Sabaton History

3 жыл бұрын

It was a time of religion and war. Legends tell the tale of a mighty Swedish King, a Lion from the North, who arrived in the German Empire with a mighty host to save Protestantism. Beyond the legends, Gustavus Adolphus was a warrior king who sought to create a Swedish empire through hegemony on the Baltic Sea. Once, Sweden's involvement in the 30 Years War had begun out of sheer necessity, but soon send her armies on a path of glory and fame. But would this path lead the Swedish King to victory or his inevitable demise?

Picture this: Indy, Joakim and Tommy sitting in the beginning of the video, but for some reason, Joakim is knocked out while Indy and Tommy introduces themselves. Joakim wakes up and wonder why he’s chained to the chair. And the reason is because Joakim refuses to do a episode on Swedish Pagans so the crew were forced to drug him. And why is Tommy there? Well, it’s because he want to talk about the greatness that is Swedish Pagans and he want Joakim to listen to him so he can convert him into loving the song. That would be a great setup for a Swedish Pagans episode

At one Sabaton concert I went to in America (MD) the crowd started chanting "one more beer" in German. This so surprised Joakim that it prompted him to tell a joke: "What do you call someone who speaks two languages?" "Bilingual." What do you call someone who speaks three languages?" "Trilingual." "What do you call someone who speaks one language?" "American." As an American who has tried to learn several languages but has not become fluent, I thought it was funny. :-)

One of my favorite books is a historical fiction story that takes place in this time period. "The Lion of the North, a tale of the times of Gustavus Adophus," by G. A. Henty. The main character is a young Scott that joins the Green Brigade of Gustavus in the 30 Years War. Henty wrote many Historical fiction books in the late 19th century for the boys of England. I love to read or listen to them. If you want a book that gives you the history of the war and give you a good story at the same time, then I would recommend that you read it.

I think one of the issues with the language barriers here in the United States is unlike Europe we are not directly exposed to so many different languages being we are clear on the other side of the world bordered by countries that speak primarily English and Spanish. Where as in Europe you have a ton of different countries and languages packed together so tightly making the need or want to learn a second or third language a bigger deal. I personally, being someone who lives in America, love to hear songs in other languages. I listen to for example Rammstein and love their music and songs even if it is in German. Just makes me look up the lyrics so I can start to understand the songs and even learn some basic German in the process

It would be interesting to have an episode about Albrecht von Wallenstein, as he was one of the most fascinating characters of the war and a seriously interesting story of a rags to riches ascent.

This is probably my favorite song from the album, and it got me interested in doing some of my own research on it and after that i was somewhat amazed because. I thought the story of his daughter was as interesting or even more interesting than his own story.

One of my favorite anecdotes about him was an Italian mercenary working in his army. He was paid to kill him. This man having no allegiance to Gustavus and on multiple occasions leveling his pistol at the king said he could not bring himself to kill such a man. Such was Gustavus' charisma and self-confidence. Thomas Roe said of him "I hope more of the King of Sweeden's own person than of all his country ... he is all and worth all" He also said, "He thinks the ship cannot sink that carries him". Such a level of self-confidence is infectious. It is no wonder his death at the Battle of Lutzen hit the Swedish military so hard.

I know I'm probably in a small majority here, but if Sabaton did a US tour singing only in Swedish I would love it. Do I understand Swedish? Heck no, but you bet your ass I'd still be excited for it. Hell, like 60% of the bands I listen to sing in a language I don't understand and I still love it.

Perspectives in history are a funny thing. Gustavus Adolphus known to most of Europe as "Lion of the North" in Poland was known as... "Swedish Herring"... and wasn't thought to be particularly impressive.

Has anyone here read the novel 1632 by Eric Flint? It is a sort-of science fiction novel where the fictional town of Grantville, West Virginia is somehow transported to some province of Germany during the Thirty Years War. Gustavus Adolphus figures heavily in the novel and its sequels, and he is made out to be an absolute lion of a man with no reservations at all about adopting new technology and tactics.

I remember the first time I saw Sabaton, it was in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2017. You guys gave us the choice of singing either "Poltava" or "Gott Mit Uns", and then in English or Swedish. The whole audience wanted "Gott Mit Uns" in Swedish and Joakim was like, "What the fuck? You guys been practicing your Swedish?"
