a dual mission - to proclaim the existence of the one true God and to secure the freedom of the Children of Israel. During the time of Joseph, the Children of Israel held respected social and economic positions in Egypt. The liberation may have been not only about freeing them from Pharaoh's rule but also about returning them to their ancestral city, Avaris. The Exodus, consequently, may not have been the primary objective but rather a consequence of Pharaoh's intentions to eliminate the small number of believers who followed Moses (peace be upon him). I also think that that Israel (peace be upon him, who was a prophet and the son and grandson of prophets) might not have left the so-called promised land of Ibrahim if there had been a command from Ibrahim himself to settle in Egypt.

I can see it makes sense that Pharaoh was talking about the Israelites expelling Egyptians out of the land they were returning to if indeed the Egyptians were occupying it at the time.

There is also a date that the Old Testament suggest when the exodus happened. This is in 1 Kings 6 which states “In the four hundred and eightieth[a] year after the Israelites came out of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, the second month, he began to build the temple of the Lord” Scholars generally agree that the construction of the temple of Solomon started around 960BC and if you add 480 lunar years or 465 Gregorian years to 960, you will arrive to 1425BC. Why lunar years because the old Hebrew calendar is lunar based just like the Muslim calendar and I believe the unisolar Gregorian calendar was only adopted later. Interestingly 1425BC coincides with the demise of Thutmoses iii based on the Egyptian chronology. The Old Testament is silent when it comes to the fate of pharaoh but the Quran is very specific in that pharaoh died together with his troops in the Red Sea. Thutmoses iii is a warrior pharaoh also known as the Napoleon of Egypt. In fact he invaded Palestine and in the battle at Megiddo defeated the Canaanites. He was also the first ruler of Egypt that used the term pharaoh for himself. Prior to this the rulers were just called kings and pharaoh refers to the Great or high house. Perhaps this is what is referred to in the Quran in Surah naziat 79:24 where pharaoh said “I am your lord Most High” when he assumed the term pharaoh for himself.

Thank you Paul for bringing up historical evidence from the Quran. Yes. Why would Pharaoh reject Moses request to exit Egypt with his people. Then, claim this is going to make him lose power. Moses came prior to King David and King Solomon. Pharaoh apprehension was correct. However, doctor Louay interpretation of 'Jami un hadhirun' is not convincing at all. The way i understand it is 'we are unified and alert'. - unity is in conjunction with disorganised. Alert is in conjunction with small. He was trying to rationalize. This is after the wizards fell down in prostration to Allah miracles.

The word "jami'" here contrasts the word "shirthima" and explains what Pharoah and his chiefs were apprehensive about. It is that those "shirthima" would become a "jami'". The latter not only means "gathering/alliance", but also "army". I'rab should not proceed from this understanding, not the other way around.

The conclusion on the pharaoh of the exodus is based on the assumption that there is only one pharaoh whereas in the Old Testament it mentions a few pharaohs. If you look at the verse you quoted قَالَ أَلَمْ نُرَبِّكَ فِينَا وَلِيدًا وَلَبِثْتَ فِينَا مِنْ عُمُرِكَ سِنِينَ He said, "Did we not raise you as a child, and did you live among us for years of your life?" Dr, I think the using of the word “We” and “us” in the Quran has significant implications because it denotes plurality or a number of pharaohs rather than a single person. If it were one pharaoh then using the word “I” would have profound and deep implication and will accentuate the point to Musa AS because he was the one that raised Musa in the palace. But rather the word “We” is used in the Quran. It can be very easily concluded that the pharaoh that Musa AS faced upon return to Egypt from Madyan was using the plural word “We and us”and he is referring to him and the pharaohs before him. For example, if it was Thutmoses iii that Moses was facing and Moses grew up in the court of Thutmoses ii who is the father of Thutmoses iii, then there is nothing wrong for him to say “Didn’t we raise you as a child and you lived amongst us”. In fact if your claim is true that there is only one pharaoh, then the verse would read “Didn’t I raise you as a child and you lived with me”. Then it would be conclusive that the pharaoh is only one pharaoh and it is a direct message from the pharaoh that raised him and lived with him in the royal palace. The Quran didn’t say that and by using “we and us” the Quran implies that there are more than one pharaoh involved.

This discussion shows we first let the Quran to do the interpretation first before lookinto somewhere else. If we do the same then, interpretaiton of the Quran 4, tweet 171 should be like this ( sultan-bin-intepretation), Quran Chapter 4, tweet 171: O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His term [of repeating creation of Adam, Quran 30:11, 10:34, 85:13 through female-male-female gender alteration]; He conveyed His term to Mary [by angels Quran 3:42,45] and [by] a spirit from Him [Quran 19:17-21, messenger Gabriel]. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.

Assalam alaikum , concerning the word “la jamee’un” i’d disagree with the respected doctor because if it was meant for the second meaning which it’s “a crowd or alliance” it would have been “Li Jamee’in”. So in that meaning it would be for “all of us” . Regards

Wa’alaykum al-salam. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Other viewers have also objected to my reading of the text claiming that it requires "la" to be "li" or "jami’un" to be "jami'an". Both assumptions are unnecessary. I read the whole nominal sentence "jami’un hathirun" as the subject of the emphasis of the "la", i.e. "lam al-tawkid". Furthermore, there is a serious weakness in meaning reading “jami’un” as referring to the Egyptians. For instance, what does it mean for Group A to be “cautious” of Group B yet it sets out to fight Group B to the death? There are other, more technical issues with the meaning with reading “jami’un” to refer to the Egyptians.
