Now you are just missing the double bottle attachment to allow for hot swapping coolant bottles without disruption of coolant flow. You should put a ball valve on the inlet of the bottle to allow you to shut off air flow in case you run into the situation of running out of coolant mid cut again. That way you can leave the air on and swap bottles with basic air coolant. This is going on the list of projects for my someday shop.

I did some science fair stuff at an elementary school with soda bottle rockets. It's amazing how strong those bottles are. I pumped them over 100 psi several times without issue. And when they do fail it's a ductile failure. If you needed a higher pressure rating you should use a 1L bottle since it uses the same preforms I think as a 2L so the wall is thicker.
@PracticalRenaissance

I believe it! The bottles need to be able to take a surprisingly high pressure just to hold soda, and I’ve found that I only hit about 20 psi max with this setup

Solved the problem of the soda bottle threat the easy not so elegant way... I took the cap and made a very big hole in it nearly all the diameter size the top has and epoxyd the rest with the threat into the block. Was done in 5 min and works since nearly 2 years without problem but I would have preferred your elegant way but had too less experience in threats that time to try it. Changing the bottle so is a fast and comfortable way getting new coolant...with time and experience you can minimize the coolant more and more today a bottle last 3-4 times longer than 2 years ago it doesn't need much to have the same result...

Nice work. I built almost the exact setup except I got a used garden sprayer, 3 gallon I think, at Restore, the Habitat for Humanity store for used building supplies ($5.00) and used a 120VAC solenoid to goose it into operation.

For the soda bottle thread, i just took the cap that comes wt the bottle and epoxy-ed it into a hole large enough to accept it's diameter- and obviously drilled out the cap for fluid to pass. Make the hole deep enough, it can't be seen, so the aesthetics don't suffer too much.

Now you got to find a way to catch the coolant so you aren't burning through a bottle or two per part
@PracticalRenaissance
@PracticalRenaissance 6 жыл бұрын
If I were running a flood setup, definitely, but with the flow dialed in there’s hardly enough to catch and I’d likely have to set up some sort of enclosure so until then I’ll just spend the coolant

Looks great and if it works even better, i have watched many videos on this subject and most are all the same, they miss out what you do with the used coolant, ie where does it go? how do you recolect it and filter for reuse, i'm sure you don't let it run off the table and run across the floor to a drain.

the problem is sooo many water around after 1 hour of work. even very tight level 1 liter coolant is on the machine and floor. For exmaple manule hand pump work very well. I spray one "pıısstt" in every 20 second. and it is enough. and it evaporarates. but I need my hand of course.

Cool but when threading into a blind hole have you tried running the lathe in reverse and threading on the back side from the blind end toward the open end? Joe Pieczynski made a good video on this .

Trying to figure out how to secure a chuck on a spindle thread without messing up the threads or reference surfaces. Maybe run a drawbar through the spindle and thread it into a plug on the right side of the chuck?

Something that's been confusing me. If the air blows the chips away, won't the lube cause them to stick and NOT get blown away? I really couldn't even see chips on your video with the coolant on, so I assume air with coolant, still blows them away efficiently.

This is my second time viewing the video. I am seriously thinking about making one for my mill. One question I have though, what is the approx air pressure you have coming into the system? I am wondering if I will have to plumb air from my big compressor to the mill or if I can use a smaller one that I can locate in the dead space between my mill and lathe. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I think they are called soda bottle caps lmao and I was wondering why he didn't just epoxy one directly into the block... By the way, when he put the o ring and started worrying about being the correct one for the application I was like duuuuuude, you just used a pop bottle. (I'm not criticizing because I am going to do exactly that in the future)

Good video, however, I'm pretty sure you are using way too much coolant. I use a similar Kool mist setup, and just the smallest amount of liquid is sufficient, barely enough to make a paper towel damp. There is a reason they call it MQL (minimum quantity lubrication). This isn't flood cooling after all! I find a 1 gal container lasts for months, albeit with light use. You may be using a coolant that isn't designed for MQL though, I'm not sure about that part.
@owensparks5013
@owensparks5013 6 жыл бұрын
I agree. I've had to check my mist coolant is actually on before as is so hard to see. I'll usually hold my finger a inch away from the end of the nozzle and see if it comes away wet after a few seconds... This isn't flood coolant!!
