Melville wrote about the Peaquod, Faber wrote about the Mytonia, Hornblower cleansed the world's oceans of pirates and all of the King's enemies, our brave crew just wandered up and down Benfleet Creek. (Those of you who want to might look at Google Maps, search for 'SS7 1NF' and let your eyes drift south a bit.

I'm not a boat guy, but I enjoyed the story... and very relatable to some of my own adventures with friends long gone. It's funny how people cycle in and out of our lives.

That may have to be the next tale from the boatyard, Stan and his bicycle, or Norman and his even Bob and his. Cycles... The story was much more fun to have lived through it than just to have heard it.

Fine details, there's the rub.

The Mytonia was not the Oriskany, but on one turn she handled rather like her. We managed to avoid going aground, but she was a boat that liked straight running. There was quite a chop on the creek that day, but she was a heavily built boat and she didn't pitch or roll.

Lovely! This vignette made me think of watching all the myriad of boats out on the briny estuary ( I think of it as sea but I get corrected when I utter that in polite company 🥹) There was a certain boat I used to swim out to, merely as a marker on warm summer mornings. No boat trips like yours though…and certainly no boat repairs/renovations. A good tale, Harry, thanks 😀

Ah, yes, Leigh on Sea is technically 'Leigh on Thames Estuary'. The 'sea' starts, I am told, at the Crowstone, at Westcliff.

An enjoyable insight into times of yore. I bet you've got more of those writings tucked away..?

Most of them haven't been written yet! I really do need to get all the 'Bob the Burglar' stories down.

What are the chances? In a couple of hours I'm about to embark on the walk from Benfleet creek to Leigh old town.

A lovely walk, but look at all those boats, some of them have more history than all the museums in London!
