Shadow and Bone is an engaging show.
After Shadow and Bone's first season, I was extremely excited to find out where the story went from there as it seemed to have tremendous potential. And at times throughout its second season, it reaches that potential, showing glimpses of brilliance. Unfortunately, the other half of the time, it falls flat, leaving the viewer with whiplash due to the uneven quality of the show. Some of the storylines are fantastic while others are disappointing. It really feels like it is two shows crammed into one. Hopefully, moving into future seasons, the writers manage to give each storyline the space they need.

I agree with at least 99% of this tbh. And it's not just because I like the Crows better as characters, it's that their scenes felt like more effort was put into them. And the plots were more interesting. The pacing also never felt dragged out, where to me the Alina side of things felt primarily like a good nap time I will say that the jurda parem set up was actually really cool as that plotline is how the six of crows book starts out, and it includes several other important storylines for the crows - I think it just comes across.. differently?? Less important?? If you're a show-only fan (I have no idea if it's mentioned at all in the shadow & bone books as i have not read them) If they do get a season 3 I hope they're able to make it at least as interesting as this season, if not more so, but that's it. Going in with average level hopes means it won't be disappointing and it can just be enjoyed for what it is lol. If we get a Crows spinoff however my hopes will be sky high because of how good their content was in Shadow & Bone

I nodded a lot in agreement and giggled a couple of times, well done. Just hoping for a Six of Crows spinoff now.

I pretty much agree with everything you said. But I am looking forward to season 3, this show has a lot of potential.

Letting Albie live worked in the books because it was the last storyline and Pekka didn't get a chance to come back from it. And to quote Kaz "I would only get to kill his son once". Turns out planting the threat was more effective. So yeah, that really should have been a season finale thing. Great acting though. What did you think of the romances?

I agree with most of what you said. It feels like it was written with the uncertainty of whether they'd get a Season 3 to tell the story, such that everything had to be crammed in and rushed. Alina's story this season easily could have been told over two seasons, possibly even three. But, the way it is, it feels like they had to get everything done in one. Huge shame. Like, it's amazing to me that a scene as good as the one with Inej and Kaz in the chapel at the end of the season happened between them and not Alina and Mal. The latter pair are supposed to be the main protagonists with the deepest emotional core, none of their scenes felt like they were allowed to breathe, or that the actors were allowed to fill space and fully occupy a moment the way the Crows often get to.

Especially when you consider the part of the story that they did of the Crows was kind of a harder read in the second book because we didn't really get a Kaz pov. I worried about the Shadow and Bones part going in because it wasn't as good and even explaining the story to someone you skip forward to King of Scars.

3:23 THANK YOU!!!! THAT RETCON BOTHERED ME SO MUCH! Anyone who watches s1 would remember that Dresden k-lled Alexei because he wanted for NO ONE to know what/who could allow him to cross the fold and become filthy rich

a very nice video! i agree with pretty much everything you said, the alina parts are so boring and the crows shu han arc falls very flat compared to the katterdam arc.

lmao i feel like every complimentary thing you said about the show and what works, came straight out of the book (for the most part)

honestly (and i've not read the books) but the crows were so much more interesting bcs the other "chosen one", "light vs dark" arc just feels SO overdone. In the first season anyway the concept of the hiest and gang in the fantasy world setting was just so much more INTERESTING and it kept that way into season two. I think more people need to do more things with fantasy settings instead of just the classic good vs evil fight bcs its getting boring

I wish the crow ketterdam plot was the entirety of this season too. Let them reunite with Alina in season 3 instead of rushing. Overall I loved season one and felt like this one ruined everything. I really don’t like any of the scattered cliche cliffhangers they left us with. Alina just didn’t seem true to character and the strength of the magic system seemed way too wishwashy. How was the dark one so much stronger than a 2 amplifier Alina when she rivaled him in season 1

As a fan of the books I was very disappointed. So many elements of the books were included far too early and the ending of the season betrays the very message of the original trilogy. I thought season 1 was great and overall quite a faithful adaptation. Not sure what possessed the show runners this time around lol

No trilogy fans liked s2, Only the crow fans, and by how the scripts were written we can tell the writers hated the trilogy and loved the crows. Their dismissal of S&S and R&R and removing so many key elements of the trilogy is what made s2 sink

22:27 Baghra showing up in the tether was such a retcon from the books. The writers really just hated the darkling's character. The tether was suppose to be exactly like the dyad Reylo bond. He was able to visit Alina whenever she called him (even if she just called him subconsciously). The writers were dead set on removing "all undertones of darklina" (jml podcast interview) and by doing so they removed an important layer from Alina's character. Putting Baghra in the tether was a cop-out, and a way to spit on the fans who loved the books

I mostly agree with your Video and finds that Mal and Alina are pretty boring , though they are spening time with each other kissing and making out, they never goves a lover vibes but rather Siblings That's why I like The Darkling and Alina together more, at least their scene made me feels something but yeah, they cut most of The Darkling and Alina's part from the books

Plus, in the end everything that the darkling are trying to told and warned her are proven to be right, so if they're making Season 3 and The Darkling ger resurrected, maybe Alina will be more thoutful and less blind hatred

Shadow & Bone i wish that ORIGINAL ALINA [ both books & tv series , ] had more substance as a character & a protagonist , its just that ALINA is a very bland , annoying & boring character for me. seriously it's almost painful how uninteresting ALINA is. i want to like her but i just can't. as for MAL in the books , MAL actually gets it worst because he's both an ASSHOLE & a satellite love interest. in the tv series MAL is a hollow character because the writers took away his ASSHOLE traits but didn't fill the gaps in his character with anything of substance , plus he's still a satellite love interest which is a new low for a main character to sink too. i don't know why the original author LEIGH BARDUGO didn't merge MAL & ALINA characters into one character. the original trilogy would have been more intriguing & entertaining that way i think. because the plotline for the first trilogy is awesome. the GRISHA VERSE is fascinating & brilliant but the first trilogy is not fun , which in large part is the original author fault because ALINA is such a dull & depressing character. i apologize if you like ALINA or MAL but i stand by what i said. i know the original author was new when the first trilogy came out , so i understand but how do you make such a magnificent & amazing world & world building & than write such a dour & annoying protagonist. it boggles the mind. ALINA & MAL suck as protagonists. It just blows my mind that LEIGH BARDUGO the AUTHOR who wrote ALINA & MAL , also wrote KAZ , NINA & NIKOLAI [ they are AWESOME ] , plus the others

You are spot on about Mal - he dragged the show down. It would have been much better, and her anger would have been more fitting, if Mal had perished in the end of s1. Mal was a boring character in the books AND in the show

Well, bones carry the best stemcells. Semen carries the affinity for stemcells, that’s literally their only purpose, so if Alina got a fertilized eggcell out of that sex scene, that might have been the amplification fusion thing. Disclaimer: Bio is not my field I haven’t read the trilogy.

19:53 the weird vasiliy in s2 was very poorly written. He was a fool in the books, but at least that showed how flawed the Lantsov line was. Instead of digging into politics, like Game of Thrones, s2 writers wanted to find the fastest, laziest way to wrap things up. They went so far as recasting the Disney Prince looking Vasily from s1 to hiring the creep looking dude for s2
@ullamorozova

The only disagreement I have with this review is saying it's better than s1 and giving it a 7. It's a 5 not a 7. The rushed writing, disjointed plots, too many characters, and overall bloated season dragged it down
