Today, we're going to take a look at two very interesting knives, made four years apart: the Grimsmo Knives Norseman #821, and a much earlier model, my buddy Sid's #137 with carbon fiber inlays. Here, we'll do a thorough comparison, inside and out.

You had Erik and I howling when you said "maybe they weren't proud that they were made in Canada until this point"! So funny, I'm still giggling. Fantastic review Nick, I really appreciate it! I can think of at least 3 more semi-noticeable improvements and a ton of invisible ones, but you really nailed it. As Sid mentioned below, the action of the two should feel different, with the older one being a bit spongier and the new one being much crisper. See you at Blade Show 2018!

JohnGrimsmo Neat! Yeah, I noticed the difference in action, but didn't comment just because it's hard to tell if that's one knife, or an early late thing. But mine is definitely more crispy. Thanks for the comment.

OUTSTANDING VIDEO NICK!!! And what a Very Sweet #821... Could think of NO ONE better suited (except perhaps John and Erik themselves) to do this detailed, insightful Norseman generational comparison. Extremely grateful for all the time, effort, and details you put into this (and you discovered/uncovered!) - not counting your disassemblies and maintenance on my favorite Grimsmo/knife, #137, as well as your previous live-steam comparison of it with your #821 on Instagram. I'd like to add/echo your live Instagram mention last week that 137 has a softer detent/less lock-bar tension, for a seemingly smoother deployment. I can also say this about my #104 as well, although it's not quite as buttery as 137 after you tuned-up the latter. But now that I own 12 Norsemen (13 if I count my former and now your current #821), I can comfortably say that the early one’s (assuming those before 104 and 137 are similar) are even easier (which is saying a lot) to deploy and arguably have overall smoother action. *My perception/opinion of course - would love to read the opinions of other Norseman owners)*. Also, John had mentioned in an IG comment to me that the bottom front edge tip (‘Yokote’) varies in pointedness/roundness, as Erik’s sharpening skills were perfected over the course of productions. 137 has a very similar Yokote to my unused #104, so it should have its original geometry at this area of the blade, despite a previous sharpening or two. THANK YOU and KUDOS to you for this comparison study video from a true fan of the Brand and of course your Brilliant Channel. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 Thanks Nick, -Sid

Nick, great video. I just received my second Norseman, the first is 062 the second 1181. There are nice upgrades to the newer Norseman. A lot I didn’t notice until you pointed them out. However, I think the addition of the second stop pin causes that “bounce” when closing the blade. My old beat up Norseman drops faster and smoother, which is probably from being broken in, but does not bounce back at all.

Nice comparison. All fairly subtle to most of us. I had a 600 and an 800 series and missed most of the differences. I'm hoping to get a 1000 series as well to try the detent ramp. How many times can I buy the same knife and not carry it? I guess time will tell. (Grimsmo Bros, more Rasks please.) Shame that somebody sharpened off that wide point on the 100 series. For me that's one of the big benefits of the blade shape.

Just got me one. Honeycomb blue. One damn beautiful gorgeous knife. I have so many, many regular knife types, finally I found one that is unique, and perfect for the type of rope cutting I do soooo much of at work. I plan on using mine. Love, love recurves, and even took my old sebenza and put a recurve on it, because once I found out how much better a recurve cuts for the slicing I do, It seemed stupid to keep that regular straight edge on it. Such a beautiful knife.

Hi Nick I’ve been enjoying your reviews for several months now but I’m curious in most knives it seems you prefer a blade that is more straight and would cut flush to The surface. Both of these blades seem to curl up when you have a pocket pecker which brings the knife blade even further up. Is this a specialty knife or an edc That defies your usual standards. Thank you

You want the lockbar to contact in only one small place so it doesn't have lock stick. Although it seems like it contacts the whole way it doesn't .And this doesn't affect the strength.

man, this thing is interesting, but it's giving me the Tom Brown Trapper vibe. ie there's a lot of knife that I just wouldn't know what to do with. I get the long chopping bit and a knife is not a knife without a pointy end, but I've never been wild about sudden changes in blade direction eg tantos. the machining is pretty amazing though.

What would you pay for one of these. Please be realistic. Yes I agree. 950us for a Canadian made knife is high especially with the conversion factor. Sure they spent many hours on them but now over the years, the machines do the work. This should have lowered cost over time and increased efficiency.

Handmade products are almost bound to change/evolve over time and have a little variety from batch to batch, or even piece to piece. There is also some variation in the raw materials and components. I’ve been a scientific glass blower and fabricator for the past 15 years and basically the foremen of my current shop.. while I totally work out dimensions and tolerances for every product, pretty tight tolerances at that (at least for glass), I can pull out an old piece and know instantly who made it.. same for pieces that come in for repair. It just is what it is and and of the charms of handmade products. There’s always gonna be small variations in one person’s work to another.. there’s no mold for these things.. just materials, a lathe, torches and a small assortment of tools.

I've only had my KJ clone for a month or so now, but I'd bet a decent amount of money on it actually being M390. Sure as hell wears, sharpens, and takes a polish exactly like M390. They dont really have any incentive to lie about it, in my opinion. If they were gonna lie, they could just mark the blade RWL34 then use 8cr, or whatever else. Instead, the blade is marked M390.

I feel like I'm committing blasphemy for not 'bending the knee' at the Grimsmo altar, but dare I ask what purpose this blade shape serves? I see a beautifully constructed, but massively overpriced builders/painter-decorator tool. Is it a skinning knife? Carving knife? Or just John and Erik Grimsmo laughing their asses off that the general public are gullible enough to invest in the old/new crisp/spongy mystique? Emperors New Clothes? Definately.
