A swan on a glass roof, what could go wrong?!

Just two days after Simon completed, what we hope, was his last chemotherapy session, we received a slightly peculiar call for a swan that appeared to be stuck on a glass roof!
With his 40 years of rescue experience, we knew his knowledge and expertise would be vital in this kind of a rescue!
Due to the ongoing risk of Avian Influenza, specifically in water birds, our dedicated vet Meriem attended to not only assess the bird but also do all the heavy lifting!

I didn't know that either. I was wondering why they would need to rescue the swan but then when they said that, it all made sense.

Some species of bats can't take off from the ground either. They need to accelerate from a high point (highly elevated box, tree, fassade, balcony) by sinking/diving some meters down. They are lost on the ground. Like an airplane without engine - it can glide and use its potential energy, but it couldn't take off.

That's because swans are on the upper weight limit of flight, which is why they need a running start in order to fly. They also have very stubby legs for their size.

Well, you learn something everyday; swans need a runway like aeroplanes, but most birds can just do a vertical takeoff like helicopters. BTW. Great rescue team, nice one.

❤❤ Job well done! Thank you for bringing us this delightful story of The Perfect Swan. Surprised when you told us that they landed on the puddles because of the reflection And cannot take off in flight without standing. They land on roadways in low light conditions or even good light if the road is wet.

I didn't know that they couldn't take off from standing, or misinterpret shiny surfaces as water! Glad the swan could go right back into the water, the happy tail wags and dipping of it's beak in tells all. Thank you for rescuing it! It was very calm, almost as if it knew you were there to help

Aside from gulls. jackdaws, magpies and pigeons, we seem to have lost the majority of birds where I live. Even the starling population had deeply dropped ! It will be interesting to see what the goose season will bring.

That swan was thirsty, poor thing. I had no idea skylights could be a hazard for them. I'll definitely try to remember that in case I see something like this in the future. Great job, everyone!

This was delightful, loved the silly shennanigans in the beginning. ^^ Good to see everyone in good spirits. Poor swan, but at least it wasn't a road. Well done on the rescue as always. :) How did Miriem asses the swan before catching? Did she look at video, or asses from a distance? Are the signs of bird flu easy to spot? Wish you all well. They can take off from land, but need a really good run up, they are the jumbo jets of the bird world!

Good job ya'll . Our Swans are creatures of the water if they are on land its mostly for nesting & reproduction reasons and partial foraging but if a single Swan remains on land for long periods of time & skipping time with the group and family there is most definitely a red flag to investigate and hopefully correct its blessed existence in our presence in this kaotic world of confusion.

il cigno rimesso nel fiume si è messo a bere ... poverino ... ma non gli avevano dato da bere prim ? chissà da quanto tempo era su quel tetto senza bere un po' d'acqua

Mi sa che il tetto di vetro era bello bagnato dalla pioggia e quindi ci sarebbe stato un po’ d’acqua disponibile. In generale, però, un animale stressato non berrà subito, e quindi anche se gli avessero offerto dell’acqua, probabilmente non l’avrebbe accettato prima di stare tranquillo sul lago 🙂
