I need to fertilize my lawn this summer. I've got dead weeds. I've got a couple other things that need to be dealt with. Sometimes in lawn care you have to go backwards to move forwards. And in this case, a summer bermudagrass scalp was the only solution for my issues. You'll hear some people call it a height of cut (HOC) reset for a bermuda lawn. In this video, we'll discuss why I went ahead and did one after planning not to.

Very fortunate to have neighbors who for the most part care for their lawns. We just came off a pretty solid week of rain last week, so the hood greened up fast. It was really brown before that. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I just threw down some high nitrogen fertilizer with 5% iron, and also raised my hoc from 3/4" to 1" on my CT. This 100+ degree heat with no rain is tough in north Texas. I'll miss the shorter hoc, but the grass will look better for it. I'll start next season with a 1/2" hoc!

I currently cut my bermuda with Honda rotary mower with the 2 setting weekly. I REALLY wanna take it down to 1 because like you, i’m seeing tan under the green canopy. And it’s thin in some areas so that may promote more horizontal growth. Then again, maybe I’ll experiment with a small area first. haha. Thanks for all the tips!

Have been watching all your videos related to new sod and goals for watering, and have a question for you. Do you think there could be any benefit to laying peat moss on-top of new fresh sod? @budgetlawns
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns Жыл бұрын
I don't say never often, but I will never use peat moss. Never. I've heard positive things and I've heard negative things about it. For bermuda grass, it's just unnecessary for me. Other than that, I don't know enough about it to tell you whether it'd be good or not. I've never dug into it, because I'll never use it. Not a budget lawn care step if ya ask me. Question for you good sir. Do you not like clover in the lawn because it looks bad mixed with the Bermuda? I was considering planting some clover in my back lawn mixed with some grass because I’ve read clover provides excellent fertilizer/nitrogen when it grows with grass.
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns Жыл бұрын
You're right. Clover has a lot of advantages, nitrogen fixation being one of them. I've actually considered having parts of the lawn be clover but went against it. I like it, but I like the bermuda better. And I like it better without the clover in it. For me, it was just one or the other. Hope this answers your question. Thanks so much for watching.

@@BudgetLawns I gotcha! I was just curious, and yes sir that sure did! Worried about burning your grass with the fertilizer or will it not matter since you scalped it?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns Жыл бұрын
Not really worried about burning. I’ve just had some spots get discolored in the past from what I’m thinking was the fertilizer not being able to get down into the canopy and staying on top instead. Figured since I need to fert, might as well scalp it too. Not a necessary step though. Thanks bud.

They mow once a week, maybe twice. That's about it. Rain works wonders. I'm lucky to have neighbors who, for the most part, take care of their lawns. Should have seen these before we got rain over the last two weeks. They were all crispy brown. Sometimes good from far, but far from good is more than good enough. On hybrid bermuda grass, a little water, a weekly cut, and some green weeds mixed in will still result in a good lawn unless you're right on top inspecting it.
