The defeat in the Battle of Poltava had shattered the Swedish Army of King Charles XII. Retreating south into the territory of the Ottoman Empire, the "Northern Paladin" becomes the honored guest of the Sultan. But Charles XII. is restless. Despite the comforts and luxury, he enjoys at the fortress of Bender, the King yearns for a chance to regain the initiative. More and more he gets involved in Ottoman politics, urging the High Porte to renew its enmities with the Russian Tsar. But even a famous King has to learn that hospitality has its limits.

A point. "Fixture" would be a better translation for Karl XII's nickname in Turkish "Demirbaş". Even though its literal translation is indeed "iron head", "demirbaş" means immoveable inventory stock in Turkish. They called him "Demirbaş" since he refused to leave the castle on his own.

I don't understand why would anyone think that Sabaton glorifies war. I mean, if you listen to the lyrics, you have to admit that it is DEFINITELY NOT about how great war is. Well, now it makes me think that maybe people don't care about the lyrics but they know something like "it's about war" - and with this little knowledge they just hear EPIC music and this makes them think that if the music about war is so amazing, it must be glorifying it. .... nope, it still doesn't make sense. By the way - yes, my heart is now broken forever, thanks Indy!

@@silverphoenix111 Yup. But Tolkien did have a large chunk made already, which he had been working on over the years. I think his son just had to make an ending for the book (aside from all the editing he had to do). Fantastic book.

@@TheOneBearded yes it is fantastic. I think that Tolkien wanted to do an individual book for each the three main stories (Beren and Luthien, Children of Hurin and the fall of Gondolin) but I am not sure.

@@silverphoenix111 I wouldn't be surprised. The Silmarillion is a collection of stories, but not all of them are that connected to each other. You could read the Children of Hurin and be fine not knowing about what Melkor/Morgoth did or Feanor. That's probably why some ppl didn't like it as much. The book isn't written as a single narrative with a singular goal like his other two works. Honestly, it why I like it more. It fleshes out the setting.

As a veteran of OIF I appreciate the work Sabaton does in not only recording the history of war through music, but in communicating its bloody and terrible reality. I would not call Sabaton pro war at all; pro soldiers as human beings though, yes.

The ousting of Karl XII is called "Kalabaliken i Bender" in Swedish. Kalabalik is a Turkish word that means 'crowded'. In Swedish it means 'confusion' or 'great unrest'.

About "Osnabrück". Iam a born german who lived his whole life here and i can say one thing: Its one of those citys, even the most germans know it only by the traffic jam report in the radio. "Zwischen Osnabrück-Hafen und Kreuz Lotte-Osnabrück, 3 KM Stau in Richtung Münster nach einem Unfall."

Re: appreciating the books you were forced to read in school as you age: I really wish that teachers would explain why they chose those books. Even if you still don't like them, you at least would know there was a purpose to having to read them. I still don't like the vast majority of what I read back then, but I now appreciate that they increased my vocabulary and ability to use English. There is a trend now in American public schools to diversify reading assignments, in part to make it easier for kids to connect with and enjoy books more. (Side note: one of the high schools in the town I work in had The Hobbit as one of the choices for English IV College Prep summer reading this past summer, and have had it on that list for a few years now if I remember correctly. At least that teacher picked an easy to find book...)

Kind of sad that they skipped the last part of Karl XIs reign, there's less war but much other interesting stuff like a witch hysteria, and a massive famine in the 1690s, that killed huge chunks of the population just before the great northern war.

Can we just take a moment and realise how fucked the Russians would have been if there was an actual Swedish-Ottoman alliance invading Russia. Charles gathered around 40.000 men for his eventual invasion I believe, than take into account that the Ottomans could muster upwards of 100.000 men. if they would be able to join forces you'd quickly have an army of around 150.000 marching on Moscow. With the Ottoman numbers and Caroleans as shock troops Peter would have the odds stacked against him. p.s. cue 0:08 for triumphant entry into Moscow
